I am never going to time the Target in store Halloween shopping ideal experience. This year I managed better than last year, I think, but it was still very picked over and yeah. I'm not sure what was going on there, either, though probably truck came and they might've been shorthanded? Dunno. It was a goddamn mess and I was stressed just walking any of the non-toy aisles. (Those were well stocked and the person putting stuff up was just in her own little world.) I learned that if I'm gonna get groceries from Target, I'm just gonna order them for pickup because oof, that was just...why? I mean, it was probably between trucks and with everyone panic buying last week for the strike, so a mess was bound to happen but also DAMN.

This year Target's featherly friends (their bird range) were still very much available, which hasn't happened in like, five years, and definitely not since COVID. I'm not sure if they made more to try and combat the scalping issue or if everyone looked at the weird faces some idiot gave them and even the scalpers said "fuck no." Mom saw them and sped right on by.

The Halloween sections were a mess. Home decor was pretty picked over, though there were still the birds and some random bits and the less realistic skellies. They also had some of the big props up on display still. The costumes were maybe half gone but still enough to make walking by a bit of a chore for someone not interested in them. Lots of candy to the point that they'd just shoved the cases of candy in front of endstands and called it good. (Part of why I assumed it was truck day.) I was good and didn't buy anything, though they did have some cute plastic cauldron drink/snack holders that I kinda wish I'd gone back for.

Our cashier was nice enough but Jesus fuck she went out of her way to bag horribly. Who in their right goddamn mind puts chicken in with bread, oranges, and greeting cards? There's not giving a fuck and actively choosing to be bad at part of your job. o_O Ma'am, you literally were just about to destroy something I hadn't even paid for yet. Wtf.

Ummm, what else? Oh. Holo Taco's doing a big birthday LE (semi LE?) release this weekend. They're doing birthstones and if I'm able, I'll include the promo pic they emailed. And because it's HT and because people are getting weird about how other people collect or comment on their collecting, there's been some shit.

We'll look into the polishes first. Tada, maybe:

I think the colors are pretty, though I don't agree with the stones they chose for certain months. If we turn it sideways, it's easier to guess/assume the months/stones used:

See? They kinda go in rows. July's throwing things off a little but eh.

We've got an obvious multi or duochrome for Garnet, Amethyst looks like maybe a glitter or crushed holo, Aquamarine looks maybe like a linear holo? Diamond is a bit harder as I can't imagine it's a straight glitter or linear holo since they've got both of those already in their catalog. Emerald's too blue leaning but is still pretty. I'm picky with my emerald greens, dammit. I'm hoping it's just not quite right color wise in this shot because, y'know, crappy gif is gonna crappy but other colors look amazing sooooooo. Anyway, maybe glitter? We're guessing formulas here because this is a mixed finish collection and I 100% do not believe anyone saying they're ALL different formulas. Just not possible. No. Right? Right.
June there is going Alexandrite and it's probably my second least favorite thus far. I want to like it, but I'm getting reflective glitter vibes here. Then we've got July's ruby who is beautiful and I love her despite not being a red polish wearer much. Peridot is actually really pretty but holy shit did HT fuck up by retiring their polishes prior to brat summer. :P Not a linear holo (that was Full Charge and they axed it) but maybe a shimmer? The sapphire blue is STUNNING and I love it. I want it to be a glitter, too.
Hate they went pink tourmaline for October. I wonder if Cristine prefers that stone to opal or if she just decided opal would be easily replicated with things they already had and people would skip or it wouldn't be worth doing? They don't have a ton of pinks so I get it makes sense from that standpoint but also OPAL, DAMMIT. Um, glitter or maybe frosted metal? Citrine is probably my least favorite color of the bunch but they seemed to have nailed it so I'm also impressed? Looking holo glittery though I feel like there's something else going on. December's tanzanite is pretty. Obviously a shimmer-something mix.

Overall, for what it is (a birthstone collection), I think it pretty solidly nails it. No pun intended. I wouldn't have made all the same stone choices and I'd still like emerald to be tweaked, but I get it. I'm glad they made garnet and ruby obviously different so you couldn't mix them up if you tried. So. As a birthstone collection? Love it. I want it.

I totally get people pointing out that most of these have a very close dupe (not in finish but color) in the HT lineup already. That's very much an issue HT has in general, btw.

The real problem is that these are Limited Edition. Sorta. The plan is to bring back the most ~popular~ shades at some point, but as it is, they're being sold and marketed as LE. And people are behaving about as well as you'd expect for that, honestly. Which is to say it's headache inducing on all vocal sides.

You've got Side A pointing out that these being LE and such a big (and expensive, even with the discount if you bundle) collection, KNOWING there are people who collect every polish or at least try to (or even just every LE polish) is a bit of a dick move. Factor in the fact that their birthday LE launch sold out ASAP and uh, yeah. I get why people are miffed.

Side B's like "bitch, no one's holding a gun to your head and making you buy and of course a company's gonna want to make money and they're not going to cater to your exact whims and preferences!" Which, y'know, is fair but also maybe don't be such a goddamn dick about it, Janets. Especially annoying are those who either brag about it not being a financial issue for them affording it or putting down those for whom it is (worse still is when they pretend they care about Side A making bad financial decisions) and that it's just nail polish. Duh, of course it's just nail polish. But Side B is frequently filled with people who realize that for a lot of the community, the polishes are what's helping keep Side A from losing their goddamn minds in the midst of all the crap in the world.

As always, there are layers to the craziness, but those are the basics.

I'm somewhere in the middle. Side A's right: this release is leaning HEAVY on the FOMO marketing and I just cannot with the Side B people pretending it's not. Literally says in the marketing email that not all the shades will come back and on the heels of the last LE collection selling out in a surprising amount of time, yeah, Side A has reason to be vexed.
Side B is right that Side A is OTT for a lot of things and that yes, it's just a hobby and shouldn't be stressful, but it's the way they say it every time. Let people be upset. Your advice of just scrolling by applies to reading Side A's comments too. Side B is also filled with people who have been bitching a LOT about how other people choose to collect over the last couple of months but in the past were leading the charge against companies for: releasing too many releases back to back (to back), companies, particularly HT, leaning heavy on the FOMO marketing. Normally I'd think it's different people but I recognize some of the names; these are literally the same people.

That said, I also recognize some of the same people trauma dumping in the comments about how unfair life is and yeah, I'd imagine reading that on pretty much every new release pic would drive one bonkers.

I think anyone who bought the fall collection knowing this was in the pipeline (and a good chunk of the polish community knew; she's been dropping hints and outright said as much on more than one occasion) and is now complaining they don't have the funds brought it on themselves. The fall collection was not LE and did not have a LE box to collect BECAUSE this collection was coming. HT said as much. Y'all were warned. I skipped fall because I knew I'd at least want the option of seeing the birthday collection to see if I wanted it first and I liked at least half of the fall collection so it wasn't a case of skipping something I hated being easy.

Basically I want to know what's in the water in the polish community because JFC, they're being assholes to one another. Sigh.

But this is not a new thing? People are super hateful on social media for basically no reason, but there's always been drama llamas of every stripe in the polish community, especially indie polishes. That's a big reason why I have steered clear, LOL!!
