Stupid blather about nothing

*sigh* Look. I just cannot deal with people who are clinging so terribly hard to the whole "it's a prequel, not a reboot!" theory on MH. It's not really much of an issue in the land of LJ but sweet god, anywhere else is swarming with people shrieking it at every corner.

Guys. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, this reboot. I'm also not saying it's a good thing, but Mattel done fucked up and needs something to save the line and what the hell, this is a thing and it can't be stopped from rolling out at this point and I'm losing my point here.*
But it's not a prequel. A prequel would pretty much have zero Frankie (oh, darn) and ditto to most introduced after her. You could have a founding of Monster High, but that'd be quite awhile ago and while interesting, probably wouldn't help sell the dolls and would not be the founding we are getting.
You could have the freshmen year for the ghouls we already know and love and it's honestly what I'd hoped this 'prequel' would be.

But the moment you have Frankie and modern day Draculaura (and Dracula) building the freakin' school, you lose all rights to the word prequel.

What you've got right there is a reboot, my friend. Or... and this is how I'm gonna keep my sanity... you have an alternate universe. Which is about the same thing, I suppose, but an AU means I can toggle back and forth as I so choose.

* - So far I like certain things about this AU. I like the molded on bandages on Cleo's dolls and Clawdeen's fur. I like the bodies being a little bigger and Draculaura and doll!Frankie looking younger and more approachable. If I'm losing Lagoona's focus being Gil, I'm cool with that, but that's about the only plot comment I'll allow myself for now.

Alas, as more things roll out, I must also add to the dislike pile, but that's a thing for another time.

Elsewhere! SDCC has been oddly quiet in the doll world. Maybe because I'm working (but I'm always working) or maybe I just haven't been poking the bear. I dunno.

DC's trailers look pretty damn awesome and we've established I usually swing more Marvel than DC but if DC's gonna show me things and Marvel's gonna not...

This has been the quietest SDCC since I started following it in 2010.

DC Superhero Girls easily got the best showing. One of the best quality exclusives, an upcoming doll of a character people are excited for, an upcoming action figure of a character people are excited for, a plush, three vinyls, and other assorted things from a jet to a car. However, where are my actual photos? I've seen one photo of the Katana doll and one of the Katana figure. No real photos of Starfire. Just nothing.

MH I've only seen one person's booth photos, I think, and I believe only a handful of new minis were out at the time. I've only seen promo photos for the Electrified dolls.

Nothing for EAH, but I didn't really expect that. The only other exciting thing was the Catra prototype (and Netossa, but less so, because she had no face yet).

But where are all the people who usually take photos? Weird.

Oh, I lied. Some actual real photos!

Gah, ElectroVenus is kinda scary.

You probably saw this already, but here's Starfire. Which is still underwhelming since I shouldn't have to dig that far into the tag to find a new doll. I was wondering if I was just misremembering other years for SDCC, but apparently not.

I swear, in past years there were quite a few people taking pictures and sharing at least a few while there, even if they waited to upload the rest later.

Huh. Venus appears to have crunchy fried hair. Which I'm going to hope is just a prototype thing that'll get fixed. Maybe. The yellow around the eyes isn't my favorite thing. Seen too many eye infections at work to not immediately think of that.

I neeeeeeeed that Catra to be a thing that happens, yes.

Actually, no, I didn't see her, so yay. I want her muchly.

Yeah, Venus's eyes...I don't like it. I'm a sucker for crimped hair, so I want it done well, but... Siggggggggggggggggh. I will buy Twyla however she comes though, because Twyla.

I love crimped hair when it's done well (and intentional. Some braids die and leave a most unfortunate look behind) and I'm hoping that this line is going to pull it off. Maybe it'll be one of those things, eye makeup wise, where they dial it back for the actual product. It wouldn't be the first time.

And yay, I got to be helpful! Starfire *is* really pretty.

I'm glad Twyla's going to show up pretty soon in the reboot. I wonder how they decided who made the immediate cut and who will wait. Mostly I'm wondering how Venus, who they've done next to nothing with, managed to squeak by.
