D5 Favourite mystery:
Mary Anne and the Secret In the Attic. I know, it's such an easy answer, right, but was a mystery that broke the laws of the special editions. Until then, the general feeling towads SE in almost any given series I read was that they seemed to exist outside of the regular timeline. Generally speaking they'd try and line things up as best they could, but whatever happened in Vegas stayed in Vegas. Mystery #5 didn't play that game. Not only did it impact the entire rest of the series, it did so with the character you'd least expect. I still remember reading it and thinking no. way! Also, crying.
Random runner up: Stacey And the Missing Ring for reasons that have nothing to do with the book itself aside from the cover. I was still getting the BSC books by mail (oh, book clubs, why don't you exist anymore?) and I wasn't expecting a package so early. It was summer sometime (the pub. date is August '91, so probably June or July) and the mailman came while I was across the street. I got the mail, saw the big envelope thing they shipped them in, opened it (excited, but not terribly so. Summer and there was a cat to adore!) and damn near dropped the whole thing.
Mystery.
MYSTERY. Needless to say the cat and I spent the afternoon figuring out who the real culprit was. I probably also burned to a crisp reading it outside, but still. So anytime I see the cover, it's summer and I'm ten again for just a second. It's kind of magical.

I think I held out a couple of extra books longer than you. I remember borrowing Dawn and the Surfer Ghost from a friend after looking for it for ages. I didn't feel so bad about not giving it back after the slumber party where someone's glasses broke and I got hit so hard in the head with a feather pillow that my head hurt for two days afterward.
Also, Stacey looks really pretty on the cover! I get so distracted by Kristy that it takes me a minute to look over and give Stace the thumbs up in a totally non creepy way. (Why, oh why, did Stacey get so much fug after awhile? She's supposed to be the pretty blonde!)

Okay, okay, okay, so I had to pull the book out and
read itlook at the cover again. It's a pretty good picture of Kristy, too - well, it would be if she wasn't sitting at a nigh-on impossible angle :P But her face is nice - that model was definitely the best Kristy. Why, oh why, did Stacey get so much fug after awhile? I don't know! She wasn't very pretty on the original book covers, either. She had a good run in the early/mid canon, but then there's #58 and o.O Wow. I'll never forgive them for picking that picture of her for the side panels when they restyled the covers!

Sorry. For a second there my brain imploded at the thought of the BSC and the Wakefields getting into a murder solving contest. Pretty sure it ended with both Liz and Kristy seriously considering killing another person so they could solve that one extra murder. Thinking Kristy would be quicker on the "kill the other team" draw but still...
Ha! I'm not the only one who went to go look at the cover again. Muhaha, my plan, she is complete. (It wasn't much of a plan mind you, but still.)
Hrmm. Upon careful review of the bookcovers gracing Goodreads (ignoring the UK covers because it's a wonder children don't have those on their nightmare fuel lists at times) I've concluded that early Stacey was very hit or miss for me. Sometimes I think she's pretty or at least cute and sometimes... well.
I hope the person who made the decision to use #58 for our representation of Stacey got fired. Or fined. Or something. And the people who didn't stop it? Also with the string of bad luck. It was just... no. No, I say. It's so bad I can't even burn it from memory no matter how long I've been trying.
