impyI'm currently reading The Jasmine Moon Murder which is set in Charleston. I'm reading it mostly because my mother pretty much begged me to. Well, as much as you can beg someone to read a book, anyway. Because it's set in Charleston, I keep expecting to go all, "aha!" to certain places. I haven't really. Perhaps because 90% of it so far has been set downtown and I hate going dowtown [tourists, the homeless who hug you and try to sweet talk you out of not food, drink, or money, but your discman, and the fact that everything is overpriced to compensate for the fact that they pay a fortune to be in the "historic" district. ugh. gag me with a ye olde southern spoon]... Still, what's the point of reading a book set in your city if you can't "aha!" at things?
Exactly. No point at all. Also, I don't know if the author is local, lived her awhile, or just imagines Southern men to talk funny, but at least one of her characters jolts me out of the story anytime he speaks. Having dealt with the police on a few occasions now, I can honestly say they don't tend to talk like that, sweetie pie. :p I talk funny, I freely admit this, and I also don't know all the funny Charleston-centric words and phrases, but dude... There is a line, and sometimes crossing it works. I'm not thinking so for this guy. *muse*
Laaaaaa. I also find it highly amusing that whenever you read books or stories set here, no one freakin' mentions the places people actually live. :p
So tired. My feet hurt. I'm about to go pass out. I ponder if I'll get any mail today. I wish I would. Non-bill mail, that is. Which reminds me. Gotta pay Knology.
