Borax works really well with controlling fleas. Get regular Borax powder (not the laundry kind) and sprinkle it on the floor around the edges of your rooms. You can also sprinkle it all over the carpet and vacuum it up, but around the edges just leave it to settle into the cracks. The powder dehydrates the areas it touches which basically drys up the fleas. It's not harmful to your pets because they won't be able to get at it. This was recommended to us by our vet and it's worked so far. We still vacuum regularly and we do give our cats Advantage flea medication when needed because the Borax isn't 100% effective. But it helps a lot. It also has the added benefit of making the room smell fresher because drying up dampness in the floor means less mold/mildew/mustiness in general.
