Realization I've had percolating in the back of my head for awhile. ABC Family stepped into the void left behind when The CW ate The WB. It does inter-show promos and has the casts from various shows hang out and I'm waiting ever so impatiently for them to do a proper image campaign.

Also, their shows fall into one of three categories:
1) Crack. Must have more. NOW.
2) I appreciate the thought and effort that went into this but I am currently not in the mood for whatever reason. I may look back on this and kick myself, but for now I'm good.
3) What the everloving hell is this shit?

The turnover is higher for ABC Family but that's because they do the majority of their new programming over the summer in the hopes of catching you when you're not watching what's on the actual CW, and then they lure you back for the winter break.

Anyway, with this in mind I was a bit leery of watching The Fosters. The premise is a bit much on paper: foster child winds up with lesbian couple with hearts of gold and mix of adopted and biological children. Executive producer Jennifer Lopez! Did we mention Jennifer Lopez? I don't think we did, so let's say it another sixty times! Just think of all the drama we can wring from this! Will new girl and oldest boy cross a line or will they deny their feelings? Will evil girlfriend of said boy do something horrible? What of the biological parents of these kids? THE DRAMA. Oh, and the family's last name is Foster. Because we're gonna be that cute!

And yes, they are touching on those plot points but the show is more than that. Honestly, I think this could air on network TV if they shifted the focus off the kids a bit. I'm not saying they should or that it would be better, I'm just saying that it's better than you'd probably think when the words "ABC Family original show" are uttered.

PLL you watch the credits because there's a sinister A scene each week. The Fosters uses the credits to establish that this show is about a family and these moments are some of my favorites, hands down. I love the family dynamics of this show and that is what keeps me coming back for more.

Reasons, in no order, you should give it a whirl:

  • Lena and Stef, the moms, are simply the moms. There's not a huge deal made about it. It does complicate matters in certain areas but it's not treated as an After School Issue of the Week Special Episode thing.

  • The recent QuinceaƱera episode features a racial discussion between a darker skinned AA woman and her biracial daughter about the different experiences they've both faced and it's kind of fabulous and heartbreaking all at the same time.

  • The music featured in episode three alone is fantastic.

  • Currently there are no villains in the main cast. Each character who does something shitty has their reasons, right or wrong.

  • Their kitchen.

  • Some shows feel like a family when you're watching and you kind of want to curl up on a chair and either join in or watch forever. This is one of those shows.
