A little late since I was a fool and didn't expect AG to be all "look, new line, buy noooowwwwwww, eat dinner laaaaaaaaaater."
:P
We begin with Makena because she's the new mold and also um, the first one to show up.

Makena Doll // $110
Item#HCJ67
Makena Williams has a passion for fashion, and clothes are a way for her to connect with others. But when Makena experiences racial injustice in her own neighborhood, she decides to post more than her OOTD (outfit of the day)—she figures out how to use fashion to speak up about injustice. Her set includes:
An 18" Makena™ doll with brown eyes and medium-length dark-brown textured hair that comes in a twisted style
A pleated skirt with a pink-and-purple ombre print and a glittery elastic waistband
A black graphic tee with the saying “See me, hear me, know me”
Three golden butterfly barrettes
A pair of pink shoes
Makena’s See Me, Hear Me, Know Me book that includes ideas for addressing racism, real girl profiles, and reader questions
I remain on the fence with Makena. I suspect that she's one that will look infinitely better not in AG's stock photos and I'll probably try and buy her, money permitting, simply because I'm attempting a go at each mold aside from the boys. I still don't love the skirt, though I do't know why since I love the colors. Her shoes remain a crime against fashion and I must take a moment to lament the decline of AG's shoe game.
Sigh. Anyway, I have a sneaky suspicion that like Marie Grace, Makena (I keep typing it Makeyna since that's how it's pronounced but it's annoying) is one who will look better customized at least a little. Hell, you take away MG's muttonchops and suddenly people were in love so...

Makena's Accessories // $35
Item#HCJ70
Makena loves fashion, and it shows not just in the outfits she puts together, but in her original sketches inspired by her imagination, her friends, and her African heritage. This set includes:
A black moto jacket with golden butterflies and gemstones on the front
A purple patterned purse with a shoulder strap and a front flap
A notebook with a cover that says “We Rise by Lifting Others” that Makena uses for her fashion sketches
Might as well get this out of the way. I am going to assume that the price for the accessories is because they partnered with actual designers for this line as well as prices everywhere going through the goddamn roof. But that does not mean I did not take one look at the price and wince like I'd just walked down a hallway made of LEGOs. This is essentially $35 for a jacket and sweet baby Jesus that hurts. On the other hand, I do like that jacket. So maybe if there's a rewards sale or something.

Makena's Pink Puffer and Joggers Outfit // $40
Item#HJB84
Casual outfit. Serious style. Harlem’s Fashion Row designer Nichole Lynel elevated Makena’s shine with this sparkly outfit that’s perfect for showing her personality. The set includes:
A sparkly pink sequined puffer jacket with a zip front and contrast hem on the sleeves
A pink knit tank top to layer underneath
A pair of pink velour jogger-style sweatpants with contrasting dark-pink sparkle patch pockets
A pink knit hat with a butterfly on the front
A pair of white slip-on tennis shoes with sparkle finish
Ah. We've now cycled back to the early 2000s fashions. Oh, this is gonna be painful, isn't it? Oof. That said, right up until oh, 30 seconds ago, every time I saw this outfit I would twitch because it was so not my thing but somehow seeing that they went all in and went for the velour pants makes me like it just a teensy bit. WTF, self.
The outfits, btw, are on preorder and the current date is 2/24/22, but isn't likely to be any earlier.
Those shoes, though. Makena, for a fashionista, your shoes are TERRIBLE. These are recycled terrible, even!

Makena's Flutter Trim Outfit // $40
Item#HJB83
When Makena strikes a pose in this OOTD—outfit of the day—her passion for fashion comes through loud and clear! Harlem’s Fashion Row designer Nichole Lynel created this fluttery look that includes:
A pink knit tank top with a ruffled hem
A denim jacket with front pockets, a button front, and three glitter patches—a heart, a star, and a butterfly
A denim skirt with a bright pink mesh ruffle on the hem, and three multicolored glitter patches
Pink sparkle boots with lace-up fronts and black soles
REDEMPTION. For the shoes. The rest of this outfit is definitely not helping when people say Makena looks off-brand. I get that a lot of people are getting That's So Raven vibes from this and I think the kid version they showed in the fashion show was cute enough but this? Yeah. Not me. Want the shoes, can live without the rest, especially given the price.

Maritza Doll // $110
Item#HCJ69
Maritza Ochoa is Bolivian on her mother’s side and Mexican on her father’s side—and 100% American soccer player. This girl’s got goals, including helping families who have immigrated to the US stay together. Her set includes:
An 18" Maritza™ doll with brown eyes and long dark-brown wavy hair with red highlights
A sporty pink knit tank top with mesh at the neckline
A pair of black leggings with color blocks, perfect for a 5K or soccer practice
A pair of colorblock tennis shoes
Maritza’s Lead with Your Heart book that includes tips for advocating for others, real girl profiles, and reader questions
Still my favorite by far, though there are some IRL pics floating around that make me question this. Like Josefina, the WBU dolls (at least Makena and Maritza) have eyebrows that lend themselves to looking too sparse and it gets real weird, real quick. This isn't helped by the painted on lashes. HOWEVER, I'm still holding out hope that Maritza is going to be glorious in person. I also actually really like her Meet Outfit aside from the shoes. Which aren't Makena levels of bad, just not my fave.

Maritza's Accessories // $35
Item#HCJ72
Maritza’s big dream is to play for the U.S. National Soccer team, so she’s always on the go to practice and games. She’s ready for any activity with this set that includes:
A transparent vinyl hooded jacket with multicolored taping on the seams
A watercolor-print belt bag with gold accents
A colorblock water bottle with gold accents that Maritza refills at the community center’s water bottle refill station
If I must choose between Makena's accessories and Maritza's, the leather jacket is gonna win every time. That said, I do like that Maritza's seem to really tie her outfit together. That water bottle is way too small. Why is AG's scale always off? *muse*

Maritza's Neon Stripe Outfit // $36
Item#HJB87
Racing stripes are the perfect detail for Maritza’s “need for speed” personality. In this outfit created by Harlem’s Fashion Row designer Kristian Lorén, she can be a standout star on the soccer field, at The Community Center, or at school. It includes:
A blue mesh cropped mock turtleneck top with long raglan sleeves, a mock drawstring tie, and contrast neon-green detail on the arms
A pair of mesh pants with contrasting neon-green detail and patch pockets on the legs
A pair of white tennis shoes with neon highlighter soles
I like the colors. I like the shoes. The less said about the rest the better.

Maritza's Camo Combo Outfit // $38
Item#HJB88
Maritza’s take-action attitude and unique sense of style will never blend into the background in this camo-couture outfit created by Harlem’s Fashion Row designer Kristian Lorén. It includes:
A multi-fabric blue top with color-blocked and neon-green-tape details
A camo-print skirt with patch pocket details
A pair of blue spandex bike shorts with an elastic waist to layer under the skirt
A pair of athletic slide shoes with green soles and camo-print tops
...no.

Evette Doll // $110
Item #HCJ68
Evette Peeters is a nature lover who is full of crafty ideas for reusing and upcycling clothes. But Evette never thought borrowing clothes from Gran E’s closet would uncover a family secret—or that her work to clean up the polluted river in her town might be a way to heal the rift in her family too. Her set includes:
An 18" Evette™ doll with gray eyes, freckles, and curly caramel-colored hair that comes in a half-up style
A floral-print dress with crocheted lace at the sleeves
A black belt with a golden buckle
A pair of fun floral-print boots
Evette’s The River and Me book that includes a Meet the Author essay about growing up biracial, tips for taking care of the Earth, and reader questions
SONOFABI... I watched the FB live thing they did last night and walked away with a couple of thoughts. One, kids are fantastically delightful in small, controlled doses. Two, the designers loving their dolls/characters and the fact that you could practically see the hearteyes? Yeah, that's awesome. Three, I uh, kinda fell for Evie here, too. Hence the swearing. I'm not sure if it's the model they used for one of the outfits in the fashion show who looked to be a dead ringer for the doll, or if it's simply because her designer seemed to speak to me (at least through her fashion choices) or what, but uh, yeah. Here we are. I still get serious white girl vibes from her... but it's lessened considerably when she's with the others.

Evette's Accessories // $35
Item#HCJ71
Evette loves thrift shopping and upcycled fashion, and she’s always on the lookout for something a little special, like the items in this set:
A collarless cropped striped denim jacket with floral embroidery on the front
A faux-suede crossbody purse with bumblebee embroidery on the front flap and tassels
A pair of retro-inspired cat-eye sunglasses with ombre lenses
That bee is too cute. I don't really love the accessories, but I'll be damned if that bee doesn't get me. This is one of those where the look isn't for me, but I appreciate it all the same.

Evette's Chill Twill and Tie-Dye Outfit // $40
Item#HJB85
Harlem’s Fashion Row designer Samantha Black created this relaxed and stylish outfit for Evette—a look that’s simply to “dye” for from head to toe and perfect for proving her passion for helping the planet. It includes:
A knit tee with a blue tie-dye print and contrast binding at the neck and sleeves
An asymmetrical skirt with a wide yoke and a full pleated bottom
A bucket-style hat with a tie-dye print at the top and contrast detail on the brim
A pair of brown boots with yellow lace-up fronts
I hate the hat. I hate it with the fire of a thousand suns. But I love the skirt with the same intensity. I love the shirt as well, even if I'm not sure how much I like them together. Doesn't matter. This is the one outfit from this line I actually want. I might change my mind in the future, but right now I love it and I can't articulate why.

Evette's Floral Duster and Denim Outfit // $38
Item#HJB86
Evette is always searching for fashion finds with a vintage flair that no one else will be wearing. Harlem’s Fashion Row designer Samantha Black took that inspiration and created the perfect outfit that includes:
A long, drapey duster with an allover flower print, an open front, and elastic at the wrists
A knit tank top with contrast pink binding and a Peace & Love graphic on the front
A pair of two-tone denim shorts
A pair of turquoise tennis shoes with elastic laces and white soles
I waffle on this. On the one hand, it's like if you threw Claudia's and Dawn's fashion sense into a blender. This is what you would get. And I love it. At the same time, I'm not sure how often I would reach for it for a doll to wear, y'know? *muse* I do love that it feels like she'd be right at home with Julie and Ivy, though.

Mini Fridge and Snacks Set // $50
Item#HCJ76
When Makena, Evette, and Maritza are lounging around the Riverfront Community Center making plans and decorating posters, they can get hungry! There are plenty of snacks in this set that includes:
A bright-orange mini fridge with an American Girl® star logo on the front, two interior shelves, and a shelf on the door to hold drinks
Four canned drinks to keep the girls refreshed while they work
A green apple to snack on
A container of strawberries that fits in the fridge
A package of string cheese that fits in the fridge
A pretend woven basket that fits on top of the fridge to hold fruit or other snacks
A bunch of bananas that fit in the basket
Two bags of popcorn
A sticker sheet to decorate the fridge
Woo, doll sized mini fridge! Boo, I could buy a regular mini fridge for that price, or close to it. :P Sorry, my commentary is going to be light as I'm literally falling asleep here. Not because I don't care about the whole WBU line, but because someone's been staying up too late this week. Wonder who. Points are awarded, however, for it being orange.

The Community Center // $125
Item#HCJ73
Makena, Evette, and Maritza are excited to have the brand-new Riverfront Community Center to use as their home base. Located in Anacostia Park near the river, it has a food pantry, an art exhibit space, and a lounge where they can hang out, get creative, and put their plans into action. The set includes:
A vibrant, multicolored wall structure with 360-degree play options. It includes a desk with two drawers on one side, five lockers and four cubbies on the opposite side, and a water bottle refill station on the side of the structure
A pretend orange desk lamp with a pencil holder
A pretend tablet with a separate keyboard that also acts as a cover and a reversible screen that can be inserted in the tablet
A colorful lined notebook and a diary notebook with art printed on each of the interior pages
A translucent plastic “peace hand” photo holder designed to hold one of a set of five photos
A geometric-shaped desktop plant terrarium
Three-dimensional butterfly stickers designed to attach to the chalkboard wall
A sticker sheet of colorful stickers and posters with inspirational messages, designed to attach to the chalkboard wall and lockers
A reusable black water bottle that fits into the water dispenser to cut down on disposable bottles
A mini Smart Girl’s Guide™ book
There's a lot of color here but mostly I'm just over here sighing happily over the lockers. I won't buy this, as I haven't the money or the space, but my god, the lockers speak to me.

Community Center Table and Chairs // $100
Item#HCJ74
Riverfront Community Center is a gathering space for Makena, Evette, and Maritza to talk about the causes they are committed to and put their plans into action. This set serves as their creative command central and includes:
A printed zebrawood table used for crafting and making buttons and posters
A yellow metal chair with printed art on the seat
A pink metal chair with printed art on the seat
A supply holder that can fit pens, scissors, hot glue gun, and more
A set of four different colored marker pens
A set of three different colored pretend art pencils
A pair of pretend scissors for craft projects
A faux hot glue gun the dolls can hold or that can stand alone on the table
A set of three pretend hot glue sticks that fit into the glue gun
A large pad of poster board with premade art on the first three pages
A set of different-colored construction paper sheets
A sticker sheet set with a variety of stickers to use on the poster board or construction paper
Six silver-colored buttons with clips on the back to attach them to the dolls’ clothes or bags
A set of stickers designed to attach to the button tops to spread awareness about the girls’ causes
They're charging $100 for a table, two chairs, and a fake hot glue gun. Right, sounds like AG. Someone complained that there weren't three chairs, but ma'am, where you gonna put a third chair? Besides, how else are they gonna sell you this...

The Community Center Accessory Set // $100
Item#HCJ75
Makena, Evette, and Maritza get comfy when they’re hanging out and making plans at the community center with this set that includes:
A couch with reversible cushions—a dark solid rose on one side and colorful print on the other—that fits two dolls
A reversible fabric rug with a colorful woven pattern on one side and a black-and-white pattern on the other
A large floor lamp with a faceted globe that has an iridescent finish and really lights up
A turquoise reversible furry plush square pillow
A reversible heart-shaped sequin pillow
The plastic couch for your dolls to sit on. Two do the work at the table and the other sits on the most uncomfy couch in AG history! I know, I know, the couch cushion isn't plastic, which I really did worry they'd done. But it's still very thin and not particularly comfortable to look at. I do like that it's reversible, which probably is why it's so thin. I like the heart pillow and wish to see this lamp lit up properly. Erm, saw the lamp in one of their videos. It is unimpressive.
Overall, this isn't the line I hoped for, but my wallet is most grateful for that. I'm going to try and snag the dolls and Evette's outfit(s?) but the rest isn't really my thing. I do want to read the books, so we'll see how long it takes me to cave on that.
Tomorrow we'll circle back around and pick up the other new things that appeared this week, but I wasn't kidding about falling asleep.

In an out of character move for me, I actually really love Maritza's camo combo outfit. Maybe because it looks like surfing wear or something. I definitely love the colors. Not the shoes though. I've not gone that crazy. If I was keeping her sporty, I'd get it.
I'm with you in the Evette camp. I kinda want her now, too. I love her whole meet look and the accessories, too. I have an odd thing for embroidered cardigans, which this is not, but it looks like it is. Weird. From the rest of her stuff, I only like the floral duster piece, so it'd be doll only and possibly pass on the accessories if I got her. I want to see that hair in real pics.
Gah, now you've got me worried about Maritza. She'd better not look bad or I'll be upset.

Date: 2021-09-24 11:12 pm (UTC)I'd like the camo outfit more without the skirt (and the skirt is probably fine with another shirt) but my brain keeps replaying the fashion show where the kid puts her hand, awkwardly, in the pocket and it's mesh and g'ah. I do like the blues and greens they used for her outfits and the hair styling on this one is definitely a win.
I'm trying to keep half an eye on IG for pics of the new dolls. Maritza had a few right off the bat that looked... wonky, but they weren't the best angles (right up the dolly nose is not a great look for anyone) but I've also seen others that look really gorgeous, so I'm hoping it's just that the display dolls maybe look a bit wonky or the first couple to hit online look weird but the rest will be gorgeous.
