Halloween, why are you gone so soon

Happy Halloween a few hours late! It's still before sunup so I'm counting it because if I happened to be at work, it'd still be Tuesday to me.
Anyway, this year's Halloween proper wasn't awful. It wasn't spellbindingly amazing but it was nice. I tried to figure out the best time for sleep so I didn't crash in the late afternoon and then miss everything. This didn't work out exactly right because the dog sang for an hour right in the middle of my snoozing and if you happen to wake for any of her song, you ain't getting back to sleep. Which means that by 8:30 I was yawning like an old lady and by 10 I was passed out in bed with the cat snoozing on me in that way that says "yesssssss, you are mine and now I shall proceed to knead you into submission. Pay no attention to the pain, it's part of my process."

But I got my pumpkin carved and this means my favorite scent in the world was available. Mmm. The smell of Halloween is a lit jack o lantern and a bowl of chocolate candy. The candy is negotiable but the pumpkin is not. This year I couldn't find our usual apple or cinnamon candle so I went with a candy corn one and it worked pretty well. The carving itself is one of my least favorite things in general but the gutting, which is normally my least favorite part, was actually pretty easy. Which meant that when it came time to carve my dragon, I got cocky and well... I knew it was a dragon but Mums, even when I left the stencil out, was all, "It's a lovely bat, right?" It looked better lit though.

Annnnnnnnd hours later I return to this. In my defense, the dog needed walking and stuffs. Where was I? Oh, yeah. So Cass stopped by after work and we discussed the dumpster fire that is a sort of mutual friend's life and how much of said fire is likely due to her hooking up with 'former' meth-heads.
Widget went out with his mom because of course he did. I couldn't very well say no, you must stay home with meeeeeeee as we await the trick or treaters who aren't going to show. This year I didn't even hear them when I went out after dinner to get the mail. I wandered around the townhouses and yeah, not a single kid to be found. I imagine that most were in the richer section of the neighborhood but it's still very strange to compare Halloween now to how it was when I was a kid.
Tangent time - I grew up in a fairly rich neighborhood and you earned very last calorie of those candy bars because the houses in the very back of the neighborhood had a million steps and you had to walk up and down huge lawns and basically it was a workout. So if you'd offered me the chance to cut waaaaaaay down on the walking and hit the townhouses like here? Uh, yes. But I get the feeling from the way a lot of people, everywhere, are talking that ToTing has basically fallen prey to the trunk or treating and who knows what else. Which is strange because it's not like the people handing out candy from their cars aren't strangers, too. Hell, I'd probably trust the weirdos in the neighborhood more than someone who just appears from wherever. Also, see above about the walking and the walking to get said candy.
The alternatives to trick or treating make sense to me in the more country parts of the state, or even certain neighborhoods where maybe going outside as it's getting dark is just a bad idea, either from a traffic or *ahem* gun situation (looking at you, North Charleston!) but otherwise... why?

Let's see. So I spent most of my Halloween evening at home with my festive decorations and lights, and honestly, I enjoyed myself. I really do need to figure out where to put the green lights next year because I think it'd work well. Maybe do a strand of green in with the purple above the door? *muse* Also, need to get wall stickies or something to replace the ones that will not be saved at the end of this season.

Watched The Weekender's Halloween special and Recess: Taking the 5th, the Halloween part before falling asleep. Both deal with losing your Halloween spirit/changing how you deal with Halloween after trick or treating might not be for you but handle it in different ways. They both make me fairly happy and don't require too much attention... which is good because I was falling asleep. :p

Took pictures of the various set-ups but if you're looking for the annual AG army, that did not happen. I ran out of time and energy and decided I could either frazzle my nerves and not finish or I could just allocate my energy elsewhere. I still plan on reviewing the two costumes I bought, and I'll do the same for the two things I bought from AG if they ever arrive. Anyway, the pics went up on FB but I probably won't have time to share here until the weekend.
