Jun. 5th, 2024 09:06 amDecided to pay for AMC+ to watch Interview as it airs. This was perhaps a mistake, but only in that AMC+ is the glitchiest motherfucking app I've ever tried to watch anything on. It won't load at ALL on my TV, so I have to go through the Comcast Flex box and if you don't have the stars align JUST RIGHT, it'll error you for hours. It's so fucking glitchy that despite the fact that it's going through the Comcast box and their refresh signal thing worked, the CS agent was like, "yeah, next time you should contact them."
Which is... weird since one of the troubleshooting things is specifically for AMC+. I assume this is because I chose to subscribe (for the two or so months this is gonna take, really) through AMC+ itself and not through Comcast but still.
New Interview season isn't bad and if you've heard anything about Dreamstat stealing the show (or at least co-stealing along with Daniel), the rumors are true. To the degree that I sent a gif from either ep 3 or 4 to Cass and she FINALLY agreed to watch.
Since I finally caught up (after 12 hours of error message hell), I decided to give The Mayfair Witches a chance.
It's been *checks* a long, long time since I read any of the Mayfair books, although I do remember loving The Witching Hour to the point that I remember more about reading that one than I do the events from the other two books. To be fair, that's because TWH happened to coincide with the last summer in the house I grew up in and going downtown to meet a guy I really shouldn't have, simply for the waste of time. But he was memorable.
Anyway. I remember Rowan being the icy blonde doctor. I remember there's a fair amount of sex in all the books and unfortunately that also included massively underage Mona. I remember Lasher... and some other stuff, but mostly it's a blur of memories that could come back to life if the conditions are right. I figured that in order to give the show the best chance possible, I would not re-read any of the books beforehand.
I... uh... How to put this. They're clearly banking HARD on having the Immortal Universe BE A THING, as that's the first thing you see when you fire up the show. For all the changes Interview has done and is doing (and will likely do in the future?), their casting has been phenomenal. Older!Claudias might not be book!Claudia but they still feel like a variation of the character. Sam Reid's out here making people think Lestat has actually managed to come to life and I actually give a shit about Louis and Armand. It's a freakin' miracle!
That same magic did not translate to the sister show. It's possible things will change as I'm only two episodes in, but based on everything I've read, it's not likely. Given how big a deal Lasher is, I was not expecting the styling choices they've made concerning him. Like.... I just cannot take this dude seriously. I don't think it's a case of the actor being bad, just poor choices made otherwise. Did teen!me just assume Lasher was supposed to be exceptionally good looking and adult!me didn't question this because, well, that would involve re-reading the books? I'm not gonna say Tv!Lasher isn't a fine looking dude but he does not match what I had in my head... at all. And not even in the "well, Louis is also very, very different but it works" way.
The actress playing Rowan does some weird blinking and looks like she's doing the absolute most to make her eyes look even bigger to the point that it's distracting as hell. Maybe it'll be something she shakes as the series goes on, but again, I've read things that make me worry.
I also do not understand why this thing has a color filter put over it to such a distracting degree. WHY. I get that you want moody and a certain color palette but also, maybe dial it back several notches because it's maddening.
Has anyone watched it? Does it get better?
Seriously though, as soon as Interview is done, I'm cancelling because dealing with that app is hell.
