Oooh, shiny stuffs!
Feb. 13th, 2014 10:38 amAhoy Kids! Do you know what time it is? It's...
New AG stuff time!
You saw that coming, right? I mean... yeah. Tomorrow is Valentine's Day and they usually do something for VDay. (The outfit for that comes out in January, but they do an actual release right before Valentine's.) It's never a huge release, but it's usually interesting and random and those words could both be accurately used to describe this offering!
Where should we begin? Perhaps in the more modern sections and we'll work our way up to WTF, shall we?
As is customary for this release, we have an outfit one could use for Easter. (Come on, free shipping!)

Double Bow Dress // $30 // Item# F8142
Your girl can dress up her doll for a warm-weather celebration in this pretty outfit! It features:
A cotton sateen dress with two satin bows at the tucked bodice and a full skirt
Sling-back sandals
A headband featuring a mesh pinwheel with a rhinestone center
A "Kind" rectangle charm for the doll's charm-keeper necklace
*grabby hands* It's simple but bluuuuuuuueeeeeee. And also pretty! Is it worth $30? Probably not, however that's not gonna stop me. I will, however, wait for free shipping. The moment that swings on through, this baby shall be mine. (Unless, of course, actual owner's pictures reveal something HORRIBLE lurking in the outfit somewhere.)
So far AG is winning!

Egg Decorating Set // $32 // Item# F8148
She can help her doll celebrate spring with this doll-sized egg-decorating set! It includes all these make-believe supplies:
An egg carton
Five crayons in a box
Three bottles of dye in a box
Two bottles of glitter
Two patterned eggs in cups
Colorful decorated eggs on a white display stand topped with a bunny
An oval tray to hold it all
Aw hell, what is this cuteness? I don't need it. I DON'T. I waaaaaaaaaaaaaant it, though. Easter stuff for dolls, what's not to love?
Two for two, AG, well played.

Floral Swim Outfit // $30 // Item# F8116
This outfit is perfect for a fun-filled day at the beach! It includes:
A two-piece swimsuit that's printed with bright blossoms
A terry swim dress to keep her comfy while she relaxes after a "swim"—it has halter straps and embroidered flowers at the hem
Pink sandals to protect her feet
A "Loyal" heart charm for the doll's charm-keeper necklace
Oh look, a cuter version of Ivy's Romper (which is still on sale for $14! No one wants that poor thing!) and a bathing suit. I'm not one for doll bathing suits but I don't want to burn this one with fire. I think the swim dress is very cute and I'd probably buy this set just for that (and the flip-flops) if it ever goes on sale.

Swim Gear // $32 // Item# F8099
Her doll can have fun in the sun with this beach set! It includes:
Two-tone swim fins
Goggles with an attachable snorkel for make-believe underwater exploring
Pretend sunscreen
A soft beach towel
A pink beach tote to carry her gear
Can't really say the same for the Swim Gear. Not sure if this would've been my thing as a kid, but as an adult I'm good. Towel looks cute, though.
And the sets put together:

Another pair of sets!

Happy Birthday Outfit // $24 // Item# F9174
Hip, hip, hooray—it's her doll's birthday! She can "blow out the candles" in this outfit:
A top with a glittery birthday-cake graphic
A cute skirt that has two front pockets
Faux-jeweled shoes to complete her festive look
Includes a "Smart" square charm for the doll's charm-keeper necklace
I dig the shoes. I don't care all that much about the outfit although I do appreciate the price tag.

Birthday Accessories // $24 // Item# F9180
The birthday fun has just begun! Your girl can prepare a super celebration with these doll-sized accessories:
A faux-jeweled tiara with an etched birthday message
A set of stick-on birthstone earrings
A pink bracelet with a dangly heart charm
A gift box topped with a bow
A sweet birthday card
Awww. Cute. But I'm good, thanks.
(Also: Holy badly done photoshop, Batman!)
Speaking of badly done photoshop...

Rainy Day Coat // $24 // Item# F8028
Polka dots brighten the rainiest days! Her doll can stay warm and dry in this bright-pink raincoat splashed with white polka dots. It features a high collar, long sleeves, and buttons on the front. It also has a bright-pink belt that loops around the waist. Includes a "Loyal" rectangle charm for the doll's charm-keeper necklace.
Can't really focus on the raincoat because that doll is so pretty! Love the shoes, but they come in the other part of the set...

Rainy Day Set // $34 // Item# F8022
When the rain sprinkles down, this pretty polka-dot umbrella will put her in a sunny mood. It opens up just like the real thing, and her doll can really hold it! Includes rubber boots with bright-pink handles and white bows.
And much like I told McKenna's outfit and umbrella sets no, I tell you no as well.

Dining Table and Chairs $95
It's a table and chair set, you don't get a description. There are, apparently, polka dots on the fabric on the chairs, which is a nice touch. If I didn't think $95 was an insane price for doll furniture (not that it's stopped me before, btw), and I didn't already have Felicity's Table and Chairs (my one true love!) I would be so damn tempted. Look at how pretty these are! Just look! So understated and classic and...

Table Accessories $34
What the shit did you just do, AG? You took the classy table and chairs and tarted them up to ugly town. WHY.
Okay, maybe not ugly exactly, but decidedly not my style, anyway. I think it's ingenius, though, making slip covers for the chairs so that they can rotate that out and keep the table longer if that's what they want. Genius! Now, tell me I don't need a doll sized lazy susan.
Bitty gets a thing.

Bitty Baby Twirly Tiered Dress $28
And now we move on to the Historical Section! Why yes, there are some goodies hiding here. There's also a heaping portion of WTF.
First up, if you collect for Josefina, you ain't getting jack. This is lending some credence to the theory that she'll be out the door sooner rather than later. (The NOLA girls didn't get anything, either and their days are pretty clearly numbered.)
Of course, looking at some of these things, not getting anything might be a blessing...
We start with Addy because her release is very, very simple.

Addy's Hairstyling Set // $22 // Item# F9461
Your girl can create a fancy hairstyle for Addy with this set! It includes:
A snood that fits perfectly over her hair
A pink cameo & bow
A double-braid hairpiece for the finishing touch.
I wonder if the hairpiece will match any other doll's hair color. *muse* How cute does Addy look? Seriously, adorable. I don't own an Addy, but I might have to pick this up for Someday.
Onward to Caroline!

Caroline's Hairstyling Set // $18 // Item# F9457
Your girl can create a fancy hairstyle for Caroline with everything in this set, authentic to the styles of her day! It includes a hairpiece adorned with faux pearls to give her a classic updo, plus a shell-shaped comb to style her long, loose curls.
What the fucking hell is that? WHAT THE HELL, MATTEL. What the HELL. Caroline is an unusual looking doll to begin with, but she teeters on the verge of looking very Children of the Damned and then you go and share these pictures? WTF.
Also, this hair accessory is... not good. Couldn't you do this with her hair (and the comb provided in this set) without the extra fluff of curls? This was one of the things shown previously and I still don't get the why of it all. o_O
Let's see what they're giving Kaya...

Kaya's Jingle Dress of Today // $64 // Item# F9452
Special edition - while supplies last
Modern-day girls from the Nez Perce tribe often dress in beautiful garments like this one for pow-wows. This set includes:
A bright-pink satin dress with long cuffed sleeves, an embroidered belt, and two rows of metal jingles attached to ribbon—they make beautiful sounds when the dancer moves
Knee-high turquoise boots with embroidered flowers
A feathered hair comb and two embroidered hair ties
A faux-leather drum and a drum mallet like the real ones that keep the beat for singers and dancers at pow-wows.
Oh, geez. That is a crapton of pink. MY EYES. Where do I even begin? I... you know, no. I do know.
Please note the "special edition" notation. This has no end date, so the hope is clearly to incicte a freakout over not knowing when it will disappear, especially with rumors of the historical line being revamped this year.
Please note that that is a metric crapton of pink. I'm unsure as to how much to mock this because Kaya's got so few things these days and even less in the way of outfits so... yay? This will likely not be coming home with me, although I am looking forward to seeing pictures of it.
We'll touch on the price momentarily.
We move on to Julie.

Julie's Hairstyling Set // $24 // Item# F9454
Julie can freshen up her style with this set, inspired by the 1970s:
A pretend hair dryer that makes "blower" sounds
Two styling attachments for the hair dryer, just like the real thing
Two rainbow hairbows—rainbows were "boss" in Julie's day!
DAMMIT, AG. Stop putting cute bows on pony-os! It's annoying as hell and difficult to get them to work properly! Cute set, horrid second picture up there.
But wait, there's more!

Julie's Dance Set // $64 // Item# F9442
Special edition, while supplies last
Julie can't wait for the school dance! She'll have true '70s style with this groovy outfit and accessories:
A flower-print dress, featuring a stand collar and a macramé belt from her mom's Gladrags shop
White patent knee-high boots
A doll-sized ticket and poster for the dance
A mirrored disco ball that really lights up and spins at the touch of a button to make the dance floor sparkle!
Sweet baby boy who lived, I want those boots. But there is no fucking way I'm spending $64 to get them. I'm pretty sure my irrational dislike of the 70's will mean I will never buy this but it's one I'm going to keep my eye on just in case. Those boots. THOSE BOOTS. Also, I want to know what this looks like on Ivy. Because Ivy, man.
Again, we'll talk about the insane price in a minute, though I suspect you're already getting an idea what I will say...
Now, do we end on a good note or do we end on a possible WTF note? I think I should try for good, so... let us swing by Rebecca.

Rebecca's Hairstyling Set //$20 // Item# F9496
She can create a fancy hairstyle for Rebecca! Like the real ones from 1914, this set includes a pretend curling iron with a handle that opens and closes, a blue hairbow, and a "jeweled" hair comb to wear in her honey-brown curls.
Another product that leaked earlier but this one seems nicer all packaged together like this. I'm not saying $20 is a good price for a fake curling iron, and frick to the pony-o hairbow, but overall, it looks cute. I can't think of a thing of Rebecca's, aside from her pajamas, that bow would go with but still. Cute.

Rebecca's School Play Set // $64 // Item# F9450
Special edition - while supplies last
When she acts in her school play, The Butterfly Queen, Rebecca gets ready with this fantastic costume and theater accessories:
A brocade dress with satin sleeves, plus a long train that attaches in back—it even unfolds to reveal beautiful butterfly wings!
A golden butterfly headband
Satin shoes to complete her queenly ensemble
A makeup box to help her get ready for the spotlight—it comes with a bristled brush she uses to apply make-believe powder and rouge to her cheeks
A printed program to keep as a souvenir of her starring role.
It's attack of the 50 Foot Rebecca! Cower before her royal majesty, the Butterfly Queen! TREMBLE, MORTALS.
I'm not sure whether to have She-Ra flashbacks because of the wingspan or just sit here wondering what, exactly, is going on here. Is it wrong that I want a story to come of this? I do, I really do. Maybe one of her mysteries or something?

I look forward to pictures of this (especially the headband, really) but mostly I cannot justify the cost. Which brings me to the pricetag.
It's high. It's really fucking high. It's also not nearly as high as it could be because of what they've done. They've released an outfit (shoes included) and combined it with an accessory set. You split the cost and it's $32 each, which isn't outside the realm of AG possibility. Some sets split better than others and some are perfect if you love both and would have bought them both.
Personally, I like the makeup aspect of Becky's Outfit. I'm not sold on the butterfly aspects though, so... it will likely not follow me home anytime soon.
And so, finally, we visit Kit.

Kit's Hairstyling Set // $12 // Item# F9463
Your girl can mix and match this set to give Kit a new 'do! These barrettes are perfect for pinning back her blond hair. Includes a vintage-style barrette card, just like the real thing from the 1930s.
[Random] The car freshener I bought the other day looks like Kit's blue barette, only my freshener is black with silver studs. [/random] My favorite thing about this is the card. :P I love that they're showing you that non-doll hair clips were twenty cents while charging you $12 for them. *cackles*
This is something I'd buy if I needed a $12 item to push me into free shipping territory, or it went on sale or something. It's cute, but not earth-shatteringly so.
Last, but certainly not least...

Kit's Candy Making Set // $64 // Item# F9445
Special edition - while supplies last
Kit loves making her own gifts—and sharing treats! This set includes a pretty outfit and sweet supplies:
A make-believe double boiler that's perfect for "melting" the two pretend chocolate squares from the candy box
A spoon that Kit can use to mix the chocolate before pouring it into the candy mold
Three faux chocolate bunnies
Three sheets of netting and three satin ribbons to wrap the bunnies
A pretty basket rimmed with fabric flowers to carry the treats
A fancy pink dress for Kit—it has a sheer yoke, a tiered skirt, and a satin bow across the waist
Shiny pink T-strap shoes to match her dress.

Let's get the critism out of the way first.
1) Kit hates pink. She says so. Repeatedly. Why is everything that's been given to her since her movie pink? WHY.
2) Kit's whole schtick is that she's poor. Ain't no way she had pink shoes to perfectly match a pink dress she's never going to voluntarily wear.
So. Clearly this is meant for Ruthie. Who will have you know that it is a steal at $64, given the fact that AG would have easily charged $32 for the dress and $40-something for the accessory set if broken up.
This is the outfit that I will most likely slip and buy if free shipping doesn't happen soon. Of the four outfits released for the historicals, it's my favorite even if it does drive me insane that Kit is not a pink, frilly girl and yet that's what they keep giving her. If AG can't even be bothered to read the books, why should anyone else? Bah.
It's a mixed bag, as these things so often are, but I've found a few things I would cut someone for and a few more I wouldn't say no to on a good sale.
New AG stuff time!
You saw that coming, right? I mean... yeah. Tomorrow is Valentine's Day and they usually do something for VDay. (The outfit for that comes out in January, but they do an actual release right before Valentine's.) Date: 2014-02-13 09:56 pm (UTC)Double bow dress! Love the color! Love the headband! Love the shoes! Dress is a little bland to me though unfortunately. But I think the other parts are enough to overcome it. I guess it's the matchy-matchyness of it? Which I think is a problem I have with a lot of these new outfits...
Egg decorating set! I knew the pieces wouldn't be separate and that was an instant turn-off for me, like a lot of their other food pieces these days. I guess too since I never did my eggs with crayons and glitter and such, so it didn't float my boat that much as if it was the sets with like the metal holder things and the fizzy tablets and cups or something.
We've established that I have no inclination towards swimsuits, but I do agree, it's one of the cuter ones I've seen. Snorkling set is a snooze for me, as well.
Birthday set! I didn't like those kinds of outfits as a kid and don't like them now. Too twee for me. I agree on the shoes though! Although, then I realize how pretty much ALL of them these days are just those boring ballet flats, when Target has OG shoes that are varied and magnificent for only $8 and it seems really lame with the price increases and the always-the-same shoe style. Accessory set. Tiara's too gaudy and overdone even for me and I wish the earrings had been a re-release of the actual birthstone earrings. Collar's cute, but random and the rest is negligible.
Oh, raincoat. Thankfully I was blinded by your hideous bright pink color scheme and too close-together dots to be tempted by you at all. And then the price. HAHAHA! Fuuuuck no! Although then it just makes me remember how much I want that blue fuzzy robe set since I have a similar one and was all set to buy it before I realized it was $24 for JUST the robe and the PJs are ANOTHER $24 on top of it. You would've had me at $32 for the whole thing, but almost $50? GRRR! >:(
Table goes from boring to ugly to me, so I'm safe from that thankfully! The accessories are cute, but not $30 cute to me.
Hair things...I like the idea more than the execution. I too, loathe those ponytail holder bows.
Addy's....I'm afraid the braids would be too incongruous to her actual hair, not a fan of the snood, but I do like the cameo clip.
Caroline's...reminds me of those terrible fake hair ponytails my batshit crazy coworker wears to make her hair look even crazier. That thing is awful. Comb is pretty, though. And vastly overpriced. Weird that they felt the need to be consistent with those LE outfits, whereas I think those should have been individualized, but the hair things seem like they should all be the same price, but are all over the map.
Kaya! I do want to support you, though I'm curious what this limited edition thing will entail exactly. Will have to debate between this and the other jingle dresses.
Julie's hair stuff. I do like that the bows remind me of ones I had as a kid, but the rest leaves me cold. I guess cause I don't actually ever do anything with my hair and it's not functional for the dolls and I don't play with them in that manner. As a kid, I probably would have enjoyed fake hairdryers but now? Meh.

Date: 2014-02-13 09:57 pm (UTC)Rebecca's brings me to the question of how out-of-scale most of these hair things seem to me. That bow! Is HUGE! And yes, putting that thing in straight is going to be an epic nightmare! Might not be so bad in the back though? And her pieces at least look more displayable, but since they're plastic, they lose that value too.
I am the lizard queen! Butterfly queen? I...actually don't hate this. I hate the price, though, so that's enough. I'm not as enamoured of the make-up as others seem to be, though. It looks really paltry for $32. And once again, them boring-ass shoes...
Kit's hairs. Barrettes are cute. I could justify the $12 more if they came in pairs, but just one giant one...once again the scale looks weird to me and I'd prefer the option of one on each side.
Kit's expensive jazz. Once again, the matchy-matchy irks me. So uniform. Couldn't put any complimentary colors in the shoes or the dress? And I agree with someone who said that most of these historical outfits could have had tights included too. Shoes at least are not flats. But now that I know the pink-hating thing...that's super shitty to just mow down your own characters personalities. WTF? Is Rebecca's new holiday dinner going to feature a nice ham? Ugh. The accessories are actually kind of boring to me too. I think the chocolate squares and bunnies are cute, but not that interesting.
So...I think Kaya's outfit is speaking to me the most. But rather than these, I think I'm now more motivated to buy for poor Josefina and the NOLA girls since it seems like those are going to be "limited edition" gone before this stuff right now. We'll see how I feel whenever that free shipping code hits though! Once again, thank you for the awesome, easy-to-see pics! They help so much!

Date: 2014-02-14 03:01 pm (UTC)Rebecca's shoes are just the worst. I think the only shoe I can think of off the top of my head that's worse is Lizbeth's pink slippers from her tea set as those are useless. Rebecca's are just boring and make her look like she's got cankles or some fat feet. Woe, Rebecca! Woe!
I prefer paired hair barrettes too, unless they're larger and clearly not meant to be on the side of your head. Which these are not. But this way people who want pairs will be tricked into buying two sets! Of course no one's stupid enough to be tricked into it. Might do it, but they wouldn't just write $24 bucks off without a grumble. I hope.
I read this during dinner last night and I nearly snorted my tacos when I got to the ham comment. *dead* That set is clearly being given to Ruthie in hopes of making things right after getting the summer dress of "wtf" for her.
Kid!Me hated it anytime adults got something wrong about characters. (See the HOURS I spent wondering why Dawn from the BSC NEVER had bright blonde hair on any book cover ever. Hours.) Kids are weirdly obsessive about shit and you'd think the company would realize that. Then again, perhaps they know what they're doing because I bought the damned thing. :P
I spent last night at work, when not trying to marvel at the people who seem to feel a pharmasist is as good as an ER doc, trying to remember what I still wanted from Josefina's collection as well as the NOLA collection. It's really shitty they left Josefina out and I hope it was out of some misguided hope to make it a little less obvious the NOLA girls are toast ("Hey, hey, hey, not getting anything in this release means nothing because look, Josefina didn't get anything either!") but I'm not betting on it.
The store pics make Kaya look pretty cute in her new outfit, so that's a selling point for it. :D
And always happy to help with the spamming of new stuff. :)
(More comments to come when I'm less zombiefied.)

Every time I see Julie I see Dawn Schafer, and I just cannot picture Dawn with rainbow hairbows in her hair. (That ~groovy~ dress tho OMFG...)
I like the raincoat! I wouldn't mind having a person-sized one, though I could do without the umbrella and galoshes.
(Hope you're surviving Snowpocalypse 2: Electric Bugaloo!)

Date: 2014-02-14 02:10 pm (UTC)*grins* I still see Julie as Dawn, too. She'd give the rainbows to Claudia who would, of course, make some stunning fashion statement. Possibly while wearing that dress or the boots.
I just want a cute umbrella for me that the boys won't steal.
