Holiday weirdness
Nov. 19th, 2013 11:47 amWhat's that, inbox? I have a notification from Pinterest? Mmmhmm, I'm gonna stop you right there, inbox. I know what you're going to tell me. I do. And it is super awesome, this news, because I do feel all warm and fuzzy inside when someone likes or repins one of the few things I've bothered to pin (I think I can spend more time sucked into Pinterest than I do TVTropes, but with less to show for it). Thing is, it's always the same pin.
Always.
Even when it's actually another pin, they also repin THAT one. You know the one. Mmmhmm. Yeah, I just went through six notifications and they were all the same pin. All of them. Not a single exception. Let's keep digging into the inbox to see how high that number will rise, k?
7...8...9...10...
Le gasp! #11 was an entirely different one!
*dead from shock*
You know, it's taking all my self control to not go in to work tonight and buy all the holiday magazines. ALL OF THEM. Because I love holiday magazines. I do. Halloween and Christmas mags fill me with such warm fuzzies and I love magazines... but two things are stopping me. One, having to move 137 boxes of magazines was a royal bitch and I refuse to do that again. I just will not do it. Which means that in order to bring in a new magazine, I need to be rid of like, five. Normally this wouldn't be an issue but I kind of have my closet on lock down at the moment so... yeah. Reason 2? I haven't the money. Well, I do, but I need to buy people gifts and stuff.
So, I wander over to Pinterest cuz that's what all the cool people do and then I run away because who the fuck ruins a perfectly good book to craft some ugly wreath? Or, my favorite, looked like someone just spray painted a book with like, silver glitter or something, and propped it open to hold stuff like cards. Pretty, and depending on the glitter, might not ruin the book, just make it super festive. Until I read the description and it was basically "just rip the cover off any hardback lol!" WTF? Trees died for your book and now you're fucking that book up for NO GOOD REASON.
Today I have fallen into "lol, just use your extra ornaments!" Um, what extra ornaments? Also stop with the lol. It isn't cute and hasn't been since, I dunno, ever. But fine, whatever. And then I ran into Felt World.
I hate felt. I have always hated felt, which is unfortunate since childrens' crafts are frequently done in felt. It catches on my skin and it's scratchy and I do not like it at all. Just the word makes my skin crawl. *twitch*
I should probably bring this around to a happy place, huh? So. The house is as decorated as it gets for Thanksgiving (the wreath is up, the scarecrow is presiding over an impressive pumpkin patch that looks like orange glitter exploded) and it's looking a little... empty. I want to start decorating for Christmas but I'm normally one of those people who scoops up Thanksgiving and refuses to let people just trample over it on their way to Christmas. What gives?
Of course. Just as I figure out what I'm going to do with Widget's Advent Calendar, it sells out just as I hit order. I kid you not. D:
And now back to Backorder Roulette!
First up is Jess wearing this year's Sparkle Party Dress.

Sparkle Party Dress for Dolls + Charm
Item# F6161 // $36 (currently on backorder)
Her doll can sparkle from head to toe for the holidays! This fantastically festive outfit has everything her doll needs to get ready for a shimmering holiday party, including:
A fancy ruby-red dress trimmed with rosettes and rhinestones, featuring a mesh bubble-skirt with a sparkly holographic print and a satin sash
Cream-colored tights
Sparkly red shoes to match her dress
A rhinestone-studded headband to complete her look with lots of brilliant sparkle
A "Fair" heart charm for the doll's charm-keeper necklace

This picture skews the colors a bit (sorry, it was overcast and I still cannot find that lamp) but it does the job well enough. You get hints of the holographic print underlay in the bubble skirt and you can tell that we've got a few different reds working here.
It's a very pretty dress and while I can't say it's MUST OWN, it's a nice addition to the collection especially considering the fact that I don't have a ton of red dresses.

There's a clear plastic covering between you and the glitter so you don't need to worry about it shedding or catching on tights or your hands or anything. Also, your doll will be able to stand in these if that's your thing.

I love you, shoes. I really do. The tights are thick and easy to put on and I wouldn't be surprised if they were the same as the pair included with the Brocade set as they went on just as easily.

View from the back.

Inside of the dress is lacking the mesh-type material, which makes sense.

First thing I noticed when I took the dress out of the box was that the rosette was an entirely different shade of red than the dress, which isn't apparent in the promo pictures. It's also kind of distracting at first. It doesn't photograph as a huge difference in most shots, but here it's pretty obvious.

Here's a closeup of it.

Bubble skirt underlay looks blue in the shots but is less so in person. It's one of the best things about this dress, giving it an unexpected pop of awesome.

Jess looks cute in it and here you can see the "rhinestones" on the headband are probably exactly what you'd expect them to be. The headband is slightly less annoying than the one on the Brocade outfit, but again it's too short to properly keep their hair back without it popping right out again. :/

Ozzy investigates matters.

And poses with Jess.
Overall, I'd say snag this one if you're afraid it'll sell out and think you'll kick yourself for missing it. Otherwise I'd wait for a clearance price, especially if you alread had some red dresses in your doll closet. The reds used in this outfit are varied and it's a little weird to have three and a half reds thrown together when really, two would do. (The shoes are a different shade of red, the dress has that rosette issue, and the ribbon around the middle is yet another color variation.)
All of which sounds bad but it's easier to warn you ahead of time and not have you shriek "But you didn't say __!" I'm pretty happy with this one, though I'm not 100% sold on it being for Jess.
Oh! The velcro on this one will snag the tights!
And now we shift our attention to Kanani who is sporting Saige's Sparkle Dress.

Saige's Sparkle Dress
Item# F2213 // $30
Saige wears this fancy outfit to the Balloon Fiesta® on her tenth birthday! It includes:
A taffeta dress with a gold-foil sparkle design trailing across the front and a criss-cross sash at the waist to accent the full skirt
Golden western boots to match
A cactus-flower necklace on a long chain for extra shine

Poor Nani, her legs look stumpy in this. Plus side, she's standing on her own so... there's that probably making the stumpiness happen.
This looks better on Nani in pictures than it does in person because this dress is one of those pinks that is really, really close to being red and yet... is still very pink. Go figure.

We begin with the boots. Which are soft and easy to put on. The gold is prettier in person and there's a decided heel which will make balancing for standing a smidge more difficult. We like, and I wasn't really sure how I was going to feel about the pimp boots.

They velcro up the back. I'm sure that if I wanted to, I could get them to look perfectly matched up but um, lazy. No socks or tights or anything, but the boots are lined so they won't stain your doll.

Skirt is lined and behold, a smidge of tulle to make things more festive.

Back of the dress where I did care enough to line things up properly.

Waist.

Fun fact: This dress goes out of its way to sit on the seams for the arm joints if that's your thing.

This is probably the most color accurate photo I have. It's also meant to highlight the silver necklace (which just to be contrary, is looking less silver here.) because when I think "Gold boots, gold dots" I also think "silver necklace." Right?

Clasp of the necklace is unusual.

Nani shows off the whole "hiding the arm joint seams" thing and is generally cute as hell.
I bought this one because I am a sucker for doll jewelry. That's... about it, actually. I think it's ridiculous that this is the outfit she's supposed to go up in a hot air balloon in but the dress itself is very pretty and based on reviews elsewhere, this is also a dress that looks good on a multitude of dolls. I'm looking forward to testing that theory. ;)

Side by side.

Whazzat? Ivy wanted in, too? Of course she did. 3 Jess molds with variations. Nani is medium skinned, Ivy's got the paint near her eyes, and Jess is the original.

Ivy is wearing a shirt I bought from The Beach Shack on Etsy.
If you haven't trolled Etsy for AG stuff, I should warn you of two things.
1) There is a lot of fug. A LOT. Ebay has more fug, but Etsy's is more concentrated, I think.
2) You will fall in love with an outfit and then look at the price and die. If you're lucky, you won't come back and decide "$100 for one outfit? Weeeeeeellll, why not?" though some might argue with that being a good thing.
And now I'm off to shower.
ETA: Yes, ebay seller. I sent you a request for an invoice because I totally did not want you to combine shipping like your listing says you will. I want to pay twice the shipping because you're a dick. WTF. This box better be fan-freakin'-tastic.
Always.
Even when it's actually another pin, they also repin THAT one. You know the one. Mmmhmm. Yeah, I just went through six notifications and they were all the same pin. All of them. Not a single exception. Let's keep digging into the inbox to see how high that number will rise, k?

Date: 2013-11-19 09:40 pm (UTC)Anyhow! Not sure who will get the sparkle dress yet. Seems to early for holiday dress time, but that also means all the pretty new dresses are sitting unused and don't quite have enough casual outfits yet, either. I appreciate the reviews, though! I figure I'll just dump in everything on Black Friday and we'll see how *that* outfit roulette turns out. ;)

Date: 2013-11-20 09:12 pm (UTC)AG's site is notoriously bad for being useful. Which meant it was pretty easy to find new stuff if you were so inclined but a pain if there was a huge sale or, I dunno, you wanted to track things.
I keep thinking it's too early for holiday dresses and then I remember it's about a month til Christmas and honestly, I'm not going to have time to change everyone into Festive Fall and then Winter Party gear, so... slowly they'll transition from "well, I could get to this outfit to make you not naked" to Winter Party.
I've got this mental picture of you dumping all the clothes in a box or something and the dolls fighting over stuff. :p

Date: 2013-11-19 11:14 pm (UTC)I wonder how they'd look if you switched the outfits. I'm not totally sold on Kanani in the pink frock (but I think Jess looks great in the red.)
In my own AG related news, it turns out I won't get my bonus until February because the company switched to a bi-annual payment plan. So I most likely won't get my first AG until February. WOE.

Boo hiss, company. Boo! Hiss! I'm still gonna send you your giftcard soon (much sooner than say, me sending your books) just in case.

Date: 2013-11-20 02:38 am (UTC)I like the color of the pink dress, but am not sold on how it sits on the shoulders - I think it highlights the little bump between the soft body and the hard molded arms. The cut of the red dress, while not hiding the arm seams, at least doesn't accentuate this weirdness, imo. I guess because its not hanging half-on, half-off?
Not that my opinion counts for anything, but. That's what I noticed :P (Also I sort of love Kanani's coloring! Was a little sadfaced to see she was a GotY.)

Date: 2013-11-20 09:18 pm (UTC)Hunh. Good call on the shoulders there. Now we just need a dress that doesn't highlight that area and covers the seams and we'll be good.
The universe is still waiting for a not!Nani to join the MyAG lineup. I'm starting to despair of this ever happening. :(
