Let's talk ponies, shall we? Specifically, the impending Equestria Girls.

I'm gonna be shallow and start with the artwork itself. I'm not a big fan. I always feel kind of bad about saying that about artwork because someone obviously created it and odds are good they put in some effort, but something about it feels oddly half-assed. I'm thinking it's the faces. Something weird is going on there. When the ponies seem more expressive than their human-ish counterparts, you've done a bad job.
I'll admit to adoring certain pieces of art that float by when people humanize the ponies. Some of it really is good, and it's really interesting to me the way different people see the Mane Six. I love that Pinkie is all over the map but is frequently chubby. I love the idea that Rarity is so fashiony because if she were a person, she'd be a non-sample size and would be forced to make her own outfits instead of shopping off the "fat people are unworthy of cute clothes" rack. I adore it when someone sees something I would never have thought of and that's how they chose to present it in their art.
I also get why this would not necessarily be used when creating what'll essentially be a very long doll commercial (since MLP episodes are pony commercials). Trust me. I get it. Interchangeable clothing options will necessitate that there are no larger characters here. Thing is, the argument is almost always followed by "Lookit Monster High."
Yeah. I'm looking. The original lineup had Draculaura the character being considerably shorter than the other ghouls and yet somehow this didn't translate to doll form and people SURVIVED. Well, I guess that disconnect means she has the least number of dolls, right? Um, no. Lala there is quite probably still in the lead she picked up last year. Then Abbey comes along and is easily larger/taller than the others and her doll? Same size. And she's not exactly lacking in fans either, given how often she doesn't shelf sit. Which isn't to say there isn't a call for Howleen and Nefera to share body sizes with Draculaura and Abbey respectively, but there hasn't been an implosion in the world due to the characters presented on screen not matching the dolls in hand.
So no, I'm not buying the argument that they all have to be the same height. Not even with the cute pony vector gif that points out that the ponies are all recolors of the same damn shape. Indeed. They're toy ponies.
Which isn't really my beef with this project. (Fandom's reaction, yes. The project itself, enh, not so much.) My issue is that I don't get why this is even a thing. No, really. I don't understand why taking the pony out of My Little Pony is a good idea. It's not like the ponies don't do all kinds of things real horses don't do already. We really have to turn them into people...? Why ?
I suppose no one will be able to answer that until the first episode airs/leaks but in the meantime I'm sitting here, confused. I look at it from various angles and I guess I understand the people who say that Hasbro wants a piece of the MH pie. Okay... Except the MH art skews older than the promo pic here for EG does, so at most it's going to hit the kids who are a little too 'old' for ponies but won't necessarily be hitting the far end of the target MH group. Essentially buying them two additional years, maybe? I'm not really sure the target range for MLP. I do know that MH swings back and picks up five years old and up (Widget's sisters) but isn't really meant for a ton younger due to the hands popping off and such.
I don't get it. But I'm not entirely opposed to the idea. Before we hit the hopeful stuff, I do have to say that I'm disappointed that visually they went with this *gestures to the promo art* when there are so many awesome humanized versions to be done, even with them all being the same shape/size. If you're going to go, you go big, honey. Go big or go home. This? This is not going big.
Anyway. On to the stuff I do like.
There will obviously be dolls. In theory, they should be adorable since that's what this will all be done in prep for. This is also the biggest unknown. It took me some time to come around to the newer pony toys (the art, however, was an immediate love) so... maybe this will simply be the inverse of that.
Dolls, though. I do love me some tiny little plastic people.
I love that they went with rainbow colors instead of giving them human skintones. Again, go big or go home. If the theory is that this is to cash in on the MH phenomenon, then yeah, fun colors help. I also love that this avoids having people say stupid shit when some pony is something other than what one person envisioned. (See: any wank ever involving Twilight not being presented as white.) Anyone complaining about the colors being used shall be found guilty of stupidity in the first degree and shot at dawn.
So, yes. I complain a lot but I'm curious as to what, exactly, they're going to do with this.
Completely unrelated, but I spent the morning looking at The Hawkeye Initiative. How did I not know this was a thing? HOW? I'd even read some of the stuff that led to it being a thing and still missed it.
Glorious way to spend the morning, let me tell you.
(Scroll down to the BattleChasers cover. I could overlook a LOT during my time in comics. I did. I even enjoyed some stuff that I shouldn't have, given the artwork that accompanied the stories. But that fucking cover. That. Fucking. COVER.)
Back in toyland, the order I debated making for weeks and then finally did, only to have Smurfhouse implode on me, shipped and should be here Tuesday. I wish it would be here tomorrow but I'm not holding my breath.
I waffled back and forth from the time the new stuff was unveiled right up until I placed my order. What to get, what not to get, should I get anything at all, you know. The usual. I rarely make impulse AG purchases. But FREE SHIPPING. There you go, right?
Anyway, I knew going in that I wanted the new spring dress and Molly's pajamas. Since that alone is pretty expensive, I might as well go all in and get the rest to qualify for the free shipping. But what to buy? Last week had Ivy's new outfit on sale, but I just wasn't interested yet. I debated the new Bitty Twins dress of spring/summer cuteness, but decided nah. Saw the Bitty spring dress to match the larger doll's and it was a big pile of No Thank You. Soooo... then I realized I wanted another historical outfit. Okay, self. What's callin' your name? I debated some of Julie's stuff for Ivy, but nothing really screamed out. Debated Kit's super frilly dress for Ruthie. Meh. I own all of Molly and Emily's clothes, aside from the pjs already in the order.
Eventually realized I wanted a a Caroline outfit. But which one? Holiday was a no. I'm kind of miffed they cheaped out on the work dress. I like her pajamas but my group needs a new set like ... well, no. Because of this reasoning, Sage's pajamas are also still not ordered. Next time, I guess. Which left her coat (on backorder, I believe), her birthday dress, and her traveling outfit. Eventually I went for the traveling one because I think Sonali will steal it and look fabulous.
Still needed one more outfit to put me in the proper range. Realized Kit's birthday dress is the least expensive non-pajama outfit. Snapped it for Ruthie, even with the less than flattering reviews.
I'm seriously excited for this order to come in.
Falling asleep here.
