For me, for BSC, it was more "well obviously everyone agrees that the characters are really like this, etc" and its like, well there is quite a bit of latitude to interpret the characters and their relationships with their families, friends, etc. It seems to be a very small slice of recent fandom, which obviously does not include me or you.
Obviously, the new TV series sparked interest again, and though it was not something I was interested in, I'm tickled that the books are being re-released - and that they are the original books from 30/40 years ago, instead of being updated to match the current times. And considering they were written with callbacks to Ann's own childhood in the 50s, they are even more "outdated," if you will, but there is something very timeless about them anyway. Especially the early canon - the characters are unique and realistic, even if they all look the same.
I gave up on AG myself after the first 5? dolls (I think Addy is the last one I remember from childhood) but it has been interesting watching from the sidelines from your perspective what's going on. I'm probably far enough removed that it wouldn't affect me either way, especially if it is an academic study instead of a more pop-culture one. (How the promise of Paperback Crush was squandered!)
Mr B sends many meows to you and yours. Right now he's keeping a very close eye on a chipmunk AND a lizard, so his days and nights are very full LOL.
