grrr, argh
Sep. 10th, 2008 09:20 amFirst things first, shall we? Gossip Girl
Never Been Marcused is an... unusual title. I get what they're going for, but it doesn't work so well when you read it. Only when you say it. Which, I guess, is part of their evil plan. Get the people talking so they might actually get to watching. Sneaky.
I cannot see Madchen Amick without thinking, "That bitch Sherry." Which is weird because, y'know, as far as Gilmore Girls 'ships went, I was/am Luke/Lorelai all the way, so you'd think the monkey wrench that sank the Chris/Lorelai ship would be a good thing... And yet, no. So my brain has a little trouble computing, which is stupid since I'd seen her in things before and I've seen her in things since, and I don't dislike her. But my brain just gets overloaded with all these thoughts and I have to rewind the scene to see what I missed while pondering all this.
I kinda like Marcus, and I know that puts me in the minority. Doesn't it? I dunno. I like that he likes the abuse, and I like that I don't see him as a real threat to the Chuck/Blair thing, and I'm not sure I'd really like C/B as an actual couple. I think I may love their angst more than I'd like them together, as that could be an unholy union if ever there was one.
Surprisingly, my two favorite story threads involved Rufus and Vanessa.
If they try to write Rufus out again, even if it's just a momentary "gotcha!" thing, I'll kill someone. He's yummy in all the best ways. Plus, the show needs someone older than 20, and no, Catherine does not count. Besides, I can't stand Alison [his ex-wife on the show, not Al :p] and if they put him out on tour, I suspect I'd have to deal with her again and that is just not something I am prepared to do. Rufus is my one true GG-guy love, so you cannot take him from me. I will not allow it.
Vanessa was the actual surprise. See, I obviously love Rufus, so his thread wasn't an actual surprise in that I loved it, just that it was sadly the thing that made me sit up and say, "Do it and die, writers!" Vanessa has disappointed me in her transition from book to screen, and I doubt it has much to do with her actress. She's beautiful, she's charming, and I can accept Vanessa being these things, although she shouldn't truly be charming. Whatever. But when they put her in girlie get ups and there's yellow used as something sunshiney and happy, I want to scream because I love me some book V and she's not a part of this. Sigh.
So, where was I? Oh yeah, Vanessa. That last little scene, when she was waiting for Nate, whom we all knew wasn't going to show well before he even offered to meet up with her later, was so pretty, and so sad, even though you could see it coming a mile away.
I like that Catherine/Vanessa both do what neither Blair nor Serena could do, which was give depth to Nate. I had to wait a year, and it's still in the early stages, but he might be more than just pretty. Weird. Of course, one might argue that his family situation is helping to do that, and I'd argue that we had that last year, and the only times I see anything more than a very pretty boy with nothing to do [nothing against CC] is when he was with Chuck last year. It holds true for this year, the Chuck/Nate thing. But while last year's Vanessa thing didn't do much for me, I like that Nate obviously wants more than he'll get with Catherine, and he seems to see the opportunity he might have thrown away last May...
Normally I'm all for Dan/Serena, which is another reason GG fandom and I don't play so well* together, but I wasn't feeling it once Dan and Serena talked on the phone. He seems to want his distance, his space again, and she obviously doesn't. So when she pounces on him as he's leaving Blair's party, I... it felt like for a moment he was going to tell her they should just go their own ways again. So either someone was distracted during their scene, I'm reading way too much into things, or things shall get messy before long.
Mostly I liked the episode. Some things I could do without, but since nothing is coming to mind, I guess they weren't all that important.
For whatever reason, if you love Chuck/Blair, they don't seem to want you to love Dan/Serena, declaring the latter a complete waste of space. Why? The ships don't overlap in any way, so you should be glad that Dan isn't around to muck things up with C/B. Is it simply because S1 spent so much time on the D/S pairing that everything else was shoved to B-plots? Because while annoying, everything I've read points to C/B being the arc of the season this year, and if that doesn't make them happy, nothing will.
Whoever keeps using my computer and closing things can just go straight to hell, thank you very much.
Bah, Kennedy in my Buffy comic. BAH.
