impy: Claudia and Stacey from The Baby-Sitters Club at the beach (just beachy)

Not sure if I should just add this to the previous BSC post or make another one? Especially since I'm 98% sure I'm going to do a rewatch sometime this week, possibly to screen cap things that catch my interest.

Anyway, things I neglected to mention or maybe just want to blather about more shall be behind the cut.

I tried very hard when I was watching to not nit-pick at things. I have a small list of things on my phone, that I did not look at when I made my initial post, of things that bugged me/delighted me enough to mention them there, so I might as well actually put that to good use?

First up:
I did not like Watson being the one to basically give Kristy the more business oriented bits for the BSC. If it had been Kristy's mom making the suggestion, sure, though it would still take something away from Kristy. But having it be Watson/a dude? Yeah, it rubs me the wrong way. Let Kristy figure out that the club will need to charge dues for things, show.

This got lost in Janine being pricklier than expected, but I don't like that Claudia's art has to have some deeper meaning to it. I get that it's probably not meant to say that ALL art has to have something significant to say but it kinda comes across that way instead of just Janine trying, in her own way, to get Claud to realize the art show people are going to ask. (Freaking just tell Claudia they'll ask, don't just assume she'll figure that out for your questions, Janine. Claud is many things, but quick on the uptake where you, or the rest of her family, is concerned she is not.) I'm not sure this would have bothered me as much say, back in the 90's or something, but I have seen how in just the last ten years, people (parents especially) have become so hyper focused on only doing things that will further your career or your brand or whatever else the fuck is going on that maybe don't continue to normalize that? Maybe sometimes an artist just wants to challenge herself to capture the crinkly bits on a wrapper.

Charlotte. As possibly one of the most important sitting charges (and one of my faves) in the book, Char got the shaft. She's supposed to be really smart and really shy, right? I didn't get either of those from her brief appearance. The kid was cute but nothing in personality said Charlotte.

Richard being a food nerd about the Thanksgiving practice run was adorable.

Aunt Esme declaring MA's runaway moment as very Scorpio is um, a choice. Fine, my comment was, "Scorpio? How dare you! I am a Cancer!" because I absolutely would've bolted like MA did in the share circle.
Which is why I don't buy MA suddenly being brave enough to even rehearse as the star of her production. No. This girl couldn't even say hi to a group of women just a little while ago. She wouldn't be out here on stage. No. NO.

Mrs. Barrett is the absolute worst and I'm not really sure why they did that to her? I don't mind the whole swapping her being model pretty for her being a struggling commercial (I assume) actress. It's a fair enough swap, I guess. But in the books, she actually seemed to give a shit about her kids- she was just overwhelmed by the fact that there were three of them and she'd just gotten divorced and suddenly needed to get a job and was kind of drowning. Show Mrs. B? THE WORST.

Kinda wish the camp story-line hadn't reinforced the fact that Kristy was right? But I also loved the Hunger Games tribute and Dawn standing up, to say nothing of loving Laine and basically the two-parter was a mixed bag for me. I think Meany was right in that Kristy needs to calm down and relax a little. Or a lot, really. I'd have preferred Kristy getting to spend the summer bonding with Karen the way she kind of promised to instead of "and now the Club has taken over camp." But I also love Meany sending people to bug them so... trade off?

I think one of the way the books did things a little bit better was the Thomas kids, with the possible exception of DM, not being all that comfortable with Watson's wealth and what it meant to be his step-kids. Tv!Charlie's out here not with the Junk Bucket (wtf) and gets away with it even though Liz is very clearly NOT ON BOARD with it. This feels like a conversation that Watson and Liz should've had about the time they agreed to marry one another, and to definitely revisit it when it became clear that he's kinda trying to buy their affection or at least not realizing that Liz brought her kids up a completely different way with regards to money. Y'know, because Watson is olde money and Liz is not. But money and how to deal with it? Can be a real dealbreaker for a marriage and I don't want to think about that on the first day of their marriage, dammit.
