Sometimes I wonder if my reading levels will ever get beyond the wonderful world of YA angst. I'm kind of doubting it. This isn't to say I don't read stuff found in the grown up fiction section. It's just that they tend to be so... not pretty.
I'll admit it. The YA section is infinitely more inviting because the covers tend to be shiny and pretty and when they fail horribly, they do so in such a way that you can point, laugh, and die from lack of oxygen. It does make me sad that in YA land, you have one wall of bookshelves, or half a wall in the other library I frequent, plus the spinning racks. That's it. Things get too full, you hope people start "borrowing" the books and paying the fines for lost books, or you get rid of them some other way. I understand there's only so much space and there are so many books in the world, but still. It makes me sad that for all the good stuff out there in YA land, you only have so much shelf space and a lot of it is taken up with ninety billion copies of, I dunno, Harry Potter. :P
Of course, that very limited space also means it's much easier to find whether they've got what you want or not. Otherwise, in regular fiction, you'll be there for the next five thousand years, because your eyes have begun to bleed after the fourth consecutive shelf of really boring spines.

That said, bookstores are still holy. Usually we're talking more along the lines of used bookstores, or smaller ones, as the chains are filled with the evil. I prefer the wandering around space of B&N but the checkout of BAM. I miss running to B. Dalton's to pick up my newest piece of fictional crap [usually SV or the BSC when I was younger] and I still dream of the Book Bag and it's wall of magazines, racks of comics, and the oddest assortment of books ever. As a kid I considered both our closest library and the scary one downtown to be holy, but as I've gotten older, and the closer one remodeled and years of being forced to go to the really annoying one, I've had to rethink that whole library=holy thing. You can only get yelled at so many times before you associate that place with bad, bad memories.

Random thoughts while I search for something to bump my order up to free shipping status over on Amazon. It's the eternal struggle between filling up my small DVD collection or indulging in books. This week I think the books will win. Yay, books! I think I need a new bookcase. Note to self: Share that thought with Mumsy and Dad for late, late, late birthday present idea.

I bit my tongue earlier. It's not happy making.
