I definitely recommend storage with shelves or drawers of some sort. Helmers work for me - even the new ones, which incidentally, I like the one I bought last year better than the one I've had for donkey's years; it was easier to put together, at least to me - but the best thing about them is that you can just pull out the drawers instead of going fishing.
I arrange my collection by brand > number (for cores) > LE collection. I like remembering how, when, and where I got certain polishes and keeping them as their original collections helps with that immensely. But of course, to each their own!
You have more perseverance than I do. I definitely would've given up after the initial win in the storage wars. I haven't even swatched all of my polishes yet (I desperately need to get back to that).
