Last week's AG release
May. 3rd, 2021 04:24 amSo my COVID arm kinda got better and then got weirder. Seems about right, I suppose.
Anyway, last week AG dropped some new things and I think tomorrow is the tentative new release date for the 35th anniversary dolls. I believe the current rumor has them re-releasing the first six* along with their Meet accessories and likely a special in some way box for possibly, maybe ballpark of $150. Though that last bit could be someone's speculation that just caught on. Let's knock out the * issue:
People keep saying the "original" six. There is no original six. PC came out with Kirsten, Sam, and Molly first and it was just them for years until they brought Felicity to the party. Then they invited Addy, which was a big fucking deal, and then Josefina got an invite. So don't say original six or I'm gonna need to smack you.
As for the planned release... ehhhhhhhhhhh. Look. I know we all gave Sam a hard time for her BeForever outfit, but Addy's was pretty damn awesome. Josefina's was a lateral change at best, Molly didn't get one because AG fucking tanked themselves by cutting all the corners in creation and then wondering why newbies went, "wait, is this what everyone's hyped? This is shit. I can get the same stuff at Target for like, way less." Felicity also got hosed because unlike Josefina, Addy, and Sam, she didn't get a real collection out of her BF release. Fuck, Molly who only came out at Costco in a blink or miss her (well, I think she got a thirty second appearance during a sale on AG or zulily as well) got more of a collection than Felicity did. I had a point somewhere.
Oh. Yeah. This is kind of meh for me. I have 4/6 of those and my reasons for not having bought Josefina and Addy aren't going to change in these pandemic times. Josefina looks radically different depending on her eyebrow placement and for the last few years they've given her the shit end of the stick on that so I'd need to pick her out in person or truly trust someone else to do it. Or, y'know, buy one online that I could see which doll I was getting. Addy is one I could go either way on, but I haven't bought one for myself yet because Cass is very protective of the Addy Jess and I bought her and it feels like stepping on toes getting one. Plus if I did, I'd want the impossible: the textured hair that they seem to have kind of stomped out of Addy in recent years but with the BF eyebrows because older Addys kinda look washed out more often than not. I also prefer the BF outfit, heathen that I am.
I'm happy people will have a chance to snag Kirsten (my poor forgotten baby) or Felicity new, though I cackle to myself that they quietly threw Felicity out not that long ago and now they're bringing her back for what, a fifth time? Felicity's revenge!
Mix in people who are expecting way more than the above and you've got a terrible breeding ground for bitter disappointment. *shrug*
So. New stuffs. Birthday Party Theme!

Take The Cake Birthday Outfit // $38
Item#GYD89
Everyone will know just who to celebrate with this outfit that includes:
An iridescent sequin mini dress that provides the perfect amount of party sparkle
A purple headband featuring a small gift covered with silver glitter and tied with a ribbon bow on top of a tulle pouf
A satin sash that spells out “Happy Birthday” in rainbow colors
A multicolored beaded bracelet
A pair of iridescent high-top sneakers
A faux cupcake with bright pink frosting that comes in a translucent blue plastic cup with glitter and a handle so the doll can hold it
Sometimes I see an outfit and I wonder if perhaps it was designed for exactly one doll in particular with the assumption that any other doll was welcome to wear it, but it was meant for just that one. Not including character dolls, of course. And this kind of feels like the case with 88 here. I'm pretty sure it'd look pretty good on 86, 90, or 91 but it feels made for cotton candy hair here. Anyway. I like the cupcake thing and I hope they incorporate it into other sets. I don't mind that this exists but it's something I don't really love. I'm okay on the dress but the headband is doofy and none of the rest of the stuff is calling my name. I haven't written it off entirely but it's definitely a sale or no deal purchase for me.
Btw, for $15 more, you can get the headband for girls. Ooh. Ahh.

Day at the AG Cafe Set // $180
Item#GYD87
It’s the perfect place for a doll birthday party! Celebrate with this set that looks just like the Café at an American Girl store. It includes:
An L-shaped booth with a black-and-white-striped high back, printed vinyl backrest, berry-colored vinyl seats with room for two dolls, and a pink floral print on the back of the wall
A decorative sign that has “Café” molded into the top and a clear plastic sleeve that holds a printed sign card featuring menu items: “Icy Cold Drinks” “Scrumptious Starters” and “Marvelous Mains”
A pink square table with a metallic base
A table talker box that holds 25 doll-sized table talker cards just like you’d find in an American Girl Café!
Two folded menus that have a pink floral graphic cover with menu items printed inside
A silver watering can centerpiece that holds three fabric pink daisies
A pink apron with the American Girl logo on the front
Two white cloth napkins in two napkin rings that have a white elastic band and a pink bow
Two clear glasses of pretend pink lemonade with a floating lemon slice in each
Two plates and two silver metallic forks to enjoy lunch or dinner
A white doll cup and a doll saucer
A bright-pink mini doll Treat Seat that clips onto the table so a mini doll can join the party
A six-inch mini doll with wavy pink-and-aqua hair and a foil-print dress
People have lost their minds over this set because they desperately want the mini but don't have the space or interest in the rest. And I must admit something: it wasn't until a couple of days after this had been released that I realized this wasn't a mini-sized set, so I spent the first few days being very confused as to all the size issues. Also the price. In my defense, I also don't care that much about this set at all and I think they leaned way too hard into the weird teeth placement on the classic mold minis, this one in particular, so I'm always distracted by that. With that being said, had AG been able to churn this out sooner, i think they'd have done pretty well with it for all the kids (whose families could afford an AG party) who had to celebrate in quarantine. I imagine there's still a fair amount of kids who will because their parents aren't complete idiots but not as many as last year. But I also don't blame them for going for it, especially as they close down the stores at an alarming rate.

Take The Cake Birthday Cart // $75
Item#GYD85
Take the party on the go! This set includes everything needed for a spectacular celebration:
A rolling gray cart with a handle, a removable pink tray top, and two shelves to hold all of the birthday party supplies
Two party cups with a fun print
A musical rainbow cake with faux frosting decorations and sprinkles that plays “Happy Birthday” when you press the candle on top
Two faux cake slices that can be removed from the cake to put on plates
Two party plates with white centers and pink edges
Two party napkins with a festive print
Two silver metal forks for enjoying the cake
A sunny yellow cake stand to hold the rainbow cake
A silver metal cake server
Two polka dot-print party hats, with pink pom-poms on top and elastic straps to hold them on
Two blue-and-pink noisemakers that a doll can hold
A pink translucent balloon with a birthday cupcake graphic and a handle for dolls to hold
So many thoughts competing for attention. First is my deep amazement for just how much impact GOTY Grace had on AG's offerings in the years since she was introduced. Seriously, if you want the full birthday Cafe experience, you have to shell out another $75 on top of the $180 you already did to get the cake and party stuff. But if you don't want the cafe crap, you get the joy of spending more than you probably want since there's a cart with the ugliest gold they could find short of yellow gold. I just... who knew?
Also, where's the birthday girl? I assume she refused to wear this stupid hat that looks just as bad on a doll as it would on a child and points for accuracy on the chin band, I suppose. But if we're gonna swap out models, couldn't we have chosen a brunette and a different skin tone? Maybe? No? Okay.
Love the cake. Love the cake stand. I actually would buy all the stuff without the cart. Rainbow all the things! But damn, now I really want cake.

Fun and Games Birthday Party Accessories // $35
Item#GYD86
Take any birthday party to the next level with this entertainment set that includes:
A doll-sized faux FUJIFILM INSTAX™ Mini 11 instant camera to capture the moment. Dolls can really hold the camera with a wrist strap. And she can push the side button to make the lens pop forward and press the shutter button to make the photo pop up!
Four INSTAX™ photos of fun party memories
One pair of pink smiling party prop lips, a pair of party prop glasses with blue-green glitter lenses, and a pair of pink and white heart-shaped party prop glasses for photo booth fun
Two rainbow colored game cards featuring bingo, a word search, and a “how to draw a cake” activity
Two pink elastic doll bracelets with a gold star charm and pink enamel details
Two sheets of stickers with 24 total stickers in a rainbow palette
Two fancy faux drinks with pink and white swirls, whipped topping, sprinkles, and a blue straw
Two rainbow goody bags to take the party fun home
Oh, there's birthday girl. I know those are bracelets but I keep thinking they are pet collars and it's killing me. Killing meeeeeee. Also, I love that AG has chopped this release up into a billion little parts. That's truly the PC way. *tear* I dig the camera and kid me would've lusted hardcore over the pictures because I was a weirdo that way and loved the little pictures and postcards you could pretend were really part of doll world. It's cute enough but I don't love so I shall pass unless there's a sale so I can snag the camera.

Rainbow Birthday Outfit for Wellie Wishers // $24
Item#GFY75
It’s so much fun to celebrate friends—especially on their birthdays! The WellieWishers invite everyone to sparkle and shine in this outfit that includes:
A dress with a sparkly bodice, a flowy rainbow skirt, and flutter sleeves
A headband with a sparkly party hat attached
A glittery choker-type necklace
A pair of sparkly white shoes that match the bodice of the dress with pink satin bows on the back
*shrug* It's not terrible, it's not wonderful. It simply is. And it's also making me remember one of the cheerleading Skippers I had as a kid because of the sparkly bodice thing. Ah, memories. I'd rather take the money and blow it on Skipper again, honestly. But WW stuff is very, very hit or miss for me and that's fine.

Birthday Treat Set for WWs // $24
Item#GFY77
Who’s ready for a party? This set has everything the WellieWishers need to celebrate a birthday, including plenty of sweet treats. It includes:
A rainbow birthday cake with multiple layers and flower decorations—with two big slices taken out of it
Two cake slices that can be fit back into the cake
A unicorn cake topper that says “Happy Birthday”
A green cake stand
A cake server to make sure every friend has a slice
Two plates and two forks for enjoying a taste of birthday treats
A clear pitcher full of faux pink lemonade
Two pretend lemonade drinks in clear glasses with the WellieWishers logo
Two flower-print napkins
Okay, the unicorn is adorable and I like the lemonade stuff. But that "rainbow" cake is not a rainbow and also I'm just going to point out that every kid at a party eating a cake with such a frosting color would have a green face for the next several days. Not the cute idea you think it is, mmkay? And this knowledge makes me dock points, sadly. Love the green cake stand and the plates and if they'd just done a cute actual rainbow cake with this, or I liked the cake more, I'd probably buy this just because.

Birthday Cupcake Kitchen for WWs // $48
Item#HCD95
The WellieWishers know there's no sweeter way to say happy birthday to a friend than with a cupcake they baked themselves! This set includes:
A pink kitchen with an oven that opens and closes, working knobs, a countertop for prepping treats, storage for all sorts of baking equipment, and a clock with movable hands
A mixer with a beater that really spins
A set of colorful measuring spoons
A mixing bowl big enough to bake a whole batch of treats
A cupcake tin that fits two cupcakes
An oven mitt dolls can wear with an owl graphic for taking pans out of the oven
An icing bag to pretend decorating fancy desserts
Two containers of colorful pretend sprinkles to make every cupcake feel more special
Two faux decorated cupcakes to share with friends
A scalloped pink cupcake stand that spins so everyone can reach a treat
First up, I want those measuring spoons. Both in doll form and for me. Second, I can't believe I'm about to nitpick embroidering on something from AG but maybe that cute owl money could've gone to making the chocolate cupcake not look washed out and gross? Just maybe? Maybe the real one will look fine. The owl is cute and I love lots of little things but as with most WW stuff, I'm not any parts of the target demo and thus I shall love the little bits from afar and that's it.

Everything I need To Know I Learned From AG // $9.99
Item#HBL86
Take a peek into the past for wise and witty advice from the American Girls. Over the centuries, these girls have faced everything from brothers to bullies to boiled turnips. Their experiences have taught us how to survive and thrive. They’ve also taught us what it means to be a girl in any era: reach high, dream big, and speak out for what you believe in. With classic illustrations and memorable story moments, this book is a treasure for every American girl. 32 pages. Paperback. Author: American Girl Editors.
I'm gonna need you to take a moment and read that intro to the characters page and then tell me if you also got a weird look on your face from how some of these things are not like the others. There's also a Kitchen Chemistry book if that's more your thing.

Happy Birthday Outfit For Bitty Baby // $30
Item#GFY97
Hooray for birthdays! Bitty Baby will be ready to celebrate in this pretty party outfit that includes:
A white dress with a full skirt, pink embroidery on the bodice and hem, and a satin bow at the waist
A headband with a mesh and pink satin rosette
A pair of soft-soled shoes with scalloped edges and a satin ankle bow
I know we don't usually discuss Bitty Baby stuff around here because mostly it's meh but as this was something I actually bought, I figured we might as well have a look at it. :P I wasn't sure if the birthday code they sent me would expire at the end of April or when, especially since it was only in text form and I never got the email that should've gone with it. Soooooooo... I went with this as it made it essentially free shipping. I think this looks like kind of ass on the BB they're showing it on, but the first pictures I saw were from in store displays and they were fabulous and I need it.
Cass is taking Bitty of the Damned sometime soon so she will likely never wear this but I do have a Bitty Twin who will. It's just so pretty and gives me flashbacks to when BB was Our New Baby and for some reason my friends and I, who were all waaaaaaaaaaay past baby doll age, wanted one. BB's got other new things to go with this (a felt cupcake set and a doctor kit) but this is the only thing BB related in years I've wanted enough to essentially pay full price for. Also, I agree with the people who said it gives them Molly's birthday dress vibes. A+ in theory, anyway. I'll let you know how it pans out in reality.
Anyway, last week AG dropped some new things and I think tomorrow is the tentative new release date for the 35th anniversary dolls.
