The Summer Before
Apr. 9th, 2010 05:59 pmSo, I finished The Summer Before, which is the BSC prequel. Parts of it I loved (Mary Anne's surprise for Kristy), parts of it I could have done without (Claudia was actually really on the bitchy side), and I doubt how wise it was to end with essentially the first chapter of Kristy's Great Idea. I also wish they'd done more with Stacey as she didn't really seem to be as... present as the others. Which makes sense when you think about it. Any given Kristy, MA, or Claudia chapter would include the others at least a little. Stacey was off in her own little bubble for most of the book.
I must admit I was disappointed that Claud and Stacey didn't meet the way they were supposed to have. (Running into one another, each wearing an eerily similar outfit. I want to say one shouldered sweatshirt?)
I'm not really sure how well this will convince kids to pick up the BSC series, but it was worth the price I paid. No. I would not have paid full price for it. :P
According to TSB, Watson and Kristy's mother have only been dating since May. Seriously, they get engaged after dating for one summer? The hell? I thought they'd been dating longer than that. Granted, they don't get married for another year, but still.
I don't like the retcon with Laine and her bitchy attitude towards Stacey. I buy it, sort of, except it's been explained in just about EVERY book that deals with the disintegration of the Laine/Stacey friendship that Laine freaked out AFTER Stacey started acting differently. That their friendship didn't die until AFTER the diabetes kicked in and Stacey started getting 'special' treatment. TSB lays it out so that Stacey and Laine have broken up BEFORE.
Guys. 20 years is a little too long to go before deciding you can change things up. Especially when book #3, one you just re-released deals with the same damn storyline. :P
Apparently MA only started sitting the summer before the BSC formed. Funny, MA. You sure didn't mention that you were older than Mal before you were allowed to start babysitting...
Claud steals a guy from Janine and then spends the rest of the series making Janine look like the bad guy? Balls. Of. STEEL, Kishi.
