the ick

Yuck. I've had this cough for over a week now and I am tired of hacking up a lung. I think it's on the way out but I've been thinking that for a couple of days at this point so who knows. I'm trying not to complain too much because Mom's version is a zillion times worse. I just have the cough and the mucus filled lungs of dooooooom.

So to make myself feel better, I've been poking around the Halloweenforum. I've tried to not visit too much because I do know that once I settle in, it does tend to kind of take a bit of the sparkle of Halloween out for me. I guess I cannot sustain my love for that long? Or maybe having to kind of shove it aside for other things makes it harder to retain, I dunno. Still, for now I'm enjoying looking at the stupidly expensive things already popping up on sites and plotting what I would do if I had a house with a yard to decorate. And, y'know, the energy to do so. :P

In other news, Photobucket apparently got new management who decided that maybe making the internet ugly and holding pictures ransom for an ungodly sum was not a good look, so they freed the images and introduced a decently priced plan. This means I might actually get off my ass and do stuff again. In theory, I mean. It doesn't break my heart to look back through various posts here or on the SV side and just see a sea of broken images. Huzzah!

What else, what else. I need to get off my ass and finish the last few books from my TS-recommended bookathon so I can move on to the next round of books I requested.

Can we take a moment to bitch about my library's website? I think they updated a year ago from a very dull/boring/kinda ugly but functional site to a new and shiny site that looks cool but is complete and utter garbage at doing its job. Do a search on the old site and you get the materials you could, in theory, check out. Do a search on the new site and you get all the articles and anything even passingly mentioning your book/author/whatever. And all of that will show up before say, a book will. It's annoying as shit. I appreciate the ability to look up an author and find bits of news about them, but I'd much rather find the book I wanted first. There are ways around this but if you forget what happens when you just do a regular search, you're hit with a million answers and almost none of them are helpful.

I could live with this, btw. I can't live with the fact that in order to request a book and be guaranteed it's gone through, you have to use the classic (old) site. Yes, that's right. The new site is so bad at its job, even a year later, that you still have to use the old site to do the most basic of functions for a library website. It's not even me being a snot about it either. Mom asked various librarians for help and most of them will give you the spiel about the new site being so lovely and so much better and how amazing it is to have all these new bells and whistles and Mom will nod and then ask, "but how do I request a book and actually have it held for me on this new site?" Oh, no. You have to use the old site for it to do so reliably. It's possible for the new site to do it (in fact, most of the books I requested last go round went through on the new site) but it's also not something you can count on.

Worst of all: when you go to see when your books are due, half the time the new site will tell you, as you are looking at a pile of library books, that you have no books out at all. Mom racked up a massive fine around the time we had the flu because we both checked the site and it kept listing the next due date as something at the end of the month. Neither of us realized that it didn't put the books in order of due date like the old site... it's random. Mom complained mightily.

These are all issues the library knows about and have known about since the first week the stupid thing rolled out. I remember bitching when I first noticed the switch and I went to see if there was a trick to getting the new site to work and all their social media was a sea of announcements of the new site with comments all being "pretty but it's horrible and awful and here are all the things that do not work." And people weren't being obnoxious about it, they were genuinely trying to help the site get better and if anything it's gotten worse.

Clearly I have feelings about this because it's the thing I just vented about for the last billion words or so. :P

I should probably find something to eat since half the reason I woke up was because I was hungry. And that was hours ago.
