in which I put the wagon before the horse
May. 1st, 2013 07:20 amThe house hunt resumes! Mums and I toured the house in the neighborhood that might or might not accept our pets but is now no longer "no, no NO pets."
It's weird how quickly I can change my opinion on something as it unfolds. The house itself is quirky (and I don't mean this in the best way) color wise but that just means someone was really out to lunch when they chose the colors. Took forever to get the door open and you step inside and there's this room that appears to be exceptionally tiny when you first enter, so you're left wondering "living room? Dining room? Some other room entirely?" Beyond that I noticed some nifty-cute shelves near the doorway to the next room.
Next room has a non-working fireplace (I think) and was cuter the longer you looked. The kitchen, however, is the size of a postage stamp. I mean it. It's so small that it took me a good three minutes to figure out that if I couldn't see the light switch, it had to be hiding behind the fridge because there's no room in there. It also has a doorway that I originally thought lead to like, the dining room or something (and it's one of those split doors where you can just open the top) and yet no, that leads into the hallway. So... weird.
The hallway had a little alcove/nook for the telephone and the front bedroom had some shelves on the walls. The bathroom was small but nice and the house smelled an awful lot like the houses I used to visit when I was younger. So, uh, it smelled old. :P But in a good way?
Upon circling back to the front room, I realized that in addition to it being the only room with carpet, it also had a fabulous light fixture. Mums declared she'd take it as her room and everyone could just use the back door to enter the house.
Swing in the backyard and a fire pit thing too. It's a lovely house and possibly the very definition of charming in terms of real estate. But for the price they want, it's got too make strikes against it really for me. I'm not saying I would hate living there, but a tiny kitchen and no real place for the dogs... Which could be more easily worked around except the price is too high. That and one bathroom.
A shame. I really thought it was cute. We'll see. It also had the honor of being right next door to Widget's best friend so... he'd adore it. I do wonder how the utility bills are. If they were low enough, it might offset the rent.
