I rant! Therefor I am sleepy
Aug. 10th, 2011 10:50 am*yawns til her jaw nearly unhinges* Pretty, I know. A thought before I grab my bags and magazine and head to bed for a bit. With the new AG dolls (squee!) having appeared for pre-order, some have asked why people would be buying Cecile before Addy. To which I take a moment to hold my head in my hands and wonder if logic is truly dead.
Background:
People are forever bemoaning how awful it is that Addy (and any other non-white AG doll) does not sell well. Addy's been listed as the worst seller quite a few times. Many a reason has been thought up* and discussed at length. A big part of the reason people were so jazzed about the idea of Cecile is that she was another take on black history. Huzzah!
Thing is, no matter what you do for Addy now, precedent clearly shows that her days are numbered. Be it this year, next, or the year after, she will be archived. Nothing you do will save her.
Now we've got a new decidedly not white AG and the best way to show the company that you're interested in this being a thing with them is to, you know, buy the damn product for fuck's sake.
There are other reasons to buy Cecile (she's AWESOME for one), but for a lot of people of the adult persuasion, this is a big reason. And it really shouldn't take much explanation to get the point across.
I put my money where my mouth is, be it my collection or someone else's.
* She's black. People do not like the mold. People are racist, intentionally or otherwise. AG' s photography is abysmal, really. She's never featured in the catalogs or online. People are all "PC is better!" and do not realize that if everyone's Addy comes from ebay, then Mattel still ain't making money off the doll, so she's still not selling or popular in their eyes. Also, her hair scares the shit out of people.
I've been invited to a birthday celebration that will partially take place in the DC store next month. I'm dorkishly excited to see my friends and to hit AG because I'm an addict. Also, I'm told Ikea is on our planned trip. Ikea! I've never been. Now I have to hope the trip does not fall through.
