Toys glorious toys
Feb. 16th, 2016 06:25 amLet's see. Toy Fair has been... interesting. I miss the years when I felt more excitement in general, but at the same time the things I'm excited about, I'm really excited about, so there's that.
Highlights thus far:
Let's see. EAH's showing was blah. MH has left me with so many questions.
1. How much of the 'need' for a reboot is just Mattel not knowing what to do with a doll line after the first year or two? I know they were called out on sales falling during Mattel's conference call (AG was, too, and lately AG has not been the company you want to keep in Mattel's stable) but that was for the fourth quarter and I'm too lazy to look back at past reports. Has the weird distrubution hurt them? Were people really clamoring for the aisles to be clogged with Gloom Beach again, in addition to monsters who hadn't shown up in any form other than doll (Posea, Kala, and Peri & Pearl), or non-articulated budget dolls who, at the time, cost more than the articulated dolls?
2. Why the hell is Catrine making the jump? She's pretty, yes, but they have done NOTHING with her and she shelf sits like crazy, probably because she has no personality to speak of. You could jetison her off and no one could say she was integral to any group. (Sorry, Catrine lovers.) Meanwhile Ghoulia's being shoved aside for her sister who was mentioned so infrequently that most people reacted with, "who?" And let us not speak of the great Ari/Spectra thing.
3. What the hell is up with the weird hands/arms on the Shriek Wrecked dolls? Rochelle is definitely... interesting with everything going on, but between her, Draculaura, and I dunno, everyone, I'm left wondering wtf is with the arms.
4. Why can't Mattel match heads to bodies properly anymore? Poor Dana looks a lot cuter than I initially thought, but she's going to be like Luna where the head/body don't match up even in the finished product, isn't she? Maybe that's more of a yellow body issue, though Dana's gold so... enh.
I had something else but I'm trying to decide whether to stay awake til Mums takes the boy to work and hitch a ride out to Toys R Us or take a nap. It's been raining and I've basically been catnapping. But I don't want to spend the day asleep like I did yesterday. Decisions.
I'm miffed at AG. My books won't be here til Friday. :(
Highlights thus far:
- Monster High minis which I imagine are going to be blind bags considering how many there are and how they're $2.99. They've got a fall 'date.' So far away.
- American Girl MegaBloks which are gonna be expensive as hell, but they've got Truly Me and past Girl of the Year characters ready to go. The hope, in fandom when they're not busy weighing in on Lego vs Megabloks, is that if these do well enough and there's interest, we might get some Historical action. (do eeeeeeeet!) Off the top of my head, there's Grace and her friends Ella and Maddy, McKenna, Isabelle, Saige, and Nicki, not to mention a slew of other figures.
- Pearlized Ponies! What... I miss brushables. Work got in the exclusive but after the initial first run, they haven't been moving and this at least looks interesting enough that I'll have to find them and buy. I miss you, brushables.
- Nightmare Night! Honestly, I wish I had the space to create a permanent display like this because ohmylord, the cute. It burns.
- Funko wants: the Descendants four, Luna Lovegood, Suicide Squad Harley and probably Scarlet Witch.
