Sometimes I worry that I'm a heroine hater. I worry that I read books for the plucky sidekick, the villain who lurks in the shadow and waits for Backstory Book to happen, the long suffering boy/girlfriend who is going to get their heart stomped so that the new shiny boy/girl of the week will win the day.
Sometimes, I'm pretty sure I have reason to worry. It's gotten so that I actually cheer and take note when I like the main character of a story these days. That can't be right, can it? For instance, I finished Fragile Eternity, a book I was really looking forward to. It had some serious problems and not all of them were my fault.
My fault: I don't remember just about anything from Ink Exchange other than I liked it. Sadly, my Goodreads review only tells me that I loved the Dark Kings. No shit, sherlock. Still, I should know better to go in to a new book in a series if I don't remember the old one, right? So I take this one as a hit for the team. I don't like it, but I take it all the same.
Possibly my fault: In general, I've liked just about everyone else in the books more than both Keenan and Ash. I don't think I had a raging hatred of either until this go round, though, so... I'm confused.
( Some of you might read these. I don't know. )
You, Ash, have been removed from my "enh, okay" Heroine List and put on Notice.
It's tiring not liking so many heroines. They whine. They underachieve so that they can be just mediocre enough to appeal to a wider base of fans. They're Usagi when they could be anyone else in the Sailormoon Universe. And they do so without the self-awareness even she occasionally displays.
