Book meme ganked from
she_who_dares:
1. Favourite childhood book?
I'm trying to think if I had a particular book I loved above all others as a child. I'm going to go with The Fairy Rebel by Lynne Reid Banks because it was so good that your brain would sort implode from the "no way!" of it all.
2. What are you reading right now?
The Tale of Castle Cottage by Susan Wittig Albert. Beatrix Potter does mysteries! Or something. There's talking animals, so really, what more are you needing to be knowing?
3. What books do you have on request at the library?
The newest Monster High book, Where There's A Wolf, There's A Way. And apparently it's there! Right now! Waiting for me!
4. Bad book habit?
I dog ear pages.
5. What do you currently have checked out at the library?
Mums did my last round of books, so I have the first two Monster High books and then she thought I'd like the other Lisi Harrison novels. I haven't had a chance to return them since her writing makes me want to spork myself in the eye.
6. Do you have an e-reader?
Nope. Everytime I think I might like one, I:
7. Do you prefer to read one book at a time, or several at once?
I can read several at once if only one of them is new.
8. Have your reading habits changed since starting a blog?
No. They have changed this year, however, but that has nothing to do with this.
9. Least favourite book you read this year (so far?)
Sweet Valley Confidential. By far. No chance of anything else topping it.
10. Favourite book you've read this year?
I haven't found the one thus far. I will say that the Kanani books are adorable, however. Simply adorable.
11. How often do you read out of your comfort zone?
Not sure what you consider my comfort zone so... inconclusive answer given.
12. What is your reading comfort zone?
Ahhh, here we go. Um, juvenile fiction from the 80's/90's and cozy mysteries, with a dash of supernaturally themed things thrown in for funsies.
13. Can you read on the bus?
I used to be able to, but I cannot read in the car for long anymore. I'm fine until I realize I've been reading and then bam, I start to feel ill. I guess it's good that I could read in a moving vehicle when I was younger and it was of more use.
14. Favourite place to read?
Comfy chair if possible. If not, my bed is a good substitute.
15. What is your policy on book lending?
Depends on the book. Some books I don't mind, others I will cut you if you touch. When I was younger I lent a lot of books out and some came back in pieces or dyed green so... yeah.
16. Do you ever dog-ear books?
We've discussed this already. Yes. Not always and not all books, and no, it's not necessarily a sign of how much I like the book either.
17. Do you ever write in the margins of your books?
Nope. Not that interesting, I guess?
18. Not even with text books?
Nope.
19. What is your favourite language to read in?
The one I can read. Duh.
20. What makes you love a book?
Depends. I love Sweet Valley because I not so secretly want to be invited over to bake cookies with Enid and Elizabeth and watch the Jessica theatrics up close and personal. I love the cozy mysteries I read because I want desperately to live wherever they take place, or hang out at whatever shop whomever owns (so long as I don't end up a victim)... I love a book that can make me feel something beyond incoherent rage at the missed opportunities.
21. What will inspire you to recommend a book?
If I laugh a lot, or cry, or I think someone will appreciate a book. If it messes with my head or is unexpected in some way.
22. Favourite genre?
Didn't we kind of cover this in comfort zone?
23. Genre you rarely read (but wish you did?)
Uh... I read what I want, so... if I wished I read it, I'd just read it...
24. Favourite biography?
*shrug*
25. Have you ever read a self-help book?
From cover to cover? No.
26. Favourite cookbook?
I NEED a copy of Learning to Cook with Marion Cunningham. It's the idiots guide to cooking. NEED.
27. Most inspirational book you've read this year (fiction or non-fiction)?
Umm... I'm currently lacking in inspirational works.
28. Favourite reading snack?
white cheddar popcorn. Yum.
29. Name a case in which hype ruined your reading experience.
Does SVC count? Because I knew going in it was going to suck, but I did have, what, ten or so years (more if you ignore SV:SY) of hope wrapped up in the idea of it.
30. How often do you agree with critics about a book?
I don't tend to read reviews until after I finish the book and even then it's only if I think there's something I missed or something so out of left field that needs to be discussed.
31. How do you feel about giving bad/negative reviews?
I feel bad about it to a certain degree, but just because I feel bad about it doesn't make the book any better.
32. If you could read in a foreign language, which language would you chose?
Japanese. That'd be fun, eh?
33. Most intimidating book you've ever read?
I... cannot think of one. I read too much fluff, obviously.
34. Most intimidating book you're too nervous to begin?
Uhh... again, I read fluff apparently and there's nothing to be nervous about there. I do admit that I refuse to read Jim Butcher's non Dresden series because I'm worried it'll suck and then Dresden will be ruined forever for me. But that doesn't really count.
35. Favourite Poet?
n/a
36. How many books do you usually have checked out of the library at any given time?
Um... 20-30? But that's between Mums and I, not counting Widget's books.
37. How often have you returned books to the library unread?
More and more frequently. :/ It drives me bonkers to do so, however.
38. Favourite fictional character?
It changes. I'm a Luna Lovegood fangirl hardcore though.
39. Favourite fictional villain?
Margo, the evil twin, even if Nora's the one who actually got things done.
40. Books I'm most likely to bring on vacation holiday?
Last vacation I brought along a Private novel and brought a Dresden book back with me.
41. The longest I've gone without reading.
I read all the time. I read cereal boxes when I run out of books. Pray the fate of the world never rests of my not reading something or we're all screwed.
42. Name a book that you could/would not finish.
Shivers: Terror in the South. It was one of those books where the author botched phrases left and right and the first couple of times you just chalked it up to a typo or something. And then you realized no, he really had no idea he was doing it wrong. No thank you.
43. What distracts you easily when you're reading?
Cats.
44. Favourite film adaptation of a novel?
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix because it took a book I could barely stand and made a good movie out of it. Not sure if it counts, but the first season of Gossip Girl is better than the books and Pretty Little Liars the TV series is better than the books and I liked the books to begin with.
45. Most disappointing film adaptation?
HP: PoA. Fuck this movie.
46. The most money I've ever spent in the bookstoreshop at one time?
Hundred and some change, probably. It might be higher but it hasn't been any time lately so...
47. How often do you skim a book before reading it?
Skim?
48. What would cause you to stop reading a book half-way through?
Mind numbing stupidity as the author trips over themselves with phrases and words that do not mean what you think they mean. Otherwise, I'm a masochist.
49. Do you like to keep your books organized?
Sort of. I like the organizing of them. And I love how they look when I'm done. And then I re-read books and add new ones and then it's time to re-do my hard work. And it's awesome. So make of that what you will.
50. Do you prefer to keep books or give them away once you've read them?
I'm a bit nutty but I prefer to keep them. If I've bought a book and read it and it's not painfully awfully (and sometimes even if it is), I want to keep it. Occasionally I snap out of it and realize it would be better homed with someone else. But this is rare. I grew up in a house with a library. I think that says it all.
51. Are there any books you've been avoiding?
Anything that falls under "classics" that I'm told I absolutely must read unless I've asked someone to recommend it.
52. Name a book that made you angry.
Flirt [LKH] Ms. Hamilton has Anita cross yet another line and again this proves to not bite her properly in the ass. After violating someone's free will and erasing it forever, someone comforts her because it's just so awful that she has to put up with this person. No. She made a choice and it wasn't even necessary. NYARGH. This and her rape of an entire species of weres and turning her back on another species because their leader's partner wanted them to remain faithful? G'ah!
53. A book you didn't expect to like but did?
House Rules by Jodi Picoult. Mums picked it up from the library thinking it might tide me over until I could go and pick out my own books (the library and I are on opposite schedules. They open as I prepare for sleep) and I remembered Cass going on and on and ON about the author... along with a million other people. So my expectations were low and damned if I didn't read the whole thing in an incredibly fast gulp.
54. A book that you expected to like but didn't?
Dragon Song by Anne McCaffrey. To be fair, I was... 12? And my mother devoured these books and after getting burned by another book on the recommended reading list for school, I thought "this has to be a trick. A real book, not one that is obviously meant for school reading? Sign me up!" Annnnnnd it never properly caught with me. Maybe it's not my thing, maybe it's being 12 and reading a book for school or what, but it did nothing for me.
55. Favourite guilt-free, pleasure reading?
Oh, honey, you need to ask? I feel no guilt with my reading to begin with, but if I'm just reading something for warm fluffy bunnies, I love me some SV or BSC crack. If you want more recent, I'm a Harry Dresden fan and Kate Brian writes some cotton candy for the brain.
Which is actually not the book rambling I intended to do, but of course now I can't remember what I'd originally set out to blather on about. Isn't that just the way? Though this did remind me that it's getting time to go through my books and reorganize them again. When I go on a comfort book reading binge, I don't tend to put them away. Which creates problems on the bookshelf and problems in my room when the books pile and then fall. My babies!
I realized yesterday that I have completed my Sweet Valley High collection. It's not complete-complete in that I'm done with it forever and a day, but complete in that for the main SVH series, I own a copy of every book. Every book. I have a few that I want to upgrade (#41 for instance), and I fully intend to acquire the various re-issues and original covers for the books that came that way. But for now, and it's actually been this way for awhile, I have every SVH book.
I am also only one book away from having the entirety of SVU, and I would have had that done already except the book that's standing between me and completion is a really awful book. (Chloe's Love Diary.) I'm not sure if I 'need'/want any upgrades for SVU. Something to look into when my room is cleaner and I have space to put them all down on the floor and compare. Yes. I'm that kind of book nerd.
In large part, this is thanks to
ithinkitisayit and especially
luxken27. *throws confetti*
In other news, my brother owes me $37. Do not let me forget this. Also, my credit limit went up. Huzzah! Now, I should probably straighten up in here a little, then a smidge in my room, and then take a shower.

Nope. Everytime I think I might like one, I:

- calculate the likelyhood something would spill on it (very high)

7. Do you prefer to read one book at a time, or several at once?

Date: 2011-11-09 03:23 am (UTC)I'm jealous that you've completed the SVH collection! Jealous and envious...OMG. I'm one book away from completing the BSC series (ALL of the BSC series, save Little Sister which ~totally~ doesn't count) and I will be doing a happy dance and probably posting pictures because yes. I am that big of a nerd.
I've got a long ways to go with my SVs, tho. And I'm currently broker than broke and probably will be for the next couple of months, so SIGH.

Date: 2011-11-09 12:18 pm (UTC)Ohmylord. Which book is standing between you and BSC completion? (And true, LS doesn't count. It counts less than SV Kids would count towards a complete SV collection.) Book collection pictures! It must be done!
Empathy on the broker than broke.

Date: 2011-11-09 03:10 pm (UTC)FF#9. It figures, doesn't it? LOL :P
I almost have all the SVTs that I want, too, but the others are only about half-complete. I feel better, tho, knowing the bookstore of crack and win is just around the corner :P

Date: 2011-11-09 04:09 pm (UTC)Can we take a moment and discuss the cracktacularness of the SVT towards the end of its run? Because wow.
*throws confetti for the little bookstore of crack and win* I see it's been upgraded to something more dangerous!

I never made it to the end of SVT - what happened? (And why did all of the SV series go crack at around the same time? Talk about ruining whatever tenuous grasp you had on in-universe continuity o.O)
*throws confetti for the little bookstore of crack and win* I see it's been upgraded to something more dangerous!
It has...I'm under a self-imposed ban until funds recover, because I can never walk out of that store with less than $20 of goodies.

Date: 2011-11-10 12:27 pm (UTC)SVT: I'm still missing a good chunk of the end of SVT (it's where most of the actual holes, and not "upgrade me!" situations, in my collection exist) but on a superficial level, the twins turned orange. The Valley forgot rule #1 (Reality Has No Place Here!) which is kind of funny because the switch happened right after they tried to convince us there was an evil entity haunting a house. Evil!
*peeks at pub dates* Something must've gone down in 96, because SVH took us to vampireville and then switched over to the photocover minis (which is about where my tolerance of the series hits all time lows), SVT switched from House of EVIL to "what? supernatural? Other than ESP? No. Teehee, boys are cute." and SVU fared the best by introducing Nick. It wasn't til 99 that they went and decided "We need a new Sam. Make him an ass. Make it so! And get rid of everyone else we might recognize!" and thus Sophomore Year was born.
I want a bookstore that tempts me $20 worth... that is close enough that it doesn't involve Serious Planning to get to it.

Date: 2011-11-10 03:42 pm (UTC):D!!! Thank you! I've ordered the final book, now let's see if one of the two people who have it listed will actually send it, LOL.
Boy, talk about Christmas coming early!
on a superficial level, the twins turned orange
o.O Yeah, I stopped reading around #83 or so, before the cover redesign. I never made it to the haunted house and ebil!Elizabeth and though I'm tempted every time I walk into the bookstore and see the copies of said books, I haven't yet given in.

Interesting! So basically, they went in opposite directions...hmm. I only made it to Death Valley (#116) before giving up on SVH, but when I saw the vampire miniseries eons later, I was curious. I ordered the first one from amazon and got as far as Jessica having a cat named Jasmine before I was like "WTF kind of alternate reality shit is this?!" Because yeah. What?!
It wasn't til 99 that they went and decided "We need a new Sam. Make him an ass.
SAM WOODRUFF NOW, SAM WOODRUFF FOREVER! SVU Sam doesn't exist in my world. Yes, even though I own his Secret Love Diary (*sporfle*)
I want a bookstore that tempts me $20 worth... that is close enough that it doesn't involve Serious Planning to get to it.
I wish this place would open more branches. Their expansion into my city made their grand total of stores across the country = 2, so. You know. The other one is in GA, I think.
(no subject)
Date: 2011-11-11 04:12 pm (UTC)I forget when I originally stopped reading the SVT books, but it was before the house o' Evil, because I remember walking past them in Kmart and thinking "No. Way. Really? *grabby hands*" Which was also how Evil Elizabeth (creepiest cover ever, yes? no? Possibly?) came home. I don't remember much about Evil Elizabeth beyond the cover is banished to always, always, ALWAYS having something on top of it because, yeah. The evil house books I think I liked. I don't remember a ton about them beyond being kind of surprised that it was a SVT storyline and not a SVH one.
But otherwise I say no to orange. The stuff I've read after those is just... not good. Sort of like the first part of the Unicorn series is awesome (for me, anyway) and the part I didn't know existed until I wound up on PBS? Not so much.
I wonder what prompted the switches, other than I'm guessing sales were down and it was time to adapt again. *muse* Vampire SVH is good for icon, not so good for much else... other than vampires are real and werewolves are not.
SAM WOODRUFF NOW, SAM WOODRUFF FOREVER! SVU Sam doesn't exist in my world. Yes, even though I own his Secret Love Diary (*sporfle*)
This. This so hard. SVU Sam was just" ... what? No!" from start to finish... well, as finished as SVU got, that is. Why couldn't the magical vodka take SVU Sam down? If one Sam goes down, they all go down!
Oh little bookstore of crack and win, SC is a cute little southern state too. Surely we deserve a lovely little bookstore of awesome, yes? Like... near me. None of this upstate/practically Georgia or NC nonsense. :p
