polish blather for the new year
Jan. 4th, 2025 11:31 amG'ah, I'm in that weird nebulous space where I'm tired but also 100% sure I wouldn't be able to sleep yet even if I went up right now. Mostly because yesterday I tried sleeping and it just... did not work. What the fuck. I keep forgetting January sun is my kryptonite.
On the... whatever side, today is the Holo Taco data stream which'll lead to retirements. I mostly just want to know which polishes are getting the axe but it's in a livestream and this could be awhile. I've gone through my wishlist and I'm not sure whether I'd miss any enough to try and snag them. I think I sat out last year's retirement fallout because the one polish I wanted a backup of sold out ASAP. Sooooooooooooo. We'll see how long it takes to either figure out what's likely to go or be told flat out.
eta: good forking grief that took forever.
She axed 17 polishes and a couple had been sold out for awhile anyway so they weren't surprises. Hell, I'm not sure any of the. No, I take that back.

Click for the full thing, too lazy to make a proper thumbnail as always.
Pretty sure people said Not Pressed and Love Spell were out of stock and had been for a bit. I know Love Spell was, as it was a lot of people's free space on their BINGO cards they made. So, supply chain issue took that one out. Not Pressed is a notorious stainer and a lot of people think it's ugly as fuck so that's no surprise. Green Screen is a green and an older polish, so not surprised. Butterscotch is an orange and older, so not surprised. (Shame, it's actually stupidly pretty for fall.) Work Bestie is the only warm purple creme the line has, so naturally it's being shunned. Tbf, I didn't give a shit about that release b/c cremes but I've also heard mixed things on the formula.
Party of One Purple is the one that shocked me because it's prettier and has a better formula than Resting Witch Face, which I'm pretty sure is still around? This is the ONLY one I'm truly surprised by.
Cracked is a bummer but crackle comes and goes in waves. Orange Drink & Amber Apathy have been on the worst sellers lists since they premiered basically. (Shaaaaaaaaame. Orange Drink is STUNNING.) Featured Guest fails in being a white holo and it's got formula issues, so not surprised, especially since she's released like 6 white shades in 2024. Maybe this took Cake out too? Cake's pretty, but older, and also people either love or hate it. I'm a little surprised by Sugar Rush, b/c it's so new but again, they released possibly literally 5/6 white polishes last year. Solo Mission is fucking ugly to the point that when one of the HT surveys asked what was the ugliest polish in the entire line, I completely forgot it existed. It's also the ONLY polish from that line I didn't buy.
Crimson Void suffered from being far too similar to Dead Petals, a polish that it premiered with, and I think people liked Petals more. Purple Slushie is a surprise to some degree, but at some point someone must've mentioned it as a possibility because it didn't shock me. Again, shame because STUNNING. (I actually got Slushie and Orange Drink together. Very Halloween.) Flash Drive was from the criminally underrated Lite Mode collection, though seriously, Sunset is still around over Flash Drive? Wtf. Party Punch is an OG glitter, which means its days were numbered once she started aggressively taking the holo out of holo taco. (Yes, I'm bitter.) BUT I am also hopeful that maybe this means Ruby might get to stick around? Yeah, probably not. Tomorrow I'll watch the reasoning section of the livestream but I need to sleep.
I did put in a small order because I wanted to grab the two seasonal polishes (Miss Fire and Going Solo), a backup of Ruby because uh, yeah, I think I'll actually wear it enough to justify a backup, and then grabbed Green Screen, Work Bestie, Sugar Rush, Glow in the Dark taco, and Crime and Punishmint as a freebie. GitD because it's seasonal and also the best green glow in the dark I've used. Green Screen and Work Bestie because Cristine was sporting a skittle with them, Butterscotch, and Party of One and it looks like the perfect Mardi Gras skittle, so maybe I'll do that. Sugar Rush was on my roll the dice list and some pics I love it, some I don't, so we'll see.
All in all, I did a decent job of staying ahead of the retirement axe since I either own most of these or had absolutely no interest in anything beyond the three I scooped up. Yay?
