Oi, being right isn't always fun

Soooooooo... finally got around to watching Season 2 of Our Flag Means Death this weekend. I knew nothing about it going in aside from one headline that wasn't necessarily spoilery but sometimes, deep in your gut, you just KNOW.
So I dragged my feet because based on that one headline, I fucking knew deep in my soul they were gonna kill Izzy. And uh, if you clicked on that spoiler thing and just got spoiled, that's on you. Because they absolutely did. :/ I'm glad I got him for the season and that they had him change and grow and still be Izzy at his core, but it hurt just as much as I thought it would and sometimes you're just not ready for that kind of pain. Still didn't properly plan my time as it's been two years and a day without my Ozma fluff but here we are.
For the show, I have mixed emotions on the second season as a whole. I think it suffered from losing two episodes, as they introduced a fair number of new characters and the cast was already pretty large to begin with, even as they did cull it a bit. I do not understand why shows decide that they need to keep adding a large number of characters when they get renewed for a new season. Have we learned nothing from the bloat that is the Stranger Things cast?
To be fair, I didn't hate any of the new additions and I think they did a decent job of incorporating them into the story, but they really, really could've used those two episodes to flesh things out and maybe give characters aside from Stede and Ed time to really, really shine. Jim and Olu in particular got the short end of the narrative stick, as they broke them up and paired each of them up with a new partner and both of these 'ships failed in different ways. Jim/Archie is fine, whatever, but I couldn't tell you a fucking thing about Archie other than she's there and she's loud. Zheng Yi Sao definitely got far more characterization (and is my favorite newbie), but her 'ship with Olu hinged on one scene and we didn't get time to let their time apart mean anything.
The constant whiplash from the Stede/Ed stuff is only acceptable because they made it very clear that they're both very prone to immediately following any given whim.
Not sure why any of the pirate ships would've kept the clocks of doom from the minor prince (seriously, you're telling me none of them ditched them ASAP?) but show's gotta show. Calypso's Birthday was probably my favorite ep, and it's where Mums told me to stop when I paused for the night because of my fears that Izzy was doomed. I do love that after the scene where Izzy's telling Stede better men have died and yet Stede's still here and it baffles him as to how this could be, Mums looks at me and says, "it's you." She knew before I even told her. I am predictable, tis true.
Basically, please give me S3 and give me more Olu and Jim. Bring Buttons back. You don't need to artificially inflate the cast- use the one you've got now. They're fab!
I do very much appreciate the ending being what it was just in case the curse of HBO kicks in.
