Oh, Hasbro... did you win this round?
I made a tactical error yesterday. I've been trying to prolong my holiday since I had to work through Christmas Eve and Christmas* but wasn't sleepy enough to head up to bed to work on The Evil Twin (my copy is now falling apart! :( ) so I thought, "I'll watch a movie." I watched the last episode of The Middle available online that I haven't seen but needed something to counteract unexpected sad (and happy) so I peeked at Netflix. Which had the new Equestria Girls movie, Rainbow Rocks, up.
Huh. I watched the first movie and it was okay. RR had the added bonus of not being all that long and I'd heard good things, so I decided what the heck and started.
So many earworms, man. And Sunset Shimmer love! So, naturally I had to go looking for the dolls because I have a couple of the EG (Fluttershy and GothyPie) and I realized a couple of things.
1) They make the villains for their first doll appearance look amazingly creepy. Not a good thing, btw. First wave Sunset Shimmer and Adagio Dazzle are both the stuff of nightmares for me.
2) There are about a million EQ dolls now and 90% if them are variations of Rainbow Rocks. Which, in doll form, seems to channel a lot of KISS. And I hate KISS sooo... this would explain why I'd checked out of the doll line earlier. That and the loss of what little articulation they had.
Still, Amazon had some decent prices so I snagged an older Rarity (the one I wanted to buy earlier this year but didn't because the only one they had in stock locally was topless.), the Sunset Shimmer between horrifying to look at and horrifying price-wise (so the non articulated one), and DJ PON-3.
Unfortunately, this means I've fallen into the EG pit and research is needed. So I went looking to see what was out there and I've got a small want list.
I'm gonna need Luna and Celestia in some form.
I want Sonata and Aria but this is less "ooh, cute dolls!" and more "I like your characters but your doll design is seriously flawed".
Applejack has some of the worst luck so I'm thinking maybe the super basic normal version of their EQ normal outfits even if it does cheap out on the plastic top...? (I also like that Rarity and Fluttershy, I think.)
Need the Cutie Mark Crusaders from Target.
When I saw the movie I really wanted the pigtailed backup singer from Photo Finish and The Snapshots (Pixel Pizzaz) but she doesn't seem to have translated well to doll form. :(
And and and Trixie, Lyra, Zecora,BonBon Sweetie Drops...
Dammit, Hasbro, can't you just make new brushable ponies? They're a lot easier on me, space wise.
I still find Rainbow Dash to wind up on the terrifying end of the spectrum and Twilight looks cute sometimes in some of the stock photos but then you see her in another and it's horrifying sooooooo... yeah, I dunno. And she's not that cute at work. (We didn't get anyone other than Twilight until right before Christmas.)
And I don't understand this Ponymania thing either.
( *Work rant. )
