soooo...

I have a confession. It's nothing huge, but still. Here goes.

I think most book trailers are stupid. So much so that I usually do not bother to look at them unless someone specifically asks me to or mentions how AWESOME one is. And then, sadly, I must mentally mark them down as being a little less awesome than I thought they were before they made such a bogus recommendation. I think it's because most of them, even the official ones, look like they're fan made (and I gather some of the 'official' ones look that way because they are) and also?

Books =/= movies. Or television shows or quite a few other things trailers are useful for. So generally speaking the book trailer involves you basically reading the back of the book set to music and some pictures someone thought looked cool OR it's from the cover of the book. Which is great, but you know what? Odds are good I've read the back of your book, or will when I find it. The trailer isn't really doing anything for me other than making me think, "God. So lame." I'm thinking this is not how you want me viewing your book, yes?

So either I'm too old for this phenomenon, or just not awesome enough to truly appreciate this sort of thing.

I will say that I give writers a free pass on gushing over their own trailers, unless they made it themselves. It goes along with the joy that should be inherent in a new book being thrown to the world.

Book trailers. I just... don't... get it. Feel free to change my mind with ones you love. Or join me in old fart land and help me yell at those damn kids to get off my damn lawn. I'll even let you wave the cane around if you'd like.
