Your help is needed!

Anyone have any opinions on scanners? It has come to my attention repeatedly in the last two months or so that I really miss having one. I don't want to spend eleventy-billion dollars on one as I mostly would be using it to scan pictures (probably not negatives as my brief foray into google-fu alerts me that traditionally this ups the price tag considerably), books, and magazines. Oh, and Widget's school papers that they don't let us keep. Ideally I'm hoping to find one whose bed is larger than letter sized (legal, maybe?) but it's not a deal breaker necessarily.

So. What do you have and do you like it? Love it? Married it and are awaiting your union to be legalized? Hate it and keep trying to kill it but it. will. not. die?

Oh, and I think Jeannie from the Hangout found American Girl and joined. There are some posts on Playthings that scream Jeannie. If they're actually someone else, damn, there are multiples of her out there. o_O

I have a printer/scanner/copier all in one dealie, the HP Deskjet F4280. The scanner is awesome, and the native software + free image editing software (aka Paint.NET) make it easy to resize, crop and whatnot. So I'd definitely suggest an HP.

(I bought this thing at Target a couple of years ago for $60, so I'd imagine the price has come down some in the meanwhile. Plus - printer! copier! THESE THINGS ARE SO WORTH IT for me as a singleton :P)

I believe that Sam's has some decently priced 3-in-1's. Kodak is a good brand to go with if you're mainly doing pictures/things with lots of detail. And it's hard to go wrong with a HP.
