*pokes work* I do not understand you. Like, at all. I get that Debby isn't a normal storm for us, but the flooding aspect is something work's dealt with before, and last time they were smart enough to throw in the towel and call it. Not this time, noooooooooo. No, this time I had to wait til 8:30 and then call out, pissed that this is gonna use my PTO for something I had no control over, particularly since I have the sneaky suspicion that two factors combined to fuck me over... and there's also the worry about what I'm gonna do for Wednesday night if flooding is still an issue and work still isn't taking it seriously. :/
Let's discuss the flooding first, shall we? I've been lucky in that our street hasn't flooded when I've been looking but the pond definitely has flooded and since the water keeps coming, it's gonna be an ongoing issue. I do not like how the city officials have basically been treating it like the Historic District gets all the attention and the rest of us are kinda left to fend for ourselves while they're holed up under curfew (extended until 7am Wednesday morning) even though there are chunks of WA (the various parts of the city I've lived in over the years) that are either flood prone (the kind where the insurance people laugh at you) or are straight up on their way to flooding. But who the fuck cares, right.
When I was giving work a final 15 minutes to smarten up, I read the flash flood warning thing and realized the only part of WA that gets name-checked in the flood areas is right down the road from me. It makes sense since that creek is also what makes the insurance people laugh at you section flood, though most of that is found on the alternate route to work for me, but crossing that creek is part of my daily commute and that little area does flood like crazy. As do other parts of 61 that aren't well lit so it's not like you'd be able to tell you were fucked until you'd already committed. Those areas also have trees that might not like soggy ground so, again, not safe.
And lest one point out that the flooding might not be so bad, Cass sent me video of someone using a jetski in the mall parking lot.
*dons conspiracy cap* But I'm wondering if the curfew is what's fucking me over. I'm too lazy to look up how many stores we have downtown, but I do know it's at least a handful, and at least one is craaaaaazy fucking busy. You can't convince me at least one of them (maybe the same one) isn't also crazy busy due to pharmacy and being downtown with all the hospitals. So if they're all effectively closed and have been for a couple of days (because I'm not sure work could get away with convincing their workers that they are eSsEnTiAl and worth risking fucking over their cars in flood waters), I can see corporate not wanting to close my store, even overnight, because they want any potential business they might be losing from the other stores. ESPECIALLY since two, the magic number they need to keep the store open, employees are close enough to walk to work.
Nevermind the fact that the sewage treatment plant on the island has been flooded out so those very waters are very much extra fucking gross and I would not want to risk that literal shit.
I'm trying to figure out how busy the store could be, all things considered since even if it's not likely to be flooded (though pharmacy might have that waterfall in the ceiling), certain roads around it are on the list of washed out/closed roads. I know a good chunk of our third party shoppers come from downtown shoppers, so those would be out, and so would most of the ones that require you going THROUGH downtown, which is another fair bit. *muse*
Currently it's looking like it's supposed to make landfall tonight, right before I should be going to work. Please be smart enough to call it, work, especially if it's no longer heading for Myrtle Beach and is instead much closer to us. Please, work?
On the plus side, it looks like once it hits land again, it's gonna go flying on its way, so NC should get too much additional wtf from this.
