I waited for eons for work to call about possibly closing last night and at dinner I notice that work called at quarter to four, so I have Mom listen to the messages and as she's doing that, I read that Anton Yelchin died. And for whatever reason that broke my heart into a million, billion pieces. :(
But as I'm actually gasping in horror over this, Mom is shoving the phone in my hands because the message I was waiting for had come up.
Work is closing, she says, but... I still have to come in for the first part of my shift. It was one of the options floated around, so it's not completely out of left field, but why bother staying open those last two hours, I wonder. Still, I repeat that I'll see them at 10 and hang up.
FF to getting to work and seeing a sign on the door that says we're closing at 11:30. For a second I wonder if I should try and flag Mums down but then realize I'm probably still gonna be there til 12 anyway, so in I go. And naturally work is freakishly busy... until 11 when things slow waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down.
I get the joy of changing the vacuum bag while wearing my brand new work pants. To be fair, I don't think I did it right but y'know, I'm not sure I've ever changed that bag before so who knows. Our vacuum is awful anyway. Then I face my three aisles and find some stolen stuff and wish that I'd thought to buy a snack or something before all the registers were shut down. And then it's midnight!
And we wait.
And wait.
And wait.
Eventually M&C call SCE&G who have no idea what they're talking about. Because why would they know about a planned outage, right? I mean, they're the only electric company in town (literally, they've got a monopoly here) so why would they know anything about this?
Call the store manager who says it's a private contractor and that's probably why SCE&G knows nothing. I dunno about you, but I'm filled with confidence right now. o_O
Btw, Mums has been there since before midnight, waiting for me. But do I get to leave? Nope.
Oh, sometime after I vacuum and C is mopping the floors (as this happens), the floor guys showed up. They didn't show at all last week and I guess the big boss man got a call from our store manager bitching him out about his employee sucking (I dunno, I'm guessing here) and they want to do the floor. I double check that we aren't supposed to let them in and since it's so close to when the power is supposed to be shut off, they say nope and I send them on their way.
Back to waiting. Eventually they talk to the SM again (or maybe it was the first call. I don't know, I kept being left out of things) and he says 1am or whenever they arrive, whichever happens first. M skips out around 12:30, our pharmacist follows a few minutes later (I think he was honestly trying to get them to let him stay so that Mums and I could go but it didn't work) and back to the waiting. Eventually a bunch of trucks pull up and I swear, as soon as they do, no less than eight cars of customers appear and no amount of "we're closed" will get some of them to leave without getting out of their cars.
It still takes forever to actually get to leave, especially since this is something that they really, really could have done without me. I guess they're supposed to have two people to lock up though so... enh. I did nothing, really, other than make sure she didn't skip through the store swiping shit. And point out that I'm pretty sure our alarm thing was saying "low battery" but there you go.
Came home, didn't do much, slept when it was dark outside, and voila. It is now summer. I considered swimming but decided I did not want to have to wash my hair again today. I do think that someone should remind me to try swimming sometime this week (tomorrow, maybe?) since I'm set to work a million days in a row. D:
And now we circle back to the sads. Sad.
Oh, and I totally need to bring food to work this week because the freezer/cooler stuff will have perished. I didn't even know our coolers had something that would come down and hide them from view!
