Summary: Bruce Patman lacks impulse control.
-----
Cara Walker could not believe her eyes. There, right in front of the Wakefield's split-level ranch house, was her best friend's boyfriend kissing her other best friend's twin sister.
"Oh. My. Lord," she whispered, horrified at the sight. This would kill Lila. And Jessica, too. The whole school knew how gaga Jessica Wakefield was over Bruce Patman.
So why, exactly, was he shoving his tongue down Elizabeth Wakefield's throat?
-----
Fifteen minutes earlier.
"I'm going to get some fresh air," Bruce announced.
Lila Fowler arched one perfectly plucked brow. "Bruce, this is a pool party. We're already outside in the fresh air," she said dryly.
A look of pure irritation flashed across his handsome face. "Yes, but half the school is crammed in this tiny little postage stamp they call a yard, and if I don't get some actual space, I'm going to start shoving everyone I see into the pool."
Lila flinched. For the past two weeks, Bruce had been acting... well, like the jackass she'd originally thought he was, not at all like the boyfriend he'd morphed into over the summer. She'd racked her brain trying to pinpoint what had prompted the change, but she came up blank every time.
"Hold this," he ordered, shoving his plastic cup into her hands before disappearing into the crowd.
"Ugh. Who does he think he is anyway?" she grumbled before catching a whiff of the cup's contents. "Oh, come on." Yet again, Bruce had clearly spiked his drink which meant he was going to be even more obnoxious than usual if his mood didn't change and fast. Bruce could be a real jerk sober, but once he started drinking, he morphed into a royal pain in the ass.
Lila quickly tossed the cup in the nearest garbage can and looked around for someone to distract her. Maybe giving Bruce space wasn't such a bad idea after all.
----
"Liz! What are you doing here?" Bruce asked when he nearly tripped over the pretty blond.
Elizabeth shot him a not entirely friendly look. "Uh, this is my house?"
Bruce tried to suppress the smirk he knew was slowly inching across his face. The more studious twin had never been his biggest fan but she'd never come quite so close to being rude before. This could be fun.
"Obviously, but I thought you would be mingling with your guests or taking a dip in the pool," he added as he allowed his gaze to drop, ever briefly, to her bikini top. "This is a pool party, is it not?"
Elizabeth crossed her arms and frowned at him. "It is, but I needed a minute. Alone," she added pointedly.
"Hey, say no more. I came out here for the same reason," he told her, hands held up in surrender. He turned his gaze towards the street. "Pretend I'm not even here."
Bruce could almost hear Elizabeth's frown deepen as she contemplated whether to turn tail and run, attempt to chase him off, or just agree to ignore one another. He watched as a station wagon slowly drove by, probably wondering why the street was so filled with cars. Then again, considering how popular Jessica was, maybe not. He counted to ten, wondering which way Liz would lean.
After a few minutes, he heard her sigh. "Is that for me, Blondie, or because a certain basketball player hasn't taken his eyes off whatshername?"
Another sigh. "Both? Am I that obvious?" she asked sadly.
"Not really. I just happen to have keen observational skills," he said in his snootiest voice, earning him a laugh in return.
"Keen observational skills?"
Bruce smirked. "What, you doubt me?"
"No, never," she replied before dissolving into laughter once more.
"Wilkins is a fool if he'd choose whatshername over you, Blondie. You're smart and funny, and clearly appreciate keen observational skills, which he obviously lacks." Bruce watched as Elizabeth's cheeks turned bright pink and before he added, "Also, you're absolutely breathtakingly beautiful."
And then, before either really knew what was happening, Bruce leaned in and gently kissed her. When she didn't push him away, he took the opportunity to pull her closer and-
"Ow! What the hell did you do that for?" he roared, holding a hand to the cheek she'd just slapped.
"What the hell is wrong with you, Bruce Patman? You have a girlfriend!"
"So? She's not my wife."
Elizabeth rolled her eyes in disgust. "Typical. Just when I thought you might be human, you remind me just what a pig you are. Don't you ever touch me again, do you hear me?"
"Fine, yeah, I hear you."
"Pig," she muttered as she stalked away.
----
Lila slowly pulled her hand away from the Wakefield's doorknob. She couldn't believe what she'd just heard.
Her boyfriend, her soon-to-be ex-boyfriend, had kissed the school's biggest goody-two-shoes and then acted like it was nothing.
Which meant he thought they were nothing.
That she was nothing.
----
Note: Lila and Bruce have a pretty rocky relationship at the start of SVH and I figure that their breakup had to be a pretty sore spot for Lila considering the way she reacts when Jessica finally snags Bruce. The one thing I agree with Francine Pacal on is that Bruce has always been more than a little infatuated with Elizabeth, so I could totally see him going after her, especially if he's hellbent on destroying his relationship with Lila at the same time.
It would also give Lila more reason to not be entirely fond of Liz beyond finding her boring. Before we hit the evil twin arc in SVH, Lila takes great delight in seeing Liz fall on her face and I don't think it's just because who doesn't love to see the golden girl fail, nor do I think it's just sticking up for Jessica (in that Jess gets a weirdly raw deal at home at times). Losing guys to Jessica is one thing, but losing them to Elizabeth? That's something else entirely.
Oh, and this is two of three.
