In other news, to deal with the bad thing that happened last week, I took Lori's advice and watched the new She-Ra reboot.

I have some thoughts.

First up, we must discuss the elephant in the room when the subject of the reboot comes up and that is the art style. It is a pretty radical departure from the original and lets you know right off the bat that there's a lot of stuff that was changed. I'll be honest: one of the few things for me that did manage to withstand the test of time on She-Ra was the art/animation for the most part. I tried rewatching the original when it hit DVD when Widget was younger and it was... not a great idea. I'm not sure if I'd feel the same way now (and I might give it another whirl since it's on Netflix) but at the time none of the three of us watching wanted to keep going after awhile.

But I still mostly dig the art. The reboot... eh? Some things I love. I think Adora's design is pretty friggin' awesome and I love it. It took me a minute, but I'm pretty fond of Bow and I love the various body shapes being shown. Legit love that there's diversity in all sorts of ways. Shadow Weaver is another awesome look, btw. Others don't really do it for me. She-Ra herself is probably the biggest swing and a miss. There are some moments I like her look and then others where I don't. Not sure if I was more distracted by this due to the events of the week or if it's just that she reminds me of something and I don't know what and it's low-key bugging me. Not that anyone asked, but Catra is probably the biggest departure for me since original Catra is gorgeous and new Catra is entirely different. But she's fun and I can love them both the way I love the book and movie versions of, say, Practical Magic even though they are wildly different beasts.

Story wise, I enjoyed myself. Some things felt more than a little repetitious but again, could have been my brain space or it could be that kids stuff does tend to repeat things. I enjoyed the episodes and wound up watching more than I intended to once I began the series, though as Glimmer tried to keep things from her mother I realized I am officially Old because I was on Angella's side. "Just tell your mother so we can avoid the next round of wacky hijinks and she's not gonna yell and oh god, I'm old" might've been a thing I thought once or twice. :P

I love me some backstory and we got some, we got a lot teased, and while the first season is essentially "get the band back together!" with "friendship breakdown" thrown in, the latter is one of my favorite things so... not really complaining.

But I walked away with a surprising favorite.

SCORPIA.

I say surprising because she's one I don't have strong kid!me memories of but reboot Scorpia? Is adorable and I will fight you if you think otherwise. :P When she tells Catra that the other princesses weren't really all that great to her family even before the family went to the Horde, well, I fell in love. Okay, fine, she had me at hugging Catra. I really like the trio of Entrapta/Scorpia/Catra, though I do feel like Catra's got one foot out the door at any time. But it works and is probably my favorite friend dynamic on the show.

I thought I had more to say but mostly it's "you should give it a whirl" and "I would like that second season now, k?" As soon as I post this, I'll think of a thousand other things but until then...

Scorpia is one of my faves for sure. Because she is Kronk.

Entrapta I was "eh" on until she got with the Horde. She has a way better dynamic with Catra and Scorpia than the Rebellion.

I plan on rewatching and posting all my comments somewhere. Maybe both here and in my doll blog.

I just can't with the new artwork - I'll stick with the 80s version, please. Most of the people in my realm who have watched it are all YAY DIVERSITY! and stuff like that just doesn't impress me. I don't think I should be obligated to like something just because there are lots of characters different skin tones.

Of course, I am a snob about my 80s shows (rather amazing, considering there was a time in my life when I hated everything 80s), so YMMV.
