more new AG. Mix n Match/Courtney
I believe I mentioned that Courtney's Mix and Match stuff was going the way of the dodo, right? If not, I assume that's because DW ate a post. Anyway, no one was sure if this meant she was getting new stuff or they'd just do away with the MnM stuff. Turns out we're getting a new round. And there are some choices being made...

You might remember this picture going around back in the spring, maybe? I know I am personally haunted by the dolls in the background but most people figured we were getting another ~french~ look or maybe Melody was getting some houndstooth couture. Nah, mallrat Courtney's getting some mix and match stuff to maximize profits.
Guess we'll start with the accessory set:

I was just about to say I don't really give a shit about AG hats unless they're historical but then I remembered that Courtney IS historical (is this how Julie's generation feels talking about her stuff?) so let me just say I don't give a rat's furry butt about this hat either. If I buy this set, it will ONLY be for the shoes. I don't really remember belts like that being a thing but since I am younger than Courtney and by younger I mean this time in my life would be under ten and thus my memories aren't as fashion focused, I'm just going to say I do remember DOLLS wearing the shit out of this kind of belt and leave it be. Shoes yes, everything else is just meh for me.

Ah, the scribble graphic print. I'm not entirely sure this isn't just a riff off that one Skipper shirt making playset from the 80's/90's, honestly. But I don't hate it and it feels like it'll play nice with both the old MnM and the new so here we are. (forever pissed the jeans did not make a comeback. WTF, Mattel.)

Despite never owning a pair of shorts in this design, it is seared onto my brain. HOW. WHY. But also GIMME.

Ah, polka dots. Specifically black on mock turtleneck. I am reminded of the one and only semi ~stylish~ and I use this term ever so loosely, outfits I managed to scam my mother out of as a kid. Tunic, as the 80's did love their oversized things, that was purple with black polka dots and a layer or two (three?) of ruffles. You could also belt another one on because fashion! and a little black skirt underneath. It was probably hideous in actuality but in my head it was faaaaaaaaaabulous. So while the pink bits here miss the ruffles, in my heart it's close enough. Not sold as a stand-alone piece as it's clearly a money grab, but I have plans.

The blue top is definitely giving me Skipper and Saved by the Bell flashbacks. The other is Mattel saying, "you want that dress? You gotta build it yourself." In either case, I plan on picking this set up, too.

Other part of make it yourself and the plan comes together. Muhaha? Mini skirts always make me think of Jessica Wakefield.

Why. WHY. Not even Claudia can save this. To be fair, I think this is something that would/does work on people but on AG dolls it's likely to be a big ol' swing and a miss for me. I could be wrong... I just don't think I will be this time.

YELLOW. Yes. The 80's would be nothing without yellow. Nothing! Well, maybe not nothing. But still, yellow and black is always lovely. Don't remind me that just about everything else in this release is pink or blue and we're really going to smash that color combo home. Let me love this.

If you listened carefully enough yesterday, you would've heard every AG person of a certain age shriek about Sloane's jacket. If you listen carefully now, you can still hear them.

Now. With as much as I think I could like these pieces, I think in general they don't do as much for me as they could. I don't really like them on Courtney. Like at all. I also could live my life quite happily not seeing those yellow leggings/tights as paired in this picture combo. My eyes have suffered so much. I think this is the more doll friendly version of the 80's fashions whereas her first round of MnM was more... reality based? Barring the Zach Morris shirt, I suppose.
Winter Mix and Match:

Boots. I swear, once upon a time they did other boots. Maybe. You see one pair of white furry boots, you see them all.

This shirt's neckline makes me hate it. I wouldn't mind it without whatever is going on there.

These shoes hurt to look at. If the glitter is scratchy, I won't be buying. If it's covered in a layer of plastic, I might simply because I do love shiny things.

Which is why I want these. Shiny.

These are cute but I don't think I've caved on any of these muff/mitten sets that aren't historical, and I know I wanted a few.

Preeeeeeeeetty sure they did this dress in another fabric before. I didn't love it then, I don't think, and I don't love it now. If you told me there's a coat coming out that goes over this, I'd believe it.
Now. Let me present you with a trio of photos.

Mm.

Kay.

This should've just made this a friggin' outfit and not gone MnM with it. I was meh on the pieces until I saw it put together like this and then I got it.

I... have questions. So many questions. *muse*
Overall, it's not the worst MnM they've done. But there's nothing I'm head over heels in love with, though I do think I like the outfit Luci's got on, minus the mittens.

I mean, just because the 80s were 40 years ago(!!!)I am old. That button belt was definitely A Thing in the 80s (see: Season 5 of Kids Incorporated) but I don't remember the tail hanging down (that seems more of a 90s trend). There is a distinct lack of purple and green in these fashions - remember when pink and green was THE hot color combination? Apparently AG stylists don't. Definitely disappointing, though there are some standout pieces (like the squiggles shirt(s) - I definitely remember those).

The 80's were like, 20 years ago and I don't care that this isn't strictly, factually true. It feels true and I blame the fact that we never had a chance to miss the 80's music and also not wanting to be olllllllllddddddddd.
I kinda want AG to keep cycling through various color combos and the next round bring us the acid green we deserve to pair with all this pink. Hell, give me acid green and bright eye-searing purple next go round and I'll buy it allllllllllll. As it is, I fear they consider their Zach shirt to be enough of the pink/green combo.

I think once you see the button belt, you can't really unsee it, but I also think AG made a mistake with the tail being noticeable. The whole point was that it's a wide belt held together with a button instead of a buckle! Giving it a tail breaks the illusion.
I think the AG stylists missing the obvious pink/green combo is just another sign that they don't truly understand the 80s aesthetic. (And OMG DAY-GLO! Remember those shirts that turned a different color when they got wet? Ahhhhhh!)
