TLoSh is fun to say.

To be fair, I should say that I felt like I should really like this episode. It killed the overly bright lighting we've been getting since S4 ended and tried to evoke some sort of atmosphere. Thing is, I never got any feeling for this school and found it insane that the place didn't have a real name. I kept thinking of The Worst Witch [if you know not of what I speak, then you're too young. Really. Or far too old.] and of course, Hogwarts. Both managed to give a magic school a distinct persona in completely different decades and budgets. I'm sure other things have as well, but those two are burned on my brain. And Magic School just felt awfully lame. Maybe that's why magic schools always seem to have uniforms. To sway us easily swayed Americans who didn't suffer through all kinds of uniform torture? *shrug*
Chris was wonderfully underused so that I could keep my cringing to a minimum, and yet this was an episode he might have been better suited to be in more. Odd. As usual, Phoebe took center stage, with far too much build up that only managed to undercut the actual punch. I'm not sure I know anyone who hadn't already been convinced that Chris is Wyatt's little brother. If the writers honestly thought this was a surprise, I say fire the lot. Even the spoiler-phobic had picked up on that. Subtlety of a giant anvil falling on someone's head. *shrug* Still, it gave Phoebe a purpose that's not completely herself, although there's plenty of snark before we get there.
I still can't stand the bright lipstick Rose chooses, or at least lets someone choose for her. It's distracting. But that aside, Paige's definitely sneaking up on Piper in the snarkiest witch we ever did see department. Almost every episode involves at least one zinger that makes me want to add it to a nonexistent wall of snark. This week's was the "Should I get you a room?" when Phoebe is groping herself. Woo!
Superficial snark notwithstanding, Paige also got a giant hint in terms of a career. Thing is, I could live the rest of my days without ever seeing the Magic School again. :p She also finally realized that maybe Richard's powers should be, I dunno, bound. [Yay for all of us who thought of that without the aid of spoilers. Rock we do.] Of course one could argue that it's not her place to bind Richard's powers without his permission. They're his powers. Now if he honestly wants help, then there's no moral dilemma. If not, then I can see the bitching already on its way.
Wow. They'll do anything to cover Holly up, including having her head chopped off for 95% of the episode. o_O Creative though. Piper's worrying about Wyatt not being normal enough to be normal was nice to see. It's funny that she never bothered to think that he might not fit in as normal, despite her best intentions. Thing is, has she thought of what he might want? I know he's not even a year [continuity, people! Jason's comment last episode didn't grate until now.] old, but he's not going to stay opinionless forever. Even Leo has opinions...
Speaking of Leo, I like him feisty and pissed the hell off. It gives him spunk, spark, and attitude to spare. Piss the guy off more often. And just once could he react that way when Piper's in danger? Just once? Come on.
Phoebe. Oh, Phoebe. Vision quest? Ironic? Someone who can actually tell irony in this age, is it ironic that the vision-girl needs a vision quest to finally see something? Anyway, condescending Phoebe kicks off the episode with her whole "my age" crack, when it's impossible for her to be more than three years older than Paige, and in fact, should be about a year, if that. She follows this up by having the worst hair she's had all season. All flat and fugly, and just plain wrong. So wrong that I thought Paige's hair looked quite nice. [to be absolutely fair, Piper's hair was blah when we could see it.] Then we move to reaffirm our knowledge that Phoebe's first [and only] priority, is herself with the whole "And me from helping ... me" line. Wouldn't want to break up the greatest love story ever, would we? That said, I wasn't really annoyed so much as slightly bothered when she was on screen and pulling typical Phoebe stunts. Well, until they used 90% of their episode budget to have phantom demons attacking her and then phasing through her. Dude, save the cash for something else later on. Sheesh.
But the most important part of the episode wasn't actually part of it. That opening backlot thing at the very beginning? Wow. Caps, anyone? Wow.
Overall, I wanted to like the episode more than I actually did. Woe. Not bad, but not perfect. Something was missing, and bragging rights to whomever figures out what was missing. Other than an acknowledgment that Prue was also there as a child. Sheesh!
Hands cold. Caught a bit of Evanescence on the pre-Grammy round up. Wheeee!
Okay, more stuff.
Finally brushed that huge snarl out of my hair, so now I have fluffy booful hair. Hair that I am going to dye when I have the money to buy the two boxes it'll require. Any suggestions? I'm thinking reddish again, but hey, if someone else has been dying [no. pun. intended.] to suggest something, go right ahead.
Hands still won't warm up. I'm off to oooh and ahhh over the Charmed backlot thing they did at the start of TLoSH. And read some more of Neverwhere.
