impy...Oi. There's a reason I avoid fandom of any flavor these days, and that's because my tastes skew young [dirty?] and inevitably I'll get sucked into a discussion/debate and within seconds I'll find a million words being abused, misused, and mostly unloved. And then I'll scream because I don't agree with the general consensus, or I do, but people are going about it in a most nutty sort of way.
Anyone else out there join me in the land of Gossip Girl love? When it comes to the books, I'm there for Blair [though she's insane, no doubt about that], Vanessa, and maybe early Dan, maybe not. I think Book!Serena is annoying and I frequently wish she'd die. I think Nate is an idiot and no matter how pretty he is, he's not worth the hassle. Oh! If I could remember Blair's step-brother's name, I love him, too. I love Jenny in her spin off, but in classic [if you can call it that] Gossip Girl, it depends on what stupidity she's drowning in at any given moment. Mostly I'm in awe of the way the early and later books eat my brain cells, all while I hope for the glory of the middle chunk.
Now, when it comes to the TV show, my opinions differ greatly, plus you have that fantastic added layer of bitchery when it comes to the actors and actresses. Now, in the general fandom/asylum, there's a very clear division. You're either Team Blair/Leighton or Team Serena/Blake. Occasionally you can cross these lines if you're Blair/Blake, Serena/Leighton, but mostly that doesn't happen and I only mentioned because I'm insane. Naturally, because these two teams cannot co-exist, there's much snippy commenting to the point that every single comm I'm in that isn't strictily for one or the other includes a "No Serena/Blair fights" kind of rule. Basically, sit down, shut up, and wipe that smirk off your face. Which works for me, I guess. But every so often I tire of this little game, so here I'll rant since it doesn't matter enough to hunt down people to engage in a debate I'd tire of after two minutes anyway.
For the record, I'm Blair with a leaning towards Leighton, but I don't tend to follow their off-stage antics. I think she's the far better actress, but maybe it's simply that she gets the good stuff to deal with while Blake is there to be super!happy. Also, poor Blake is buried under six tons of makeup and it makes her look kinda scary. While she'd never be my first choice for epic-beauty Serena, I actually like TV!Serena, so she's doing something right. [see my loathing for book!Serena] I think it's annoying that if you're going to find any given cast member on the cover of a magazine, it'll be Blake. It's not her fault, but her character is pretty dull and I've got a thing for the underdog who shouldn't be. [Holly? Clearly the best actress. Not given the love outside of fandom. Leighton? Makes a bitchy character relatable, understandable, someone you actually like. It's gotta be her, cuz heaven knows it ain't the writing...]
Anyway, it's funny to watch the two sides go round and round whenever they get half a second. On the other hand, you can watch your average GG fan turn on Jenny with one placed comment/picture. Funny!
On the other end of the spectrum, we have Thirteen Reasons Why, which you'll all go out and read. I started and finished yesterday, and it's not a terribly long book, but work frowns on you reading while "working" for some reason. Silly, I know. It's just as good as I thought it would be, and I should point out that I still have a giant pile of books I requested and got well before that book ever made it's way to my radar. Such was the pull, and may you be sucked in. It's easily the best book I've read all year. Also, how good does a book about a girl who commits suicide have to be if you're rooting for her to still be alive at the end, even though you know she can't be? That's right. That good.
I hope I never manage to chomp my tongue like this again because this is getting annoying. On the other hand, the really strong alcohol is totally helping things along. Woo. Thirsty now.
