impyHey, it's early enough in December that the Christmas carols aren't completely driving everyone insane, so it's the perfect time to share my favorites and maybe one or two that I loathe.
Everybody wins!
When I was growing up, we tended to listen to my grandfather's holiday music when opening presents for a couple of reasons. One, it was his house. Two, he wasn't big on 'modern' music. And three, for some odd reason, all the stations that insisted on playing holiday music before Thanksgiving decided that they'd stop playing Christmas music on Christmas. I have never understood that. EVER.
Any way. I suspect on some level that this instilled a hatred of these songs in other family members, but dude. I love some of them.
My childhood favorite song was Bing Crosby's "Mele Kalikimaka":
This is my favorite Christmas song ever and has been ever since I saw the video many, many moons ago.
Bing Crosby & David Bowie's "Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth". It's rarely played on the radio, so I have trained people to call me when it's on so I can catch it.
Work has ruined many a Christmas song (or, hell, any song) for me, but it did gift me with one or two songs I actually quite like. This is one they gave to me to make up for the whole having to hear Muskrat Love three times a night, every night, for five years.
Dido's "Christmas Day":
This is another that I probably wouldn't like as much if not for work, though this one I'd heard before.
"Every Year, Every Christmas" by Luther Vandross:
I have a soft spot for Silent Night done well and Carol of the Bells makes me happy. Honestly, I'm pretty easy to please with holiday songs. I just hate it when you have to hear five versions of the same four songs over and over. Five versions of the same two hundred songs? Sure. But there are so many songs out there, so many versions, why limit yourself?
And one I hate.
I'm not really sure how I'd feel about this if not for six or so years of Christmas Eves at work, ringing people up and then this song comes on and you find yourself ringing to the song. Do you know how fast you end up going and how frustrated you are when you can't friggin' stop? It's torture, let me tell you.
I've also yet to find any Christina Aguilera Christmas songs I like nor am I interested in finding any, given the ones I have heard. (Why, work. WHY?) There's some version of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" that topples the Jessica Simpson disaster from its perch as my least favorite version of it but I can't figure out which one it is.
