A few random thoughts on Thor. Background: I like mythology, but my Norse is a little rusty. I like comics, but when in the Marvel pool, I'm totally an X-Men fandom girl and as such I have little room in my heart for the others. That said, I wanted to see Thor something awful last year but everyone (and I do mean EVERYONE) went to see it without me. Even the people who don't see movies right off the bat saw it. I might be the last person on earth to see it.
After seeing The Avengers, Ari tells me I need to see Captain America and possibly Thor, but she wasn't all that fond of Thor cuz it was boring. (So... no Loki for you?) We agreed that really, no need to see either Hulk movie... and there I left it. I originally planned to watch X-Men: First Class, return it, and get Thor. Yeaaaaaaaaaah. That didn't work. I eventually caved and bought Thor from Amazon, but the online version because I needed something to distract me right then. (baby piggles!)
So my expectations were a little all over the place. On the one hand, it looked so awesome and until Ari said anything, I hadn't heard anything bad about the movie. On the other hand, what if I wanted to see it TOO much? Some movies falter under such pressure!
I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. I think some of the Asgardian shininess was a liiiiiiiiittle over the top, but I do wonder if this is one of those things that would look better on a movie screen or possibly the huge ass TV downstairs? Some things don't translate well, y'know? All that sparkle in one small space...
I'm a sucker for the all too human elements of villains, so Loki's jealousy of Thor? Yes, please. Thor's being a jackass and getting his ass banished? Sure, why not. Play your brother like a fiddle, Loki! And I possibly mean that in a dirty way, too. I'm not really sure, but I'm sure someone else out there would take it that way anyway, sooooooooo.
I think we'd already caught on to the Darcy love, but really that wasn't a surprise since I love Kat Dennings.
I was pleasantly surprised to not hate Jane considering I have a serious problem with Natalie Portman in almost every movie she does. I want to like her, I do, but in a lot of her movies she comes across as exceptionally cold and is rarely in a role that would call for it. In fact, I think I sat through three back-to-back films she did around the same time and every single one called for some warmth or charm and instead we get... yeah. (I tend to have the same problem with Ashley Judd and again, it's me wanting to like and it not happening.) But she was flustered and the bit of chill around the edges worked. * I gather this isn't the popular feeling given the amount of Jane hate I've seen spewed from many a corner. Which is weird because I'm sitting here like, "Dude! She wasn't bad!" which is a rare feeling for me.
A lot of the hate seems to come from the pro-Sif corner. I can squint and see Sif having a thing for Thor (again, I reiterate we are going on movies only) given some of the looks thrown around in the movie, but the Sif/Loki thing I... do not get. At all. Even a little. And I'm pretty good about seeing something after it's pointed out to me, even if I personally do not agree. I tried! I went back and mentally re-evaluated scenes that might point this way and my brain still comes up confused.
Anyway. Overall, I enjoyed the hell out of the movie and I wasn't nearly in my right frame of mind. That said, I did have a wee bit of an issue in that the movie seemed to want to be a couple of different things. And I was okay with any and all directions chosen.
For instance, Thor & Loki (and friends!) having grand adventures across the nine realms? Hell, yes. I'd watch this movie. Twisted family drama involving poor choices by Odin? Well, they kind of already did that, but again, yes. God out of water flick wherein Darcy and Thor steal the show? Yessssssss. Loki loses his damn mind? Mmmhmm. If anything, Jane's part was kind of lacking when you consider she was one of the Names. Like... she hits him with her car, she's rather adorable when you consider she's played by Natalie Portman, and they kiss and Loki totally steals Thor away which may or may not have been Loki's plan all along.
Seriously though, I want the Thor, Loki, and Friends! movie. So much fun would be had. Is it just me?
Also, I may or may not have squished a million packs of these:

Grabzags
to find the figures. And then I bought them. I wanted Loki, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Thor. I found 8 packs I was reasonably sure were little figures and not the disc launchers or skateboards. First one I opened? Black Widow. :D Second? Thor! Third? Nick Fury. Who is adorable in is pissedoffness. Then I bought the rest because it was time for my ass to go home. (I was at work.) Annnnnnnd I suffered through Hulk and cutesy Iron Man, and then Hawkeye! And then Captain America who is listed as rare but dude? I'm pretty sure the box has everything/everyone in it, so you ain't rare. You are, however, adorable. Annnnnd of course Loki was last. Mums decided, after much deliberation, that Black Widow, Loki, Thor, and Cap were her favorites, with Hawkeye being #5. I decided it was for the best that she didn't choose Thor over Loki in order to move Hawkeye up the ladder of awesome or the house might get a liiiiiiittle uncomfortable.
I regret nothing. Of course.
Oh, and related to NOTHING else here: I noticed I lost a little weight. But where, oh where did this occur? My toes. ...seriously, of all the places...
