Take a book! I got a lot of fine reading done while I was on jury duty...for six months. And then a few months ago I got another summons for that duration! And it had only been 6 months since my last stint ended! At least they excused me cause of that, but still wtf.
Our city's love of alcohol and domestic violence? It was for municipal court and as far as I can tell, they recently changed the laws so that when the cops get called out on DV situations, even the if the victim reneges, charges are automatically filed since people just kept being stupid and the situation repeats itself ad nauseium. Ditto on the DUI stuff.
So they have tons of those cases when before there weren't enough of the smaller crimes that would ever go to trial so I guess it was just easier to get a big pool for a long time than keep making new ones. Usually the trials were only Thurs/Fri so at least it was only 2 days out of the week and I only actually served on one jury, but just the 6 months of unknowing schedules was annoying.
That is a special brand of ...special right there. My last forray into JD was for municipal court but I lucked out because it was December and it seems that most of those cases either get moved or pled out (I did get to sit there while someone admitted to a whole lot of credit card fraud or something) because no one wants to work before the holidays.
I'd go insane for six months, two days a week. Instead I have a week of calling a phone number and praying, "Please no murder trials, please no murder trials."
