First of the year, you know what that means. GOTY roundup post.
Blaire Doll & Book // $115

Item#GBL30
Meet Blaire, the 2019 Girl of the Year! She’s a chef-in-training, party planner, and chicken wrangler at her family’s farm and restaurant. The 18" Blaire doll has bright green eyes that open and close, and curly red hair. She has a huggable cloth body, and her movable head and limbs are made of smooth vinyl. She comes with the Blaire paperback book, plus her signature outfit:
Her favorite dress with a bumblebee print and gathered tie—details that Blaire loves
A sunny yellow bandanna bracelet she wears while gardening
A hair comb with pink flowers that remind her of a bouquet
Purple platform sandals
Not my favorite promo picture of Blaire, honestly. But in just about everything else she looks 100% better, so I'll just chalk this up to AG's failtography and move on to my other nitpicks. For instance, her extras? Lame. That yellow bandana that does not seem practical in any way and that hair comb is going to do terrible things to her complicated meet hairdo. Which is probably the fanciest thing about Blaire, honestly. I love the idea of Blaire and all the components when I think about them as pre-super cheap years, but you can tell that she was designed and produced in the cheap times before they realized, "Ohshit, people aren't paying for just our name anymore. We actually have to back that up with quality or they'll continue to buy elsewhere!" Realistically I should wait and see if they do another batch with better eyes/old body fabric. And I might, but probably won't unless I get mad at all the coupons floating around out there.
Because for all the people who say she's just Rebecca with red hair, I love her more. If we can have 137 million classic molds where the only differences are, you guessed it, hair and eyes, then we can have Josefina mold!61/redhair!Rebecca. Because she's the lighter vinyl (sold), green eyes (I mean, they're no laser eyes but still, sold), and a redhead with curls. Short of freckling the hell out of her, I'm not sure it's possible to make me want her more. On paper. Still not sure how I feel about this shift to orange lips. o_O (Untrue. I do know and I don't love it.)
Wow. For a doll I was willing to pay full price for should AG had extended the Berry preview to all Berry members and not just like 100 lucky enough to live by a store, I sure have a lot of complaints. And I still very much want her. I just see the flaws, I suppose.
Blaire's Accessories // $30

Item#GBL35
Blaire has a blast designing and planning, and her accessories help keep her organized! Includes:
A canvas tote with rose-colored straps and a flower graphic on the front to hold all of her party-planning supplies
A faux tablet with interchangeable screens she uses to work on her food blog, as well as look up new recipes and add to her inspiration boards
A striped clipboard for forms and a fancy pen for writing notes
A party-planning notebook with tear-off pages, featuring multiple designs to help plan different elements and stickers to highlight important tasks
A pretend bouquet of fresh flowers straight from her own garden to help brighten any space
A postcard of what her family sells at the local farmers market
Those are some pricey accessories, AG. But I will say that you get a fair amount for the price and it's got some playability, so I suppose I shall let it slide. And it's all very much in character for Blaire, so there's that as well.
Blaire's In Bloom PJs // $24

Item#GBL34
Blaire is always dreaming up new ideas for her decorating projects and recipes. Her purple pajama tee has flutter sleeves and a “Let your mind bloom” graphic. Wildflower-print shorts feature ruffled edges, and cozy purple slippers have faux-fur pom-poms on the toes.
Well, if you insist, I suppose I could be convinced to want to buy these PJs.
Blaire's Floral Flair Outfit // $28

Item#GBL32
Blaire is always ready for a trip to the local farmers’ market or craft store to find inspiration for her projects. Outfit includes:
A wildflower-print tunic with plum-colored ties and buttons
Plum-colored leggings to match
A scalloped headband for a pop of color in her red curls
Orange crisscross slide sandals
Still not sold on this one, actually. Orange and purple is always very dependent on the shades used and I... dunno. It's not hideous but it's still not something I looooooove, y'know?
Blaire's Garden Accessories // $20

Item#GBL37
Blaire loves to help her mom by growing ingredients for the family’s farm-to-table restaurant. Set includes:
A floral apron with front pockets to hold fresh-picked herbs
A pair of garden gloves to protect her hands while she works
A wide-brimmed hat to protect her from the sun
There, do you hear that? That's the sound of every Kit, Melody, and possibly Lanie gearing up to buy the shit out of this set. Beware the stampede.
Personally, this is something that I think might grow on me but isn't something I absolutely must buy right off the bat.
Blaire's Garden // $50

Item#GBL36
The garden is one of Blaire’s favorite places on her family’s farm—full of vibrant color and edible flowers, it’s easy to find inspiration for new dishes or designs whenever she visits. Includes:
A raised garden structure with rich pretend soil, holes for an interchangeable set of plants to grow, plant markers, and a removable nesting box for chickens
Blaire’s favorite white Silkie chicken, Dandelion, or “Dandy” for short, and her nest with pretend eggs
A shovel Blaire can hold and use for digging, plus a watering can with flower art to keep plants hydrated
A basket to carry tools, freshly picked produce, or even newly laid eggs back to the restaurant
I know everyone flipped their shit over the Silkie chicken (Dandelion), and it was very sneaky of AG to include what is basically Blaire's pet in the expensive garden set, but... I'm not really sold on the cuteness of Dandy? I want to like this set more than I do. Dandy's nesting box just feels shoehorned in on this set. I do like the garden, though I do think that Blaire would benefit from Tenney's hands and the ability to hold the watering can so that's, I dunno, useful and not pointing the wrong way. :P
Blaire's Gardening Outfit // $32

Item#GBL33
Whether planting, watering, weeding, or harvesting, Blaire loves tending to the kitchen garden that supplies her family’s farm-to-table restaurant with fresh food. Outfit includes:
Denim shortalls with straps and pockets, plus embroidered flowers she added herself
A smocked top she wears off the shoulders
A ribbon choker necklace that highlights her green eyes
Green farm boots that keep her feet dry while she’s in the garden
Blaire, honey, child. Why are you wearing a choker when doing outdoor chores? Why, girl, why? Other than that, this is probably the outfit I will buy first because it's stupidly cute, seems functional if a doll outfit can be so, and I love me some boots of almost any kind, it seems. Oh fine, you got me. Pigtails will make me buy/love almost anything. FINE. You win. Are you happy?
Blaire's Piglet // $20

Item#GBL39
Blaire loves to take care of animals on the farm—especially this sweet baby piglet! She’s light pink with brown spots, and she has embroidered eyes and a cute pig nose.
So this piglet is adorable, yes? But is never mentioned in any of her stories. I can only assume it'll appear in book 3 but if not, it's still cuter than it has any right to be, dammit. *grabby hands*

Blaire's Lamb // $25

Item#GBL38
Blaire is thrilled when her family adopts Penelope, a baby lamb, from a neighboring farm. This plush lamb has curly white fur, a sweet embroidered face, and a ribbon collar with flowers Blaire made.
But where, oh where, is Dash the goat?! Seriously though, Penelope here is adorable and I suspect that more than one Felicity will find herself in possession of one. Penelope will be joining my odd menagerie of AG pets, however.
Blaire's Bridesmaid Dress // $36

Item#GBL31
Cat, the farm manager, is like a big sister to Blaire. So when Cat gets engaged, Blaire asks to help plan the big day! When she gets to be a junior bridesmaid, she’s thrilled to wear this fancy outfit:
A pale blue dress embroidered with a delicate floral pattern, sparkling with sequins, and featuring sheer cap sleeves that remind Blaire of fairy wings
A headband decorated with pink flowers
A velvet choker necklace she chose for the finishing touch
Ballet flats with scalloped edges and glittering rhinestones on the toes—perfect for dancing at the reception!
Definitely one I thought I wouldn't like as much as I think I do because the promo pictures don't do it justice. But when looking at the various pictures from the preview shopping, the dress seems more substantial and I can forgive the hi-low hem because it's not a complete mullet of a dress. Those shoes, however, are unforgivable and AG should be deeply ashamed. So. Fucking. Ugly.
Blaire's Party Decor $85

Item#GBL41
Blaire wants to make sure Cat’s farm wedding décor looks just as beautiful as the bride. Includes:
An arbor that stands at the entrance of her family’s apple orchard, which Blaire decorates with a set of hanging fans and sheer lilac curtains
A fancy three-tiered cake with floral icing, three cake toppers, and two cake pieces that can be served to guests
A copper-colored cake plate, 2 matching metal forks, and a metal cake server
Two dessert plates with “Love” graphics
A tall white table with a lilac-colored drape and copper bow
A freshly picked bouquet with a ribbon wrap that Blaire holds as a junior bridesmaid
A heart-shaped wish notepad with tear off pages to write the bride and groom special notes and a wish vase to hold flowers or notes
Huh. This is something I thought I would like more than I do and I think it's because the colors they chose are very muted and very, forgive the Stacey McGill in me, sophisticated and thus kind of blah? The pink seems out of step since it's not really repeated anywhere else and doesn't manage to make everything else pop. The lilac looks dull and I'm going to have to poke around the early release images to see if this is something that simply looks better in person. That arbor, though, probably will look amazing paired with Samantha's gazebo.

Blaire's Family Farm Restaurant // $300

Item#GBL40
Blaire loves testing recipes in her mom’s restaurant kitchen and blogging about their cooking adventures on the farm’s website. They use fresh ingredients that they grow on their family farm! Includes lots of food for playtime:
A wooden open-air restaurant and kitchen with a service window so waiters can bring dishes out to guests
A reversible floor with faux grass for dining on one side, and a dance floor on the other
A farmhouse sink cabinet for washing dishes
A double-oven stove with a storage cabinet for cooking up delicious dishes
A farmhouse-style table and two green benches for dining
Pale-blue flour canister and sugar canister
Pretend iron sauce pan and copper stock pot
A mixing spoon for stirring
Freshly made cornbread and a baking pan that fit inside the oven
Salt and pepper shakers
A pretend chef’s knife for chopping ingredients
A bottle of olive oil for drizzling
Garnish stickers for the plates
A wedge of parmesan cheese and a cheese grater
Six eggs in a carton
A vase with a bouquet Blaire picked from her garden
Four placemats, menus, metal forks and knives; a dinner plate set; four drink glasses; and four dessert plates
Two reversible posters for decorating the kitchen
Two pretend string lights that hang from the pergola
A three-tiered service cart with a removable serving tray for bringing food from the kitchen
A stacked caprese salad
Fresh-baked bruschetta
Fettucine noodles and a salmon fillet
A gourmet baked pumpkin with a fried egg inside
A bowl of chocolate ice cream
A slice of lemon cake
So, I almost never actually want the big ticket items AG puts out. Over the years I haven't bought a single one, though there have been a couple I've been very, very tempted by. I really wanted Mia's bed but then Samageddon happened and I wanted Nellie more. I really wanted Izzy's studio but we moved so that didn't happen. I wanted Caroline's Parlor but I was afraid we'd have to move and I didn't want to lug it through a move. We didn't and I mourned the loss. I missed grabbing Sam's gazebo because I dithered about whether I would have space for it. But just about everything else I've been pretty good about admiring from afar (seriously, had I the space, Saige's hot air balloon would have happened just because wtf) or wondering what someone was smoking when the idea was floated by everyone else.
That said, if AG has any brains and wants my money, they will send me a coupon that'll overlap when I have funds (so, y'know, tax time) because if they do, I will buy the everloving shit out of this. I mean that. Coupon + tax time? SOLD. No coupon and I will likely be smart enough to save my money. But I want this and I can't even really articulate why beyond whimpering about cuteness and wanting to play, dammit.
I will say that watching that video did dial back my want just a smidge. I think the idea/concept is pretty awesome, but seeing the AG sized plastic cups my Barbies used to have back in the 80's? Not the prettiest expression my face has ever made. There's nostalgia and then there's just being wrong.

Blaire's Floral Tote for Girls // $40

Item#GBM87
Just like Blaire’s! This woven twill bag can be worn crossbody with the adjustable rose-colored strap. Or, take it off to convert to a tote. Features a wildflower graphic on the front, and an interior pocket for organization. Cotton. Imported. Tan.
I know, I know. I never include the girl sized stuff unless it's to show an alternate view of the doll, but I think this is like the bag of Grace's that I wanted and missed. Something that's priced way too high for what it is (and thus you're definitely just paying for the name) but stupidly cute and calling my name. Loudly.
Lesse. Overall we have seven wants/pretty much definite buys (Blaire herself, her Meet accessories, her PJs, her bridesmaid dress, piglet, lamb, and gardening outfit), one stars align want (farm/restaurant), and the rest are I could probably be persuaded, though I doubt I'll buy the Decor set because for $85, I'm gonna need it to ~wow~ me and thus far it does not. I want to say this is the first collection in awhile I've wanted quite so much, but I might just be getting carried away by wanting/seriously considering the big item.
Let's review quickly, shall we? I liked a good chunk of Luci's, but piss poor quality control/jacked up prices kept me away from a fair bit. Gabby's was kinda hideously hit or miss (sorry, my love), I didn't love Lea's collection as a whole (though I did like/love bits)... Grace's is probably the last collection I bought most of the outfits? To be fair though, I think I got most of that on sale. I think I ponied up the most for Izzy's stuff but never did get the doll herself. So... it's been awhile. Gonna go through and see what GOTY stuff has conned me over the years but now is NOT the time.
The point of that diversion was that it's rare for me to want the doll and most, if not all, of her stuff. I usually like something in the GOTY's collection and frequently like the doll, but rarely do I like both the doll and the majority of her collection. Good job, Blaire. :D

Date: 2019-01-01 02:08 pm (UTC)I can't with some of this stuff (food blog?? chokers are a thing again??) but I think that's a sign of me growing old and feeling the need to vigorously shake my stick at those pesky kids to get off my lawn.
That bridesmaid's dress is hideous and those "shortalls" are a crime against doll fashion IMO. (That view from the back is just...no.) It is interesting that they're tapping into the FFA market, tho. If my tween cousin is anything to go by, agriculture is a Hot Topic amongst the young set right now.

Date: 2019-01-01 07:38 pm (UTC)Thus far in her books the food blog is super minor and really only seems to be something the locals comment on and that I chalk up to small town keeping up with their own. The choker thing is blowing my mind though. Also making me twitch because I like the look of chokers but I put one on and promptly start, y'know, choking. :P *passes the cane* You tell them youngins!
Since I shall rarely see the back of the shortalls, I shall be safe in my continued love of tragic fashion. ;) I... really don't see how that top is comfy at all for gardening, though. My mom went through a phase where I had three or four similar tops and they were pretty but they were not comfy for doing work and would ride the fuck up. I am surprised I've come around to liking the bridesmaid dress since my first reaction was "burn it with fire!"
