Some people do Christmas villages. Mom and I have (had?) a few pieces running around. Some people do Halloween villages. I've considered such things. But they're usually ceramic or something similar and are on the spendy side. To be fair, there's a lot of sculpting to be done and there's lights and animated bits and it can be a lot of fun...

But my broke ass fell into the Hyde & Eek Mini Mantle line back in 2019 and my little town has basically been growing ever since. It's much easier to store (they're fairly flat pieces of wood) and again, MUCH cheaper. I think I bought this year's entire selection for less than one Spooky Town Village building. But it wasn't until recently that I thought to look and see what they've actually put out over the years. In my head, it's mostly bright orange and black, with bits of bright white and pops of purple or green, with a lot of haunted houses and dead trees with silver moons.

Annnnnnnd that's not wrong. But I'd forgotten that the first year had more color and that 2020 basically tried to cram EVERY theme into one while 2022 had a very small collection, but they did make it count.

So. Let's peruse together. I shall be your guide, obviously. I don't think I'll be veering off into the Fairy Garden stuff they did for a couple of years, though future!me may point out the stuff that came out in both the wooden and little fairy garden plastic pieces.

We're gonna do a quick year overview with a little closer look at the stuff that isn't going to be compared with offerings from other years, then swing around and talk about the comps, k? If you want more detail on anything that isn't the misc comparisons, clicky.

2019:
Year one brought us two haunted houses, a haunted mansion, and a fair number of pieces I forgot existed. :P Like that pumpkin house! And the purple haunted house! I didn't fully forget the neon characters but I definitely forgot they were year one.

Gonna spoil things, but these two pieces won't be part of the comparison section, so let's admire them here, shall we?

I full on forgot the pumpkin house like I already mentioned. It doesn't feel finished to me, but does that mean I wouldn't buy it now if I found it for a decent price? No. The movie theater is probably my favorite big piece of Year One. You can't really tell here, but it's tall (ish) and hefty. While I don't think the ghost works as well in the pumpkin house, I think he's absolutely killing it in the theater.

Overall, I think it's a pretty good start to the line. Each of the smaller sets had a lot of pieces and the larger buildings had a fair amount of detail, all things considered.

2020:
Year Two and Target went insane. We've got castles, pirates, and a carnival all in the same year. Why didn't they space things out? Hell, each theme would have been AMAZING if they'd devoted more time/pieces to it, but even with the split attention, they still managed to make an impression. I do kick myself for not getting any of the pirates stuff but choices had to be made and I went carnival and medieval times. :P Keep in mind this year also had the fairy garden stuff so my funds were spread very thin.

image host
So let's look at them a little closer, shall we? The pirate ship is just fab, though I'm not sure how easy it is to fit into a proper village. Love the waves and how the JOL seems to glow. The castle is a fav piece of mine though I do think it should've been bigger because it's a friggin' castle. The Ferris wheel actually had a candy dispenser counterpart that actually moved in the non-mini mantle line. It was $50 and super popular. I love the ghost at the top because he is just having the best time EVER. ♥ I really like the pop of teal on the fun house and just how clean it looks, so you can set your own scene. I really do wish they'd revisited each of these themes and added more in later years. Still can, Target.

This is definitely their most ambitious year and I think it actually really worked out because you had a little something for everyone. You had the traditional stuff from the year before (or the more streamlined versions) and some classics (that witch, the ghosts) and then you could go in different directions depending on your interests. If you wanted cutesy characters, you were in luck but if you wanted a little more gruesome, the skellies also had you covered.

2021:
Year Three got a little... weirdly disjointed? It seems more brightly colored, what with the purple witch's house and the candy shop, not to mention the parade and even the new witch. It definitely leans into the whimsy, with the new ghost and the ghost chasing the skelly on the clocktower, as well as Mr. Bones and his bowtie. I really, really loved some of these pieces when they came out but I also really didn't like others.

image host
The potions/witch house is so fun, though the smoke is a little... odd? I love the pop of purple and the little fence around the house. Little Teenage Witch goes really well with what I consider her house. She also looks snazzy with the Candy Shop and its poisonous green smoke cloud. I love the little black ghost in the window! The clocktower has one big strike against it: it's not tall enough. It feels like it should be much taller than it actually is, but scale for this series is all over the place. I want to say this is as tall as the movie theater which is just weird.

image host
2022:
Year Four scaled way, way back. I'm not sure if they re-released anything (maybe the cemetery gate from the previous year?) but the new stuff is very small. But it's also kind of snazzy and I'm not sure why I skipped the stuff I did. Possibly it sold out on me. They definitely turned the town over to the skellies because aside from the cat at the coffin club and some ghosts, there's no one else in town.

image host
I love the skelly concert and the Coffin Club amuses me. The I Scream Shop is so friggin' adorable and it fits in perfectly with the idea of a Halloween village, y'know? So it's a little bit classic while the other two biggies are less so, but still fun. This is definitely the year of whimsy.

2023:
Year Five feels like an entirely different designer was at the helm, although the ghosts do kind of tie things back to previous years. The colors are more subdued but the characters look cuter than their previous versions, cats not included. Cats got more realistic instead.

I did just get my box of this year's stuff and the big pieces are all much lighter than I anticipated. In weight, not colors, that is.

image host
I love the ghost waving from the barn, as well as the little spider. The Candy Shoppe and I are having words because mine arrived pretty much destroyed, but I do love the window display. The previous candy shop is better, but if you changed the sign on the building, you could make this a different store and add to the budding business district in another way.

Let's get to the part that prompted the whole thing, shall we? Comparing similar items across the years.

image host
Haunted Houses:
2019 starts with the unusual choice to have two nearly identical houses, with the colors and decorations (lack of cat and inclusion of big ol' spider) being the only difference. There's also the haunted mansion with the same ghost, oooh, ahh. We'll repeat the regular orange and black house for 2020. In 2021, we change ghosts (downgrade for me personally)/swap cats (I love them both) and get a new JOL. It's the same house though, so if you like the idea of it just being decorated differently for a new year/new owner, that's a nice little nod. But if you wanted a new-new house to add to the display, it's a little bit of a let down.
I'll be honest and say I don't remember/know if 2022 carried anything over from previous years but if it did, it wasn't obvious. So the new house this year? Is actually new. New design and while it's still got similar elements, it's not the same house design. WOO.

I prefer the original black and orange house, but had the purple house had a cat, I'd love that one most. If I were to rank them, and I absolutely am, I'd probably give the mansion an honorable mention since I don't fully consider it to be a haunted house, then go with 2019/2020's house, this year's house, the purple house, and then 21's weird little ghosty dude. If I could slap 21's cat on 19's purple house, that'd be my winner. But I can't. I mean, technically I could if I bought them both but that's not happening anytime soon.
Also, should we be playing count the moons?

Cemetery Gate:
It shouldn't come as a surprise that one most reused themes here is a cemetery gate; after all, when you think Halloween at some point a cemetery scene will likely cross your mind.

2019 is a good solid start. The ghosts are cute and that cat from the house is racing by.
I actually prefer the 2020 version to the degree that I keep thinking it's the one I own, but I don't. I own the original. Anyway, look at those ghosts! they're so cute, but not the same way the other ghosts are cute. I do like how they reuse the same characters/poses across various pieces, though it is a little odd when you've got them all set up together. But it's Halloween, dammit, you're gonna have similar looks. Or so I tell myself.
'21 gives us bowtie skellies at the gates annnnnnnnd it's not my fave. He's fine, but I think I prefer him with the tombstones/tree set. And truly we were robbed of a scene of these guys 'sunning' themselves atop the haunted mansion/house roof like the cat house has. :P If you told me '22 recycled the gate, I'd believe you, and I want to say that happened but I don't know and after awhile I had to stop and call it a day.
I like that in 23 we get flaaaaaaaaaaames and the gate itself has changed. Like the Haunted Houses, previous gates are essentially the same, it's just the creatures that change. Not so this year. Totally different build. I will say that this year's feels and looks flimsier in person, and the actual gate is gonna need serious protection in the off season.

Ranking wise, probably : 2020/2019/2021/2023, simply because this year's feels so damn flimsy and I know damn well 21's gate could knock a person for a loop with the heft. :P

Trick or Treaters:
I won't say you can't have a Halloween town without trick or treaters (TOTs) because lord knows I do seem to try, but it wouldn't make sense for the company to not at least offer the option. And yet looking at things year by year... TOTs seem to be a little scarce on the ground.
2019 definitely went with regular TOTs: a kid dressed up as a witch that is absolutely horrifying, a cute skelly, an adorable black cat, and a pumpkin with hair. I dig the JOLs as well, though you can get them in another set, or at least very close to it.
If you're feeling generous, you could probably do what I do and consider the witch and ghost set with the black cat and JOL duo the TOT set for 2020. Truth be told, I think I wound up with every set she was in this year, so I have one trick or treating usually and the little fairy garden one in the cemetery raising the dead.
2021 has one lone little ghost TOT with the street sign set and 2022 sat the TOTs out entirely.
This year we get a bit of a rehash of costumes but they're done differently. 2019's set was more realistic and these are more like cute monsters out gathering candy. Skelly in a wheelchair, pumpkinhead, little ghost, and another green witch who is more similar to 19's witch than 20's.
In terms of actual TOTs, I think this year's crop is my favorite but I do love 21's solo ghost and 20's lil witch and pals.

I'm kind of torn on how to divvy the next two batches up, because some straddle the line between extra characters and basically just being the tree/tombstone set for the year. So many trees with moons. SO MANY. Anyway.

Village People: (I had to):
And this is where we'll drop most of the other people in town, shall we?
2019 brings us the redhaired witch I think of as Tori. Twice. She's in the graveyard set as well as the the JOL trio set. We also have the Neon Brights couple that go with nothing else in town aside from the purple Haunted house. Maaaaaaaaaybe they could go with the pumpkin house? In any case, they're fab, why don't I own them? I'm putting them here because I always think of the neon characters more than the neon tombstones.

2020 brings us the most variety, of course. We've got the dragon/knight/princess set as well as the pirates because why wouldn't you do these themes in the same year instead of spreading things out a little. There's the carnival set with my favorite ghost, just having the absolute time of his little life as well as li'l witchypoo.
2021 throws us a random parade but also gives us another style of witch for your sassy teen/young adult witch needs. I wound up including her here and not the tree section only because '21 was light on the characters because they put 'em all in the parade. Which, btw, matches NOTHING else they've done before or since. I should note that Sassy Witch's tree and 22's green tree are the same design, just different colors.
22 decided the town needed nothing but skellies and is the only year without a witch of some sort. I wish I'd grabbed the skellies eating icecream around town but I think I thought I'd find them in store and never did.
This year's I'm cheating and showing in both sections because I dunno where the fuck they're more accurate. I don't think of this set as a tree set, I think of it as the skellie set, but I do think of the ghosts as the characters for the year. You can make the choice for yourself. :p

It's a reach to say there's a throughline for this section, honestly, but I do love how cuckoo bananas things look when you show them all together. As such, I can't really rate them either. I love Tori!Witch a lot, but 2020's ghostie is adorable and I love him so damn much.

Trees and Spooky Shit:
You can't set the scene without some spooky trees and your cemetery gate might like some tombstones, y'know?

2019 gives us some options, dammit. You've got the neon tombstones in the neon set (which, incidentally has the only tree with a face on the trunk itself) or you've got Tori Witch in her spooky graveyard and you bet your ass this is the set I bought. If you're not into the tombstones, you can get your ghost and JOL on with the owl tree.
In 2020 we essentially recycle the previous two sets but jettison some of the extras. Tori and her cat get dropped from that set while the ghost duo has lost the more traditional ghost and the yellow JOL. Sidenote, but the trees are basically the same, it's just a matter of what's in/on them.
21 brings back the owl tree but gives us the goofy ghost (sorry, bud) and two new JOLs as well.

22 gives me a pumpkin tree and the Lived. Laughed. Loved. tombstone that I still love more than is probably healthy. :P This is a very, very simple set but it's the little things in it that set it apart.

This year we've got the weirdly hand-like tree that is a new design but feels somehow less intricate than the previous tree. Love the cat, though. The ghost set is adorable and the tree there is also new. Lots of bats, not just one, and nary a moon to be found in this particular dead tree.

For the fluffier trees, I'm giving the win to 2022's pumpkin/JOL tree and it's also winning the tombstone war because I still chuckle at the LLL. :P My least favorite, by far, is 21's goofy ghost set. I *really* didn't like his design and that's the downside of them reusing elements throughout the year's pieces- if you don't like one, you're gonna be doomed for multiple sets some years.

And there you have it. Did anyone ask for it? No. But sometimes once I have an idea, I either have to see it through or lose my damn mind.

Thank you for the comparison! I love stuff like this - it's more effort than I am willing to go to in my own home, but I love seeing others decorate with Halloween decor!

I wonder if Target went all out in 2020 due to the pandemic (no trick or treating that year, I don't think, and really - what else were people going to do?). The 2021 "Well, now what?" is pretty on brand for the theme of the rest of that year, too.
