Round up!

Thursday was... different. Widget decided Tuesday that he wanted to go to his mother's this weekend. Yeah. Have people make a stand on your behalf and then cave less than a week later, kidlet. Sigh. Anyway, I'm pretty sure he changed his mind due to a combo of brainwashing (seriously, the woman knows exactly what to say to her kid to the point that it is almost frightening) and bribery. Only that kicked up his annoying "how much allowance do you owe me? Where's my money? WHERE'S MY MONEY?" questioning to levels that made me crazy. Kid, if your mother stands there while new!husband threatens to kill you, and I'm fairly certain him breaking your neck in the manner described would do the damn trick, you should at least hold out and make her foot the entire bill for whatever she's bribing you with. Going to a store is not an acceptable bribe. It's just sad. Know your worth and hold out for more. Seriously, chiblet. Hold out for more.

Anyway. He was supposed to be picked up by his mother on her way back through town after she spent the holiday with her grandmother. Widget opted out this year because everyone over a certain age there smokes. Kid, this is going to sound crazy, but in about 15 years, you will miss that. Not the hacking up of your lungs, but... actually, yeah. That, too. All my relatives on Dad's side smoked like chimneys (except for Dad and possibly my Uncle Mike) and certain combinations of smoke remind me of family gatherings. Back to the story.
Mums doesn't trust J to feed her kid on holidays since, like me as a kid, he's not big on traditional turkey day food. With this in mind, she set out to have Thanksgiving dinner early. Only it turned out to be really early. 12:30 in the afternoon early. So my brother, who was clearly still very hung over and just out of bed, tried to choke down dinner before he would normally even eat lunch. I think I was the only one not entirely bothered by the earlyness of it all and it was still odd to me.
Stuffed from the delicious stuffing (and 3/4 a bottle of grape juice, some turkey, a roll, and some green bean casserole) that some marvelous chef cooked up (oh wait, that was me!) I passed out after telling the Widget to wake me up before he left to get some of his money. (Ha! Now you have to say goodbye to me!)
He did but... he didn't end up going to his mother's. When he called to remind her to give us a call before she was here (last minute round up of stuff to send with him and to put the dogs on the porch) she informed him that a) they hadn't gone to her grandmother's for the holiday and b) she had to work this weekend so he couldn't come.
Guys. GUYS. Before you board the logic bus and say, "Well, she did try to get him last weekend" or something similar, realize the ONLY reason Widget would have thought up going to his mother's THIS weekend is because she put the thought in his head. So she schemes and then pulls out at the last minute and doesn't even tell him until he calls that very day.

You are a terrible mother, J. One day, when your kid is old enough to tell you this himself and you ask me, tearfully, if it's true, I'm going to laugh until I cry and then simply say, "Yeah, you suck."

Moving along, the stuffing was delicious. So much so that it's all gone now and Mums is going to make more today for Turkey Day, Part 2. It did try and chop two of my fingers off, though. Curse you, onions!

I think I have found my Advent Calendar for the making this year. The only downside is that it'll require a trip to the craft store as well as Target and possibly Walmart. I'm thinking little ornaments (Walmart's usually got some inexpensive ones) and stuff from the dollar bins at Target. Widget will probably con me into letting him set up one of the fake trees up here (especially if the boy makes good on his promise of a real tree) again and he adores decorating them so... ornaments sound like a good idea.

In gift news, remind me he wants Legos or a fleece lined jacket or hoodie. Self, ask for clarification on that last one.

Also, I'm looking for an interesting star Christmas tree topper for co-worker K. I've got a couple I'm eyeballin' on Etsy, but none of them have flat out said, "PICK ME!" She wants a small to medium (basically not a huge one) star for the top of her tree. She's been looking for years but hasn't found one that speaks to her. She wants one that's unique, hence my looking at Etsy. Unique doesn't have to mean one of a kind just... not whatever the current fad for any recent year has been, I guess? One you wouldn't see on every tree. So if this description sparks something in you, let me know.

I'm off to watch ponies and then call the cable company to pay the bill. Woo. Fun.
