Kit's Summer Dress

Finally we have Kit's Summer Dress, which is going for $32. Because it's historical and apparently on the chopping block, we'll go all out with the links and pictures.

This dress came out in 2011 and at the time my immediate reaction was, "Kit would never voluntarily wear that. Ever. Have you not read the books? Even movie!Kit would say no, and she allowed a lot more than book Kit ever would have. No."
And then someone pointed out that movie!Kit said no, but you know who didn't? Movie!Ruthie:

She's on the blasted DVD cover in this dress for cryin' out loud! This is not Kit's dress, this is clearly Ruthie's. It's got some purple which she clearly digs, it's frilled to hell and back which, again, is Ruthie's thing, and is ever so ~fancy~ and that ain't practical Kit. Still, I dragged my feet because this is $32 and I'm not made of money. Also, I could never figure out whether this just wasn't my style or if it was hideous AND not my style.
But then it stopped coming up properly on the AG site and wasn't in stores and Personal Shoppers and Customer Service were labeling it as Discontinued. Ruthie hit me with something and pointed out that if this were an outfit Ivy wanted, she'd have it already, dammit.
Sooooooo... I put back Isabelle stuff and bought it.
Onward:
Kit's Summer Dress
Item# T6696 // $32
For special occasions during warm weather months, Kit wears her fanciest outfit. She'll shine at a sunny, summer celebration in this outfit that features:
A cotton floral dress with lace yoke, wide collar, decorative tie, fitted bodice, and a tiered skirt with a wide sash that ties in back
A pretty pink satin hair bow
A pair of cream T-strap shoes with punch details

Here it doesn't look so bad. Take a good look at those shoes because there isn't another shot of them, sorry. (They're pretty shiny in person and I approve of this although really, where the fudge is Kit getting shiny new shoes at this point?) The shoes are pretty typical doll shoes and I have nothing against them. They also help me stomach the price on this set, though they're probably also partially why it's this price to begin with.

So much floral, so little interest.

The sleeves are interesting in that it's sleeveless, really, but that huge collar bit (my fashion-fu powers do not exist!) goes all the way around and creates sleeves.

It comes with the sash tied into a beautiful bow and this isn't too far off from that original bow. Honestly, the bow is my favorite bit.

Ruthie isn't wearing the hairbow because it's attached to a ponytail-o and I hate that. I can never get them to look right, though I'm aware that it's for kids to have an easier time of it.
I... am not really a fan of this dress. Since it's marketed as Kit's summer dress, it's really inappropriate for the character who is very no-nonsense and not into pink, florals, or frills. Had this been made for Ruthie, I'd cut it a lot more slack, but wasn't so...
I feel like the dress swallows the doll it's on and that it's very, very busy. It's something that screams, "I am a doll's dress!" which a lot of AG stuff doesn't do. I'm not a fashiony type nor am I the type who knows a ton about historical fashion, so maybe it's the most accurate dress EVER but I wouldn't know that without pictures/proof. (Which if you've found, please share.) Fabric wise, I have nothing against the dress. I like the way the lace bits photograph although in person it's a little off, which is likely more a case of user error than dress fail.
I bought it because Ruthie's collection is pretty small and this is clearly meant to be a version of her DVD dress (which I think is prettier than this so I wish they'd gone ahead and done a closer copy) sooooooooo... I had to. We'll try it on other people though, because Ruthie knows how to share. Also, I wouldn't classify the sash/bow/hair ribbon as pink. It's that purple that seems to incite people to flame wars over whether or not it's pink or purple. It's a very Sleeping Beauty problem to have, only instead of "pink! blue!" we have "pink! purple!"
