Birthday went off in the most low-key way possible: nary a phone call in sight and the only people who dropped by were family. Which my brain could very easily spin in bad ways* but instead I rolled with it because my expectations for the day were pretty much nil.
I woke up at some weird hour, like 3am or something and was hungry because a) my body is used to 4am being lunch time at work and b) dinner had been early and relatively small. So I dug around in the fridge, found stuff that really should've made it to the trash and yet did not (dammit!) and found some food. And just about the time you're too far into cooking to shove anything back in the fridge, a massive thunderstorm rolls through. Whoops. The power kept flickering but didn't go out. I had my food, scrolled through birthday offers in my email once the storm had moved on, and ultimately decided I needed a nap after sending Widget off to work, being a little sad panda at that since I'd hoped he'd join me for part of my morning swim.
My plan for the day was simple: wake up around 8am, check the weather and either go swimming before heading home to shower and then off to the north area to buy some Halloween shiny things OR skip the swimming and get a headstart on the shopping. But it was relatively sunny when I woke up so I decided to chance the rain.
Swimming went well as no one joined me other than three frogs I had to rescue from the pool. No one had thrown any furniture into the pool (which they had the last time I went in) so I swam around until my internal clock said it was time to go. Mostly that's also tied to whether the sun has taken away my shady corner of the pool but it also has to do with how warm my face/shoulders are, in case you ever needed to know. Toweled off a little and then headed home, wondering why everyone was packing up their cars on a Wednesday morning. Briefly wondered if I'd somehow missed a hurricane notice but nope. Woke Mums up and hit the shower and headed off on my day of adventure!
We hit At Home because I have a 15% off coupon and they've got a good chunk of Halloween stuff out... and then Mums stayed in the car because At Home is huge (it's in the old Sam's Club building so yeah, big) and despite texting with Cass, who blew off the meeting that she'd said was what was keeping her from visiting with me and yet... didn't drive the five minutes down the road because of the weather which, guys, the rain and thunder were non-existent until I stepped foot outside the building and I was in there for awhile, and admiring the pretty shiny things, I didn't find anything I wanted enough to buy right then. There were some things I liked, a lot, and a few things I'd totally have bought if we had the room and the money, but ultimately the only thing I wanted enough to buy was a Spooky pillow and literally every single one I could reach was messed up in some way. And just when I'd decided maybe I could tell myself the flaws on the first one could be an intentional thing, I noticed that the stitching on the P was already unraveling so nope.
Left without buying a thing. Which was really surprising as I'd gone there specifically to buy something. o_O
Like I said, as soon as I stepped outside the rains unleashed and I got the joy of watching one of those very clear lightning strikes in the distance as we drove back to our side of town. We stopped at Michael's to see if they had anything, as again, coupon. No Halloween at all, though some fall was out already. I grabbed a couple of DC Bombshell Funko blindboxes but as I hit the line I realized it was backed aallllllllll the way back up and decided fuck it. I'm not sure I made the right call on that as one of the kids I saw in line (I'm guessing either everyone brought their kids to avoid the rain OR there was a class that had just let out) came out not too long after I did, but it's also possible he wasn't really in line proper. Decided it wasn't worth going back in as the rain said hello again, and off we went to pick up lunch (where they messed up the order twice and of course the second mess-up wasn't noticed til we got home and it was one of mine. Oops.) and then hit Joann's where they had Halloween fabric and some cute fall stuff but again, nothing I wanted to buy. I ran next door to Marshall's and sniffed some candles and found some cute lights for little one, but didn't buy because the color scheme was wrong. Went back to the car and off we went to the gas station... and home.
Where Widget met us, showered, and then had Mom take him out after he ran most of the trash out since he was spending the night at a friend's.
This is getting long but we're almost done despite the fact that it's not even 3pm at this point. Ate my lunch, discussed dinner ideas again and came up with the following options:
1) Ham & cheese casserole, which is my favorite meal everrrrrrrrrr. But it is labor intensive and not really suited to summer months. But delicious.
2) Hit Outback and actually go out for once. I was actually really leaning towards this but had one or two reservations. Namely, the last time we had their curbside meal, it was disappointing in the extreme and also I hate being social and going out most of the time.
2a) Chance the curbside thing again.
3) Get steak and make it at home!
Was really leaning towards going out, but couldn't get a hold of my brother (whose birthday is two days before mine, so y'know, invite him to dinner as part of his birthday meal too) for the longest time and by the time we did, I was kinda zonked and Mom didn't seem to want to go out for an extended period of time either. So curbside it was.
It was actually really good this time, so I don't know what the hell happened before. After dinner, we finally got around to watching Captain Marvel again so we could see the first ten minutes or so we'd missed in the theaters (asshole, I shall never forgive or forget!) and a piece of key lime pie concluded my birthday.
My two gifts were a pack of Uno cards and a glitter mascara topper that I have every intention of using over my white mascara ASAP.
I did get a donation on the FB fundraiser thing I decided to do since the people most likely to donate to that wouldn't buy me a gift anyway, but of course the donation was from someone who had, in the past, given a gift. I'd say whoops, but good cause and all that.
Oh, and if you were dying to know, the birthday nail color this year was Essie's Tangoed In Love which I did not realize was matte, despite the fact that the link I just included mentioned it. So I got a little chuckle when I realized that back when I bought it, I'd also bought a matte top coat without realizing they were kinda made for each other. That said, I prefer this with a shiny top coat as without it looks kinda plastic-y and it's just prettier with a glossy finish. So I'll be redoing my right hand (the one without the glossy topcoat) sometime today. Also? It perfectly matched most of the Halloween lights I checked out yesterday AND my bathing suit. Snazzy.
