MH roundup, part... whatever. 1, possibly.
Feb. 3rd, 2015 01:32 pmYou know what we haven't done in awhile? We haven't discussed the new/upcoming Monster High/Ever After High dolls! This seems like a terrible oversight, so let's try and correct it, shall we?
To be fair, one of the big reasons I haven't done one of these lately is that I am terribly behind on my MH/EAH collecting. I've snagged a few newish ones over the last few months and I had some incredible gifts over the holidays that I still can't get over (never will) but I'm beyond behind on the game.
One of the other reasons is that MH in general has hit the Mattel wall where they start to churn out very similar products and the good stuff is harder to find. Also, I don't really live nearby to anything other than a Walmart and uh, Walmart is hell. So I don't get my Target weekly fixes much because I don't trust myself to not blow money I don't have and when I do go? They got nothin'.
EAH is just a bitch to find anything that isn't Sig Raven/Maddie/Apple. Sort your distribution issues out, Mattel, and then maybe you wouldn't be losing so many damn sales. You give people time to think about their purchases and they're going to say "Yeah, you know, maybe I don't need 32 Apple Whites." You don't want that, you want them wondering if maybe an even 48 would be better. Seriously, how hard is this to understand?
Ahem. I seem to have inadvertently put on my ranty-pants today. Whoops.
Let's go backwards in terms of when things appeared.
Monster Fitness:

Venus: So, Claudia Kishi may stone me for this, but I'm not a fan of side ponytails like that. I think this is a Venus who will depend very much on what she looks like in reality as to whether I'll buy her. So... enh on this alone, but it's always possible she'll turn out better in reality.
Lagoona:
Hey, this is what, the second one of they've given pink hair to? Interesting. I kind of like it, kind of think it looks a bit weird, but I do love Lagoona and she's doing something different and that's always a plus. So this is on the want list.
Catrine:
LOVE HER. I do like side ponytails like this, so maybe Claudia will forgive me. ;) I like the way her hair looks color wise and while I think Lagoona's got my favorite outfit, this one is interesting.
I Love Purses or something:

Robecca:
WANT NOW. Don't give a flying fig about the purses, but the doll is gorgeous and I like the outfit. (meh on the shoes.) Want two, if she's as pretty as she looks like she will be.
Honey:
I... kinda like the shoes? Yay for Honey getting another release, but this is just doing less than nothing for me. In fact, it's making me want to back away slowly and say "Nonono, no thank you." She looks cute, but again, the hairstyle isn't doing her many favors. :/
Amanita Nightshade

Whoo boy, she inspires much vitrol in the MH community because she doesn't actually look a thing like the corpse flower she's supposed to be. (She's actually supposed to be a corpse flower turned into a monster, I believe.) Which, on the one hand, is fine by me. I think corpse flowers are ugly as hell. I mean, fascinating sure, but looks wise? Yeaaaaah, um... ick. Not my thing.
But there are other unusual flowers she could have been if they weren't going to, I dunno, actually make her the girl version of the flower they chose. So I get the dislike on that front.
I think she's odd simply because she's supposed to be an awful, awful 'person' and her doll looks like a sweetheart. The only disconnect to hit me so hard is back when Ghoulia appeared. It's weird.
So as a corpse flower, she's kind of a failure. But she's a pretty doll that I'll be snagging because pretty. Also, I love that shade of purple they used for her hair. Love it so much. And her name on her box is so pretty.
Lagoona/Gil Skating 2 pack:

Here's the other pink Lagoona. Love her outfit. Need it. Gil looks a bit silly but also cute, so want. Remember when they could do more with Lagoona's stories than just throw Gil in? Good times. And this was listed under Boo York but they don't seem to fit the line at all, so until I know more, I'm keeping them on their own.

(ohlord)

Elle Eedee:
Soooooo... originally I thought this was Spectra. I still look at her and think she's Spectra with different hair. It's rarely a good sign when the best thing about you is your name. (L.E.D.)
Nefera

Well damn, it's been... a very long time, hasn't it? That hair is doing Nefera zero favors but I suspect that in person she'll have it smoothed down or something done with it instead of the "just rooted it and haven't even tried to style it yet" look.
I am curious as to how she'll look in person.
Luna Mothews

I'm getting She-ra flashbacks. Which is a good thing and a bad thing all at once. I dig the shoes and I'm most interested to see more pictures of her. Also on the buy list.
Mousecedes King:

Wow. People are really invested in how she did/didn't turn out. Personally I think her proportions are off, and yes, this is saying something given the MH line in general. She's another curiosity for me. I think she's more interesting than Elle but I'm going to need more photos.
Catty:

What the hell are you wearing, love? Your art is gorgeous, your doll is... what the hell. WHAT. THE. HELL. And I hate the shoes, too. I wonder if the silver thing is removable as I'm betting the bow... thing is. Maybe that'd help this hot mess? Because as it is I do not approve.
Astranova:

New character bundled with playset. Oh, Mattel... I thought you'd realized this was a dickmove and decided against it for your MH line. WHY. Can't really tell much about her. She looks... weird, but it could be good, it could be bad.
But in general, I don't like gloppy looking plastic and the MH lines have been dripping in that for a bit. It's just not my favorite thing ever.
Frightseeing
Cleo/Deuce:

Those be some tight pants, sir. And Cleo's makeup is unexpected. Want.
Operetta:

Soooooo... is now the time to point out that I hate that shade of pink/purple paired with red? Because I do. I love the outfit, hate the shoes and glasses paired with it. The doll looks decidedly restrained for Operetta, though.
Clawdeen:

I wish they'd given her golden hair instead of yet another purple haired Clawdeen. I mean, the purple could still have been in the outfit, but it'd have been a nice change of pace. Remember when it seemed like Clawdeen would get a thousand different hairstyles and colors because of how fast her hair was to grow out? Yeah, those were the days. Pretty doll, will likely buy, will likely wish she'd been more unusual.
Draculaura:

I... have no idea where to go with this, honestly. I... my opinions shall be withheld until better pictures surface. As it is, all I see is a lack of pink in the hair of the doll (unusual choice and not necessarily bad) and a very shiny silver portion of her skirt/dress. Weird.
Ghoul Fair
Elissabat:

I'd forgotten she was a character, honestly. Which is silly because I'm dying for the Londoom set that she's in. Gonna need better pictures.
Heath:

Love the artwork, still think Heath's sculpt should reflect his personality more but I feel that way about a lot of the MH line, truthfully. Will buy because Heath.
Howleen:

Pink hair. Again. And teal and pink as a color combo. Gosh, wherever have I seen that before? Howleen has orange hair and yet she's had it, what, once? Oi. Cute enough doll, I hope this is a cheap line.
Scarah:

Pink and that shade of lime green make me kinda ill. Depending on price, might snag and repaint her lips.
Fright-mares

They have cutiemarks! I doubt Hasbro's going to love that, but I want to set them up around Avea and see how long it takes her to kick them off the shelf. ;)
Freak du Chic
Gooliope:

Wow. She's... wow. That's almost as tall as the AG army. I wonder what her price point will be? I'm not sure how I feel about the face (and ugh, Gigi hair combo) but I do know that promo pictures can be misleading. And like I couldn't tell that Elle wasn't Spectra, I thought this was a giant GiGi.
Honey:

Of the two upcoming Honeys, this is the one I'm most likely to buy. Fluffy hair and I like the outfit, even if I'm not sure I like it on HER due to the red. Those boots are also rather spiffy.
Jinafire:

Not sure I like the fire breathing gimmick (the mouths tend to look odd) but she's gorgeous so I'll learn to live. And the artwork? Daaaaaamn.
Rochelle:

Don't want playset. Do want doll. Sigh.
Frankie:

DAMN. The art is creepy cute (Dustin, whatcha doin'?) and Frankie's doll has the fluffy hair and I don't care that it's likely going to be a mess, I need this soon.
Toralei:

Kitty ears on her little parasol! I assume she's a tightrope walker and I love her, I need her. I can even overlook pink shoes on orange fur.
Overall, I think Freak du Chic is the highlight for me, line-wise. There's more that I want than I don't, and even the things I don't are at least interesting to me on some level. Ghoul Fair doesn't even seem like they TRIED, and I don't know how I feel about the purse line other than Robecca, want/need now.
Boo-York is the weirder line in that they obviously went all out, but I don't really like it as a whole. Not yet, anyway. It's got the blobby plastic cranked up to 11 (much like Gloom and Bloom) but then it's got things like Catty's entire look and that's just horrifying, really. I don't really get a lot of it, but I'm willing to give it another look when we get actual promo pictures and real dolls, too.
Next time I think I'll wind my way back a little further, but today I have to get enough sleep and visit Ari, so we'll pause for now.
