"Let me get this straight. After all these years of us helping them out, now they're planning a revolt over some demon we didn't even know was trying to get our attention? How exactly is that fair?" Paige said later when Phoebe had finally explained her crying fit.
"They're scared, Paige. And they do have a point. I mean, if this guy wants us, then why is he bothering with killing other witches? It's not fair for them either," Piper pointed out.
Phoebe whistled softly. "Wow, you're being awfully understanding, all things considered."
Piper glanced quizzically at her little sister. "What's that supposed to mean, Feebs?"
"Yeah, spill," Paige added, sensing pre-Paige gossip.
Phoebe squirmed in her chair. She'd forgotten that no one had told Piper exactly what had happened the day Prue died. Phoebe had kept quiet out of guilt, and Leo had kept quiet because Phoebe had begged him to. At the time Piper was so overcome by grief that she couldn't really think properly and question Phoebe and Leo, but now... Now she'd ask questions. 'Why can't I just keep my mouth shut?' she wondered.
  "Phoebe?" Paige asked.
"One of the nuttier witches in the area shot Piper once. That's all," Phoebe blurted out. Great job. No one will think to ask any questions now she thought sarcastically.
"What?" Piper and Paige yelped in unison.
"The day Prue died, Piper was shot by some local nutjob, who is probably still out there, by the way. That's why time was reset, why Cole was dodging so many bounty hunters..."
Paige almost asked, So where were you? when she realized that the answer would be very simple. With Cole. She had been with Cole. Paige had learned very early on that if Phoebe was acting flightier than usual, a man [usually Cole] was to blame.
Piper blinked a few times and then let the subject drop. "Okay, so, your premonition. You saw the demon that did this?"
"Sort of. Only he was kind of hard to see. I think he was blocking himself from me though. Somehow."
"So, wait, he knew you were there and wanted you to see his little blood bath, but didn't want you to see him?" Paige asked.
"Sounds about right. Maybe he's in the book after all and didn't want us to find the vanquish so fast?"
Piper shook her head. "I don't think so. We've been over that book a million times, Phoebe. Between the three of us, I think we have it memorized by now. I don't remember any demon that can do all the things this guy can. Besides, he knew your name. He was talking to you. Plus that message. This one's personal. So you're right, he doesn't want to completely blow his cover, but he's not in the book."
"Great," Paige said slowly. "This just keeps getting better and better. Maybe we should call Chris?"
  "Good idea."

------

"Well, that was a waste," Piper sighed as she watched Chris orb away. As usual, the Elders were useless. She wasn't sure why, but she'd kind of hoped that when Leo became an Elder that they'd become more helpful. That obviously hadn't happened.
"Tell me again why we even have a whitelighter?" Phoebe grumbled.
"Wanna try that again?" Paige said, giving Phoebe a particularly nasty look.
"Sorry, sorry. It just seems kind of...useless sometimes. Except when we need healing," she conceded.
  "Sometimes, yeah," Paige agreed.
"I guess we have to find some of the other local witches. Maybe they can help us," Piper decided.
Phoebe shrugged, but Paige immediately perked up. "Really? We haven't done a lot of that-"
"Are you kidding? We did that all the time," Phoebe started to say before realizing that she was entering the awkward Prue zone, again.
"When Prue was alive," Paige finished for her.
"Yeah. I don't know why we stopped," Piper cut in, hoping to avoid hurting Paige's feelings, as well as to curb her desire to slap Phoebe. Ever since she'd started dating Jason seriously again, she'd gotten infinitely more inconsiderate.
  "The Source," Phoebe offered.
"Mermaids, leprechauns, nymphs, and Titans, oh my," Paige added.
Piper couldn't keep herself from smirking. "That would do it. This actually seems to be something they might know about though. It can't really hurt anymore than secluding ourselves from them has, right?"
Before anyone could think of something to say to that, Phoebe's phone rang. Ignoring a dirty look from Paige, Phoebe answered. "Hello? Jason!" she cooed into the mouthpiece. "How are you? Yeah, I know." She babbled on for a few minutes, completely oblivious to the amused and annoyed looks her sisters were exchanging.
Paige rolled her eyes skyward, causing Piper to snicker softly.
"I'll go check on the baby," Piper mouthed when Phoebe began whining about how long it had been since she and Jason had been out on a real date.
"Traitor," Paige muttered, not happy to be left with superhappyshinyPhoebe.
"Oh, I know. Lunch? Now? I don't know... I know!" Phoebe giggled in what Paige could only assume was supposed to be a flirtatious manner. It sounded more like Phoebe was choking, but if that's what turned Jason on...
"Well, I promised my sisters we'd... Yeah, I guess I could. Thing is... Oh really?"
Paige knew exactly where this was going and really didn't like it. She began trying to get Phoebe's attention. "Phoebe? Phoebe, we need to go."
"Work? Oh, work. I get it. That could work. Mmm hmm," she giggled again, ignoring Paige.
"That's it," Paige muttered before grabbing Phoebe's phone away from her. "Jason? Yeah, Phoebe can't make it. See she's got to help me with something a little more important than you two going at it in your office. Maybe next time. Bye!" She hung up, turned the phone off, and slipped the phone into her pocket.
"Paige! Why did you do that?"
Paige stared in disbelief at her sister. "Are you kidding me? Something scarier than the source of all freakin' evil is trying to kill us, and taking out giant groups of innocents in the meantime, and you're trying to set up a date to go fool around with your boyfriend. Do you think I'm deaf or just plain stupid?" she demanded.
  "What are you talking about?"
"I was sitting right here, Phoebe. I could hear your entire conversation, even as you two were planning your excuse that you had to 'work.' Sitting right next to you!"
"But I thought you'd understand. I mean, what with all those times I've covered for you-"
  "Excuse me?"
"All those guys you've been seeing," Phoebe said as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
"What guys? I haven't been out on a date in months. You're the one always out, even when you've promised to do something else. God!"
"Whoa! What the hell is going on here?" Piper called from the doorway. "You're yelling loud enough to wake the dead, or at least Wyatt. You mind telling me why?"
"She started it," Phoebe and Paige muttered in unison.
"Well at least you guys agree on something," Piper said, rolling her eyes. "Phoebe, what did Jason say? Do they need you at work or something?"
Phoebe's eyes lit up, but before she could say anything, Paige pinched her. "Ow!"
"NO," Paige snapped. "She just wants to see Jason. That's what we were fighting about."
Piper stared at Phoebe. "What part of 'we're doing research to avoid being killed by a big bad demon today' did you miss?"
"It's just that you guys don't really need me for this," Phoebe said, unable to keep from whining a bit.
"Yes. We do. You can see your boyfriend some other time," Piper said flatly.
"Why? Why do you need me? Paige is like super witch, and you've gotten pretty close lately," Phoebe pointed out. "Besides, we'll beat this thing. We always do."
  Piper winced. "Not always."
"Phoebe, we're strongest together. What if this thing attacks us? Or you? Do you really want that to happen?" Phoebe still didn't look totally convinced, so Paige tried another tact. "If attacks while we're separated, it could kill Jason or even Wyatt. You don't want that. I know that. Come on."
Phoebe nodded. "You're right. I'm sorry. I don't know what got into me."
"Good. Now, get ready. We're hitting that Occult shop we used to go to awhile ago."
Paige took off for her room, unable to shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of some serious trouble.
"Paige! Gimme back my phone!" Phoebe called up the stairs after her.
"Not until after we leave!" Paige sighed. Sometimes she really missed being an only child.
