Kirsten's back!
Sooooooo... today was meant to be Kirsten's big return and instead you open AG's site and see this:

I was unaware AG's grooviest girl went anywhere. Love it; the forgotten four (three? Kaya's still hanging out slightly more than the other three) get overshadowed once more by someone else. Classic AG. I guess now people can't say blondes get special treatment, as Kirsten's release just got eclipsed by Julie's new stuff, so equal opportunity and all that.

Julie's Summer Skating Outfit // $36
Item#HXK57
Julie roller skates up and down the hills of her neighborhood to gather signatures for her petition to play on the boys’ basketball team.
Includes:
A blue T-shirt with a rainbow heart graphic and a pair of blue satin shorts with pink contrast trim
A pair of striped knee socks and a ponytail holder with a pink ribbon bow
A pair of pink-and-blue athletic shoes mounted on skates with blue wheels and blue front stoppers
I swear when AG previewed these a couple of days ago the shirt was white. o_O I think this is the first time I kind of prefer the white over the blue? I like the blue, don't get me wrong, but it's so much blue with the skates, the socks, and the shorts. Upon closer inspection, I guess the video was just washed out as I can tell the shirt is blue if I know I'm looking for a blue shirt, if that makes sense? ANYWAY. Love this. Gonna love it more when someone else points out that this is her Pride/trans flag outfit and someone else's head explodes. Not sure why the "ribbon" bow is on a ponytail holder because those things tended to be super long and fairly easy to use so long as your hands didn't scream touching them like mine did. Seriously, how did no one catch on to my sensory issues as a kid?
ANYWAY (the second)! I don't think I'll be giving this one to Ivy, like I do most of Julie's stuff, but it's still very much on my need not want list. I think I do agree with people who've been saying this outfit leans very 80's, as I'd bet a fair chunk of change that I had a very similar shirt, I know I had shorts like that, and we just discussed the hair ribbon.

Julie's School Outfit // $36
Item#HXK55
Julie likes to be involved in school, including playing on the basketball team and running for student body president.
Includes:
A purple jersey-knit turtleneck, a multi-colored crochet-square vest with white lace trim, a navy A-line skirt, and a pair of purple tights
A pair of purple platform shoes
Two purple bow-shaped barrettes
Not as in love with this one, despite my well documented love of purple. I don't love turtlenecks or this shade of purple (I do love the shades on the tights and barrettes) and the vest is not my favorite thing in the world. I am not a wear crochet kind of person. But I get that it's very 70's to do so, so you do you, Julie. Will I still buy this? Yes. It's got a lot of mix and match potential aside from the vest and yes, I can hear you plotting, Claudia Kishi!

Julie's Record Player and Accessories $42
Item#HXK54
Julie loves listening to groovy tunes in her room on her record player.
Includes:
A yellow record player with a handle, removable lid, and built-in speaker. When a record is placed on the turntable, it plays a 1970s-inspired song
Three doll-sized records and record sleeves with 1970s-inspired artwork that each play a different song when placed on the record player
A snap-close record storage case with graphic-print artwork and a handle dolls can hold
It took me entirely too long to find the original version on the wiki, but this set is an updated version of Julie's Sound Accessories. I prefer the blue storage case (and record player, really) and honestly, comparing the two, it's almost insulting how much better the Sound Accessories set is. You get three records that 'play' three real song (snippets), the same stuff included in the current set in different (better) colors, AND a cassette player. All for less than the new set is asking for. I will say I'll cut this one a little slack if it plays a full length song for each record, but still.

Julie's Accessories // $32
Item#HXK53
Julie brings good vibes to every outfit with her favorite accessories.
Includes:
A braided headband with a groovy pink flower
A faux-leather bag with embroidered flower detail
A shiny golden metal “Julie” necklace
A golden mood ring with turquoise center that changes color from blue to red when placed in warm or cool water, and a mood-board color card
They also updated her Meet Accessories, again. previous versions here. I wish they'd kept the clipboard, as that's a pretty big part of Julie's story. You can't convince me it cost that much to make and it helps make the set not feel as empty as the current set does when you compare the two. I like that the mood ring is color change and once more I have no feelings one way or the other for her headband or purse. Oh. Her purse is a release from her Floral Accessories, which I thought I had but apparently do not.
I'm lazy, so we'll just link you to the re-releases that didn't seem to change a lot. There's Julie's Floral Jumpsuit, which might be a bit brighter and the belt looks a little different, plus now you get shoes with it. It was never my favorite outfit, but I've had years to miss it on some level and one can never have too many shoes, really. Julie's School Lunch also got a re-release, and for the most part it seems pretty close to the last version, just losing the shading that made the sandwich look like it shoul dbe two pieces... but the divide is still there.
She's also got a new Journal/book where you too can wonder how historically accurate it would be for Julie to say "Ivy was like".

So. Kirsten did make her triumphant return, but in the way you'd expect one of AG's forgotten four to do instead of the big bang that Molly and Kit got. To be fair, I don't think Molly or Kit set their returns ablaze but still. Anniversary edition aside, Kirsten's been MIA since 2009 so... show our immigrant queen some respect, AG.
Once more, they absolutely refuse to do so. This is the best we're getting:

So, Kirsten, Josefina, and Addy get a small re-release.

Kirsten Larson Doll, Book, and Accessories // $150
Item#HVY65
Hardworking Kirsten Larson™ helps her Swedish immigrant family on their Minnesota farmstead. Kirsten was one of the first six dolls introduced by Pleasant Company, now American Girl.
Premium features:
An 18" Kirsten™ doll that’s almost exactly like the one fans fell in love with in 1986! She has light-blue eyes and straight blonde hair with bangs that comes styled in two looped-up braids tied with blue hair ribbons. She has a soft cotton body, and her movable head and limbs are made of smooth vinyl.
A Meet Kirsten paperback book with the original cover design
Also includes:
A blue calico dress with tiny red flowers, full sleeves, and a “grow stripe” at the bottom hem that could be let out as Kirsten grew taller
A red-and-white-checked bonnet that ties under her chin, a red striped apron with a pocket that ties in back, and a faux-amber heart-shaped necklace
A pair of white pantalettes with lace trim at the bottom and an elastic waist, a white embroidered hankie, a pair of striped knit socks, and a pair of brown faux leather boots
An embroidered fabric spoon bag with a strap so Kirsten can tie it around her waist and a wooden spoon for her to take to celebrations and eat with
I didn't have any big expectations for Kirsten's return and I was honestly surprised when it was confirmed a little while ago as I figured AG didn't want much to do with her as they let her linger out of sight for so long. And yet when they trotted Molly and Kit out, I was kind of hoping Kirsten would get a similar release. Yeah, no. Kirsten was my second AG doll and she'll always have a soft spot in my heart because she was the first AG doll I ever held or saw, as well as loving her as a character. After Samageddon, I took Kirsten's axing seriously and grabbed pretty much everything I could for her. This means this re-release does nothing for me personally, but I'm glad she's back in any form... I just wish for more, you know?

Kirsten's Birthday Outfit // $55
Item#HXK59
Kirsten’s hard work caring for her new baby sister is rewarded when her birthday—Kirsten’s first in Minnesota—becomes a celebration of family and friendship.
Includes:
A summery day dress checked in apple-blossom pink, with short puffed sleeves, white ribbon bows on the sides, and covered with a crisp white apron—a gift from Mama
A pair of tan ribbed socks and a pair of cream lace-up boots with brown faux-leather at the toes
A daisy-trimmed wreath with a pink ribbon tied in a bow at the back that Kirsten wears as a birthday crown
A Happy Birthday, Kirsten! paperback book with the original cover design
It would drive me absolutely bonkers to have two of Kirsten's six books and not have the rest released at the same time... and yet that kinda looks like that's what AG did? Kid me would not have been having it. Things need to match, dammit. Anyway. I had exactly ONE Kirsten outfit for my childhood (aside from her Meet) and of course it was this one. Because of course that's how the release would go. :P I am kinda tempted to get this at some point because shoes, socks, and my dress's sleeve bow came untied and I never could get it back properly, plus I wonder how different the two dresses are.

Josefina Montoya Doll, Book, and Accessories // $150
Item#HVY63
Gentle Josefina Montoya™ lives on a rancho in New Mexico during a time of great change. Josefina was one of the first six dolls introduced by Pleasant Company, now American Girl.
Premium features:
An 18" Josefina™ doll that’s almost exactly like the one fans fell in love with in 1997! She has gold hoop earrings and brown eyes, and her mahogany-colored hair comes in a side braid style. She has a soft cotton body, and her movable head and limbs are made of smooth vinyl.
A Meet Josefina paperback book with the original cover design
Also includes:
A white camisa with short puffed sleeves edged with lace, a vibrant red skirt the color of sundried chiles and peppered with little black blossoms, a woven brown sash that ties in the back, and a metal pendant necklace with a faux-garnet gemstone
A pair of white knee-length cotton drawers to wear under her skirt, a white hankie with an embroidered flower, and a pair of faux-leather lace-up moccasins
A blue hair ribbon to tie around the end of her braid and a sprig of three pretend yellow primroses she wears in her hair
A rebozo, a woven shawl she can wear to cover herself from the sun or when it gets cold
A faux metal jola coin in a paper envelope
There's just something that soothes my soul in seeing Josefina in her traditional Meet dress. You can still get her BeForever version (for now?) but since her BF outfit was basically identical except the colors are more saturated, it's not a huge difference. Anyway, I'm kind of at a loss as to why AG did this. This feels kinda like you're trying to piss off the people who bought the Anniversary dolls? Eh.

Josefina's Birthday Outfit and Book // $55
Item#HXK61
Josefina celebrated the feast day of San José, the saint for whom she was named, instead of her birthday.
Includes:
A crisp white camisa edged with rows of ruffles, a white-and-turquoise skirt with a swirl of applique at the hem, and a wide orange sash
A pair of turquoise satin slippers—a surprise gift from her older sister Clara
A pair of red hair ribbons
A Happy Birthday, Josefina! paperback book with the original cover design
This outfit was $32 when it retired and you cannot convince me that a fucking paperback is worth $13, nor can you convince me that it costs that much more today to make this than it did then, considering how active the grey market is on shit like this. WTF, AG. Luckily for me, I also already own this. I had forgotten how cute book!Josefina is somehow. Adorable!

Addy Walker Doll, Book, and Accessories // $150
Item#HVY62
Courageous Addy Walker™ is determined to be free in the midst of the Civil War. Addy was one of the first six dolls introduced by Pleasant Company, now American Girl.
Premium features:
An 18" Addy™ doll that’s almost exactly like the one fans fell in love with in 1993! She has gold hoop earrings and brown eyes and comes with her hair in a braid tied with a blue ribbon. She has a soft cotton body, and her movable head and limbs are made of smooth vinyl.
A Meet Addy paperback book with the original cover design
Also includes:
A pink dress with wavy white stripes and buttons down the front, a straw bonnet with a calico-print blue ribbon, and a faux cowrie-shell necklace that Addy’s great-grandmother brought all the way from Africa
A pair of white cotton drawers trimmed with lace to wear under her dress, a pair of knee-high black stockings, and a pair of black lace-up boots
An envelope with a reproduction of a half-dime Addy received from Uncle Solomon—the only money she and Momma had
A pretend water gourd
A printed kerchief Addy uses to hold her belongings
Welcome back, pink!Addy. Still going to be the outlier who loves the BF outfit more, but hey, if you want options, I'm all for that.

Addy's Birthday Outfit and Book // $55
Item#HXK60
The day Addy chose as her birthday, April 9, was an important one—marking the end of the Civil War—and she wore a special outfit to celebrate!
Includes:
A chocolate-and-cream-checked pinafore and an ecru blouse with double-puffed sleeves, brown rickrack trim, and three tiny buttons
A pair of cream knee-high stockings, a pair of navy-blue lace-up boots, and a brown snood with cream-ribbon trim for her hair
A Happy Birthday, Addy! paperback book with the original with the original cover design
Take my rant about Josefina's price hike and apply it here, though at least Addy gets shoes unlike her previous version. That said, I hate these boots with this outfit. Her simple black books are what's pictured on the book cover and they help ground the outfit while these don't match but are obviously trying pretend to do so. Grumbles aside, I'm glad Addy and Josefina finally each have another outfit, though I really do wonder how bundling these with books and the price hike is going to affect their sales.
If you're interested in the branding type stuff, there's always this look behind the scenes.

LMAO! You can only laugh at AG's obtuseness. I know if I was looking for Kirsten and was instead bombarded with one of the 20th century blondes, I'd be at least a little bit peeved.
That skating outfit is very 1980s. I think only the tall socks send it a decade back? And I agree - *way* too much blue.
The original covers of the books are just so superior. Giving me serious nostalgia vibes for the OG Pleasant Company hardbacks I used to snag from the library!!

There are layers upon layers to AG's failures.
It feels weird to say there's too much blue in an AG outfit since it's normally too much pink or, like Julie's other outfit, too much purple. It feels wrong! But I do love the socks and everything, just... maybe a white shirt, AG.
The library hardback nostalgia hits hard and I am here for it. I wonder if that's what we'll be getting when the AG costumes (for adults and kids) are revealed sometime soon. link for vague announcement from Rubies in case you wanted it. At least I'm guessing it'll be soon since Halloween stuff usually gets announced/shown this time of year for stuff like this.

Also, yes, I am just desperate for more historical books.
And I picked that icon because Lala was like whatever. Heh.
