All Good things.. *snort*
May. 15th, 2003 02:30 am So I watched the DC finale. Partly because I hadn't heard that Andie was cut [you fucking bastards. The only reason I suffered through the horrible parts was for the hope of Andie. But noooooo] and partly because I remember when I really liked the show. Enough to get flamed to hell and back for standing up for Dawson during S3 [which pretty much meant that I came back from the dead, there was that much venom/fire thrown at the D fans. Oi] anyway.
I'm in the minority on this, and I know. I like JvdB. I like Dawson. Do I want to stalk them or create endless fiction surrounding them? No. But since I left once they mangled his character to Hades and back, I probably missed the formative years of loathing. Anyway thought I'd warn you about the like'ums that'll sway my vote. However, I don't dislike KH, JJ, or KS. [luv MW] So to be clear, I don't like: Pacey/Joey fanatics. From what little I dared to read [after awhile your eyes bleed] they are an annoying lot, whom I'm sure have wonderful exceptions. But they, as a group, seem to believe in kicking other fans when they're down, and being meaner than hell to fans of certain characters, even when there's no reason to do so. Whatever.
That said, let's move on.
The Good:
- Dawson/JvdB did not come off as a child trying to play grownup. While he really got shafted in the love story [as did the D/J fans], he didn't really whine this episode, he got his dream [not involving skankaJoey], and basically was..um, there? Yeah. I wish there'd been some more Jen/Dawson fluff, but what can you do?
-Jen/MW also did not come across as a child playing grownup. She was quieter, more subdued, and had some decent hair. She proved that she is perhaps one of the only ones to evolve and grow, and what's she get for it? The most fitting death scene. Think about it. Killing the other three would have alienated those 'shippers and the rapid fans of whomever died. Not to say Jen didn't have hers too, but she had this "Finally. You all revolve around me" scene stealing way that worked. Hell, I've mercilessly mocked the show for the last 3 years, but watched because I still gave a damn about her. While I wish she'd lived, she did get to have a semi meaningful death.
-Jack. While he alternated between semi grownup and still same ol' Jack, he's lovable. His scenes with Jen broke my evil little heart, and I've always had a soft spot for the more outsidery ones on the show.
- The end. For all their "lifetime commitment choice!" the end kinda gives you the feeling that Pacey's just filling space on Joey's couch.
The Bad:
- Joey/KH: From the first scene you see her til the end, she seems like a kid playing dressup. The way she holds the glasses to the way she speaks as she's reminiscing, it all smacks of WRONG.
- Joey's choice. What do you know? 5 years later and she's still running. I honestly don't really care one way or another [except to spite some foul people I've come across] who she chose, but the mere fact that she picked anyone is annoying. The girl has run from relationship to relationship, all without ever seeming to comprehend that doing that is a really good way of breaking other people and yourself. But hey, why let that get you down? :p Plus, dividing your fandom and screwing one side over is never brilliant when you've just begun syndication AND merchandising again. Foolish.
- The cutting of Andie's scenes. I'm an evil banshee when it comes to this. Put it on the DVD however, and I'll buy it.
Overall:
I liked the flashbacks between scenes, the musical choices, and overall the episode wasn't bad. However, if you're going to skip 5 years into the future, make sure your actors [even the pretty ones] can hold their own. *rolls eyes*
