Pardon me while I just do the bare minimum to exist right now, but I'm at that stage where things are just piling up and I can't work up the fucks to give. I'm not sure why, though I do feel a change coming. Maybe because it's finally starting to feel like summer's lessening her stranglehold on us. Maybe it's simply because I'm going to try and drag myself out of this feeling of meh.
I guess we'll see if that works.
Anyway. As I avoid any real thoughts, let's look at something I stumbled across this morning:
In celebration of American Girl’s 35th anniversary, designer Carly Cushnie reimagined the looks for the brand’s original six historical characters. Carly appreciates American Girl’s mission to inspire and empower girls with courage, kindness, and strength of character. Carly chose Girls Who Code as the beneficiary of this auction as they seek to close the gender gap in technology.
If you're curious as to the bids/want to see them they're up for 2 more days.
If you just want to see pics/read the descriptions, I've got you covered.
We begin with Samantha for no other reason than I'm working my way backwards from the other window I have open. :p

Carly was inspired by Samantha’s kind heart, generous nature, and small rebellious streak. She showcased Samantha’s sense of fun with pretty, printed florals and gave her a chic, uptown look that says she is ready to step in and help make a difference!
About the outfit:
Ivory stretch jersey blouse with sheer organza exaggerated puff sleeve
Floral printed sequin bias cut skirt
Soooo Sam is probably my favorite overall look, between the doll/hair/outfit. I don't love her shoes and wish they didn't have the toe thing because while it would absolutely work on a person, on the dolls it simply doesn't. I also liked this 100% more when I thought it was a dress and that the blouse was a jacket. I will say that if I were a gazillionaire, I'd take a moment from spending my money on good things and buy Sam. But I'm not so... I'm just going to sit back and watch to see how high she'll go.
Josefina!

In homage to Josefina’s traditional outfit that met the daily demands on the rancho, Carly created this red, floral print jumpsuit—with just enough ruffle and flare—to be worn to any modern-day fandango!
About the outfit:
Red and white floral jumpsuit with ruffle at bodice and flared pant leg
As far as outfits go, it's actually pretty snazzy. Those shoes do it no favors, but would probably be fine in a different color. Thing is, I see this and I see it on a kid or a doll meant to look like a kid, and my brain automatically adds those stupid ruffles on the legs and then I start screaming and just keep screaming until my head explodes. It's not you, it's me, outfit. I will say I don't look at this outfit and see Josefina. Like at all. But I feel that way for most of these so she's in fine company there.
Addy!

Carly was inspired by Addy's love of family and her treasured patchwork quilt. With a nod to Addy’s original pink dress, Carly recreated a diamond pattern and modern silhouette, that flares and flows, to reflect Addy’s new life in freedom.
About the outfit:
Shades of pink stretch cotton dress with diamond patchwork bodice and flared skirt
So Addy wins the outfit lotto, no questions. I want that dress and I want it in every color and I want it nowwwwwwwwww. But I also fully agree with Cass that the hair is tragic. This is the doll version of the bowl cut and it's just... no. Like I get the look they were going for, I think, but it doesn't work on dolls without something else. Either a little longer, a little shorter, a little something. She feels unfinished.
But seriously. I want that dress.
Felicity!

Carly was inspired by Felicity's independent streak and love of nature. Just as Felicity wanted her horse Penny to be free (and to leave the corsets at home!), Carly created this free-flowing, floral-inspired look that lets a girl like Felicity feel the breeze in her hair—and park the “stays” on the side.
About the outfit:
Pink and purple floral dress with ruffles at the skirt and bodice lacing detail
Ivory flower crown
Mmmkay. I don't see Felicity anywhere in this outfit. Like at all. Maybe the lacing detail but that's about it. Annnnnnnnnnnnnnd those goddamn pompoms will forever ruin the shoes. Forever! The dress is pretty but I don't get Lyssie vibes. Woe.
Molly!

Carly was inspired by Molly's love of performance and busy life on the home front. This modern-day look reflects Molly’s patriotic spirit, can-do attitude, and desire to move freely on any stage! Care to tap dance, anyone?
About the outfit:
Color block ponte jersey jumpsuit in blue and white with a touch of red
With ruffle shoulder detail and gold buttons
Molly is one of the only ones I look at and go yup, Molly. I do wish they'd actually given her glasses and not just sunglasses because FFS, she needs them to see. It's such a pain in the ass to get a character that legit needs glasses and wears them that every single time their doll form loses their glasses for ~fashion~ I want to burn the place down. That said, a modern Molly would absolutely get contacts the absolute second she was allowed to do so.
But she'd also be wearing something exceptionally feminine so, y'know, it's a wash.
Kirsten!

Carly was inspired by Kirsten's Swedish heritage and pioneer spirit. Carly gave Kirsten a touch of home with this traditional gingham pattern but in a fresh silhouette and color as blue as the Minnesota sky!
About the outfit:
Blue and white gingham flared dress with exaggerated puff sleeve
Fedora hat with matching gingham ribbon
This is one of those cases where I'm torn between my love of a color and a character's love for a different color I like less. Like Kirsten is canonically the pink lover in the AG lineup and yet every time she's given a chance to be re-imagined or given a new outfit, they fail to pink her up. But I love me some blue gingham so... I do think the sleeves should be a smidge shorter and we're just going to ignore the fedora of it all.
You can definitely tell when the news of these dolls hit FB/fandom because this morning most were sitting at around $300-ish, but two hours later Sam was over a thousand bucks. Yeah, this fandom makes me feel exceptionally poor sometimes.
Lesse. What else. Oh, the winter holiday dolls dropped but we'll talk about them tomorrow (I mean, you're free to run to the site and look and drop $250 on each if you like), and the World By Us stuff has leaked but it's officially being debuted this evening on Facebook and then should be for sale tomorrow so we'll wait on that as well. Ditto the holiday celebration outfits where I might have to break into my "in case of emergencies" fund.
Now. To go back to doing very little while feeling grumpy.
I guess we'll see if that works.

Date: 2021-09-24 11:27 am (UTC)I think the auctions got put up early so they yanked them as I put Sam on my watch list and people on the boards were mentioning that they'd just gone up hours after I first saw them. Sooooooo... guess someone jumped the gun? In a surprising turn of events, Molly is now the one with a bid over a thousand bucks.
